I need an owl.

Just a small, pint-sized owl.

It could perch on things, fly around the house, enjoy the garden on summer days.

I could stroke it when I’m stressed. And he could sleep on my headboard.

Is this unrealistic?

I don’t want a gigantic one with a massive wingspan. Just a small (smaller than a pigeon) sized owl.

Just wondering if my home and lifestyle are suitable for such a pet…

They poo pellets of all the indigestible bits of mice including the bones and hair.

It's not poo. The pellets are regurgitated via the beak.

DS likes kakapos. They’re flightless so presumably good house bird.

And who doesn’t love this face?

Ostriches are flightless. I’m not sure that’s the best criteria for being a house bird or not. Ostriches would definitely be a problem indoors.

BruceAndNosh · 10/01/2023 01:02

What about a budgie with an insatiable appetite instead?
It would be well chonky

Luckingfovely · 10/01/2023 01:07

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon Kakapos are absolutely wonderful. They very nearly went extinct a few years back, but the species is looking much more hopeful now thanks to a huge conservation effort. I am very happy that these fat and silly green parrots will hopefully be around for longer.

If you want to know exactly how brilliant kakapos really are, you just need to watch this video of Stephen Fry watching a kakapo having sex with a hat. On a head.

DS has a build a bear owl. He was named ‘Owly’.

DS is an adult now and Owly lives in our loft.

Good name. All my owls are called Owly. 😬

There's an Owl Centre an hour's drive from me and it is a tremendous place. They do a talk and tell us that owls are pretty stupid. Their skulls are filled with their eyeballs not their brain.
I find them so pleasing to the eye. I'd love a house crow though.

That's where you are wrong. Owls are veeeery wise. They are famous for it 😬🦉

Montague22 · 10/01/2023 07:46

Oh I love secretary birds, strutting around with long eyelashes and stomping on snakes 😆

AngelDelightUK · 10/01/2023 08:02

Some of these birds are so ugly 🤣🤣🤣

I have budgies and they are amazing. Get a budgie, you don’t have to feed them mice

TerraNostra · 10/01/2023 08:05

I LOVE that Belgian clip of the man with owls in his window box.

I just have a fox in mine…

An owl is a wild animal and should be allowed to live a natural life. Pet ownership of wild animals needs to be banned. Pronto.

This. They're not pets.

Florissant · 10/01/2023 08:29

I get you, OP. Whatever you do, don't let anyone palm off an emu on you while telling you it's a good substitute for a cute owl.

EBearhug · 10/01/2023 13:04

Didn't Florence Nightingale have a pet owl?

You want a Little Owl, but for all the reasons listed above, not a real one.

Luckingfovely · 10/01/2023 19:26

OP you need to move to Edinburgh!!

I need an owl.

Have you been on the Sherry trifle this evening?

XenoBitch · 10/01/2023 23:44

Noooo!
Tik Tok and Instagram have a lot to answer for with the little "pet" owls living in people's houses. Even rehabilitated owls should live in an environment as close to the wild as possible. People having them in their house as pets are assholes.

OrangePomander · 11/01/2023 00:17

I’d love a couple of the smaller pterosaurs, but fear I’ve missed the boat on that one.

Gilead · 11/01/2023 00:29

We have a pair of Tawny Owls living in the woods at the back of our garden. They’ve had Owlets this year. We hear them all the time and if we turn all lights off and sit quietly they occasionally wander along the fence.

This man accidentally got very big owls. It is unusual. Man has owls move onto balcony

Shock 💜

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/01/2023 12:14

There was a guy on Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners who ran an owl sanctuary and had a box of baby owls on his dining room table.

He was edited as an oddball.

Personally I saw it as aspirational living.
