We have DSs friend with us for a sleepover. It's unplanned because of a sudden family bereavement

I knew he was gluten free which is fine.. but now I've discovered he's also vegan.

I was going to do gluten free fish fingers, potato wedges and beans but obviously no good and I'm tired at at a loss as to what to replace fish fingers with.

I'm sure it's obvious.. but.. help? Please..

Vegan sausages are quite nice. I'm having a Sainsbury's vegan burger for my tea tonight actually.

Devineursula · 18/01/2023 16:58

Odd you’ve not had him over for dinner before and yet called in such a crisis to have him?!

Is he celiac disease gluten free? If so you need to be careful about cross contamination with gluten from wooden kitchen utensils and wooden chopping boards. I think plastic and metal are ok but wood holds onto the gluten somehow.

Spaghetti and tomato sauce, with some garlic toast on the side? That would be my first thought

He's gluten free

whizzpopping · 18/01/2023 17:00

Oh wait I suppose there must be gluten in pasta and toast 🤦‍♀️

maddy68 · 18/01/2023 17:02

Gluten free pasta , throw some tinned veg in your cupboard in the tomato sauce.

No cheese

CathyBoardman · 18/01/2023 17:03

Chips!

A 10 year old lad’s parents allows him to become vegan when he’s already dietary restricted. Unbelievable

Laurdo · 18/01/2023 17:04

All the big supermarkets have separate free from sections, ambient, chilled and frozen and they're forever growing. Kirsty's pizza is gluten free and has some vegan ones. GF pasta and pasta sauce would be an easy one.

This isn't chicken and this isnt pork sausages are gluten free. Tesco, asda, morrisons and sainsbury's sell this range. Use the chicken for a curry or make bangers and mash with the sausages. Marigold gravy granules are gluten free and vegan. Bean chilli is another option.

All flora spreads apart from the flora buttery are vegan. You can get gluten free cereals in the free from sections and pick up some soya or almond milk.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/01/2023 17:06

I imagine he will be happy with just wedges and beans. That's exactly the same as a jacket potato and beans surely?

Oblomov22 · 18/01/2023 17:07

Vegan and gluten is tricky.

What is the problem? "Gluten free" is only a restricted diet insofar as you have to look for things without gluten. It's not like removing a food group.

OngoingCrisis · 18/01/2023 17:09

GF spaghetti with tomato sauce and garlic bread? Asda has garlic bread in their Free From section which is GF and V

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 18/01/2023 17:12

A quick google shows that Linda McCartney vegan 1/4 burger is gluten free. Could you do this with beans and those oven chips that are just potatoes, oil and salt?
The normal people can have the same but with a different burger.

Ok just totally ignore fact he’s gone…. Vegan

BadNomad · 18/01/2023 17:22

Like others have said, if he has coeliac disease, you will need to make sure his food doesn't come in contact with anything in your house that has been touched by products containing gluten. You will make him very ill. If you're going to use the toaster for him, you will need to buy toaster bags. Things like that.

Devineursula · 18/01/2023 17:22

Take away chains very gluten friendly

i would just treat him to his favourite take out

Tekkentime · 18/01/2023 17:26

Maybe he could have dinner at his house and come over afterwards?

I wouldn't risk a takeaway for someone with coeliac disease without really knowing what you are doing. Most takeaways are not GF, and even if you can find a GF pizza or fish and chips, they may not be aware of cross contamination issues eg using a separate fryer from normal battered products, or proper separation in the pizza oven etc.

Devineursula · 18/01/2023 17:32

I would with the big chains such as Wagamama

I am baffled why they chose someone who he’s never been over for dinner before to look after him following a family bereveament?

He's been here before plenty of times.. indeed you'll notice that I commented I still had gluten free pasta left over from last time.

The boys are close friends at school and often meet up at weekends and holidays.

I don't know why he's gone vegan it seems to be a new development although his dad is vegan so perhaps that's what's influenced it? However if he says he's vegan that's exactly how he's going to be dealt with.

So if he enjoyed the gluten free pasta last time… why not just rinse and repeat?

Devineursula · 18/01/2023 18:01

well yes, anything else would be tantamount to abusive!
