I need an owl.

Just a small, pint-sized owl.

It could perch on things, fly around the house, enjoy the garden on summer days.

I could stroke it when I’m stressed. And he could sleep on my headboard.

Is this unrealistic?

I don’t want a gigantic one with a massive wingspan. Just a small (smaller than a pigeon) sized owl.

Just wondering if my home and lifestyle are suitable for such a pet…

I've always fancied a blue footed booby myself.

I need an owl.

@bravelittletiger it is! They are quite something. Videos of the noise they make on YouTube will haunt you forever.

What about the potoo bird?

It looks like a muppet and sings as though it’s haunted.

I could use it to scare burglars.

I always thought my avian knowledge was pretty good but I've not heard of the potoo bird. I'm off to read some more as that thing looks like a fantastic beast.

Vinotinto78 · 09/01/2023 23:04

@bravelittletiger You’re never fully dressed without an owl.

Minimalme · 09/01/2023 23:06

No you can't. If I can't have a baby panda then you can't have an owl.

Vinotinto78 · 09/01/2023 23:09

I do happen to know a bloke with an ‘arris ‘awk. But it’s just not the same 🙁

WarningToTheCurious · 09/01/2023 23:09

What happens when you’re stuck in a hole, in the fog, in the middle of the night … with an owl?

Imagine it pooing on your bed though 😱

They poo pellets of all the indigestible bits of mice including the bones and hair.

Just typing that reminds me of that horrible (made up?) thing - the hair/grot balls from Medieval women’s knickers - that gets mentioned every now and then on MN. I’ve dredged up ‘sootikin’ but my menopausal brain is shot, so I’m not sure. And I just mentioned it, so I’m part of the problem. 🤦‍♀️

I love these!! I like how they show each other there feet when they choose a partner. 'Check out my blue feet!'

Minimalme · 09/01/2023 23:15

It's only twins!!

If you help me partake in the unethical trade in baby pandas op, you can have an owl.

I have an owl in my garden. He’s a noisy bugger. You may have him if I can have an otter.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/01/2023 23:17

Also have plenty of rooms for anyone who wants one. I don’t know if they come in singles either. Or they certainly don’t at dusk.

Your intelligence is unsuitable for such a pet 😂 how can you decide you want something that you don't know the first thing about? Like the fact they're nocturnal, for instance 🤦

DelurkingAJ · 09/01/2023 23:18

I explained carefully to DH that I needed a sea otter family and he very rudely laughed at me and asked me which part of the ocean I fancied owning. Deep sympathy OP! 🤣

I assume this is a joke thread but for those if you who like owls you might enjoy the YouTube channel Yoll the Eagle Owl.

She is a falconer who keeps lots of different owls in her large home and aviary.

Five Owl Farm, also on you tube, deals with the 5 types of owl on the farm. There is the most beautiful footage of owls silently hunting by moonlight and feeding their young .roosting in the barn...and so on.

Kiwi birds are fluffy, rotund, and smell of mushroomy forest. I sniffed a kiwi once, it was good.

You should subscribe to Rosemary Mosco's Flight Club newsletter, last month's Weird Bird of The Month was the horned screamer. It has a horn and screams.

It looks devestated at the thought of having been spotted by you

Your DH is a fool. Everyone should have an otter family.

I want this one. I can pop him in my front coat pocket and take him for a walk.
We went the the Lake District a few years back and there was an owl charity near the boats there with all different owls on perches. Dd and I are big owl fans and nearly had a fainting fit to step off the boat and be unexpectedly presented with about 10 different owls of all shapes and sizes - we were in owl heaven. Dd held one about as big as the one pictured - I think it was called a Pygmy owl 🥰

Worse. Than. Toddlers. Fact. I read an article about pandas and how they reject something ridiculous like 40% of the bamboo presented to them. Twin pandas would be hell on Earth. All potential cuddle time would be wasted cutting bamboo for them to shun.

That's a very sweet faced owl!

Oh, and we always love to go and see these guys on our annual trip to paradise park in Cornwall - the tawny frogmouths. They never fail to make me smile.

I've been associating with a green owl for nearly 1600 days, he teaches me languages and drives me batty sometimes.

I need an owl.
2bazookas · 09/01/2023 23:42

When I was a child, our next door neighbours had a (rescued) wild barn owl that lived freerange on top of the wardrobe in their bedroom. At night they opened the window and let it fly off to hunt; then at their bed-time they would call it back in by hooting to the owl which would hoot back. Sometimes there was a lot of hooting and some ruder shouting until the owl agreed to come home ; my bedroom window was close to theirs so the racket often woke me up. I loved listening to the hooting (my parents not so much).
