I need an owl.

Just a small, pint-sized owl.

It could perch on things, fly around the house, enjoy the garden on summer days.

I could stroke it when I’m stressed. And he could sleep on my headboard.

Is this unrealistic?

I don’t want a gigantic one with a massive wingspan. Just a small (smaller than a pigeon) sized owl.

Just wondering if my home and lifestyle are suitable for such a pet…

You’ve been reading too much Harry Potter. Owls aren’t pets. You could get one of these:

I love owls and always thought it would be lovely to have a pet one (if unrealistic). Then I went to an owl zoo (is that what they’re called?) and discovered they stink.

I was interested in the anima handler exhibition at the Harry Potter studio tour, where they said that owls are actually quite dim. There were several Hedwigs in each film, because each bird could only be taught to do one thing. Crows and other corvids are actually the brainy ones, and can do all sorts of tricks, including problem solving.

But what about the really long legs. It would freak you out whenever you saw them.

Antigonads · 09/01/2023 21:42

Don’t be so ridiculous.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 09/01/2023 21:47

I'm with you OP. I would love a pet owl.

CherrySocks · 09/01/2023 21:47

You could put an owl box in your garden?

trythisforsize · 09/01/2023 21:49

An owl is a wild animal and should be allowed to live a natural life. Pet ownership of wild animals needs to be banned. Pronto.

WednesdaysPlaits · 09/01/2023 21:50

I have owls nesting pretty much outside my bedroom window (well in the garden but it feels close). They’re bloody noisy.

ouch321 · 09/01/2023 21:50

I assume this is a joke thread but for those if you who like owls you might enjoy the YouTube channel Yoll the Eagle Owl.

She is a falconer who keeps lots of different owls in her large home and aviary.

Newnamefor2021 · 09/01/2023 21:50

Owls are not pets.

They cannot be tamed unless they are hand reared, they eat mice and chicks frequently (twice a day), their feathers shouldn't be handled much as they are coated in oils that we will destroy, they have strong breaks and claws, they smell, they need a lot of space and work.

They are not Hegwig. They are not pets.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 09/01/2023 21:52

You can have a fantasy owl best friend though.

transformandriseup · 09/01/2023 21:53

Imagine it pooing on your bed though 😱

HoneyDragon · 09/01/2023 21:55

Get a dragon. They are much better.

TheQuestToStopPigeonWoppie · 09/01/2023 21:58

Don't get a pigeon

HoneyDragon · 09/01/2023 21:59

You can’t get a pigeon, they come in bulk. I don’t think they do singles.

Circumferences · 09/01/2023 22:03

Move to a forest.

We have "pet" owls but they live out beyond our garden because we are in a forest.
We hear them at night it's so magical.

I wouldn't dream of bringing one indoors that would be bonkers.

Bagzzz · 09/01/2023 22:03

How about a Soft toy owl from the Barn Owl Trust so you are helping the wild owls?

Bimblybomeyelash · 09/01/2023 22:05

I’m a bit in love with this toy owl www.ollipops.com/tawny-owl-with-babies-comes-with-3-baby-tawnies.asp

PandaOrLion · 09/01/2023 22:06

It would be incredibly useful to find things you’ve lost as it can turn its head all ways. If you could either learn to speak owl or teach it English then it could tell you where everything was.

OP depending on where you live have you ever done an owl experience day? We have a sanctuary/ rehabilitation centre nearby and you can pay to learn how to keep them and fly them for half a day. Best experience ever even if you aren't allowed to stick one under your coat and bring it home.

I had no idea their legs were so long 😮

HoHoHowMuch · 09/01/2023 22:14

This man accidentally got very big owls. It is unusual. Man has owls move onto balcony
