Does anyone else hate January?

The Christmas celebrations are over, Christmas lights and decorations are coming down, not as much money left due to Christmas spending, feeling fat and unhealthy due to all the food eaten over Christmas, cold and wet days, dark nights and mornings.

I don’t mind February as much, but I start to feel better in March when we hit spring and the nights start getting longer.

I don’t mind the dark nights as such, but I hate it getting dark as early as 4pm!

Time in January passes like time on a running machine Grin

This year though I have a dog, so it's day 2 and I've already covered 15k. It was a lovely day in the SE today. I feel rather virtuous.

I'm back to work tomorrow and expect at least this week to fly by.

On the other hand, DS has Mocks next week, which will be back to running machine time again.

Same January birthday. Feel for you! But am meeting a few friends this wend. But as you say everyone is broke now.

SaintKilda · 02/01/2023 18:22

Love January! My birthday next week. A time for renewal and hope.

Nuffaluff · 02/01/2023 18:37

I used to hate January and February. I would long for spring.
Now I’m older and I’ve realised I was wasting a sixth of my life wishing the winter away.
I like winter now. That special crisp bright quality that winter sunshine has. The sound of rain on the roof of the utility room. Snowdrops. The delicious comfort casseroles. The warmth of a cosy blanket when watching TV. The ‘fresh start’ feel of the new year and planning self improvement.
This year I’m going to leave some of the Christmas lights up for January.

I hate January but I try to be positive as best as I can. Its not easy! Confused

PinkPansy · 02/01/2023 19:11

I dislike January and agree that it seems to last much longer than the other months! It’s the combination of the dark nights and the cold, wet days which makes me feel a bit miserable

Hbh17 · 02/01/2023 19:18

January is way better than December and just a huge relief!
December is awful because:

  1. It's the darkest month of the year & includes the shortest day
  2. So many people go a bit nuts
  3. Christmas

In January, we start planning our holidays and other fun things for a new year. And it's definitely getting lighter - there was noticeably still some light in the sky at 4.15pm today.

catchingclouds · 02/01/2023 19:20

I don't like January at all. This first week is the worst. Some houses still have trees up and lights on but gradually they all start to come down and time trudges away from all the fun and festivity.
It feels like a long time until payday at the end of the month. Good luck and Godspeed to you all 🤣

Kinsters · 02/01/2023 19:22

DD is an early January baby which sucks for her! We are Chinese though and the lunar new year often falls in January so that helps brighten things up as once the Christmas decorations come down we put up lanterns and other CNY decorations, start buying special new year foods and planning family reunions etc.

I actually really like January ducks for cover

I love the cold, the darkness, the snow... yes I'm off.

Personally I absolutely hate august because I'm so phobic of wasps and I can't leave the house without being divebombed.

beachcomber70 · 02/01/2023 19:37

I quite like January. Christmas has gone, thank God, the nights start getting shorter, half the winter is over.
On dark, wet mornings I lie in reading with a cuppa. I cook nourishing, warming food and there are still some treats left from Christmas.
There are some bargains in the shops and I enjoy walks when it's crisp/frosty and the sun's out. The rest of the time I can enjoy the log burner fire, watch something good on TV/catch up and snuggle up in bed with a book at bedtime.
Spring is not far away and the whole year stretches ahead.

Oblomov22 · 02/01/2023 19:44

January is grim. My birthday is at the end. No one has any money, everyone's doing dry January. It pisses down with rain, dark and miserable.

GardenTool · 02/01/2023 19:50

I love it!

Thank god Christmas is over.

Days are getting longer. It will soon be spring!

Yes couldn't believe the difference just two weeks ago at twilight

frozendaisy · 02/01/2023 19:56

I don't mind January because I have learnt to prepare.

I do many boring, think admin, jobs in January so they are all out of the way for spring.

I don't know it just feels more cleansing than December. Like Christmas obligations over and can just be simple food, cosy leisure (no money reading books) new start. It's a 1/12th of each year. Better not to waste it than wallow.

Vintagevixen · 02/01/2023 19:57

My absolute favourite month, I'm really looking forward to it.

I find it peaceful, no big events to take up my time, love the weather, cosy dark evenings and the possibility of cold/snow (though am disappointed most years!) No early sunrises - hate it when mornings are light at 4 am.

Honestly I find it a very nurturing time as such, I often do a craft project in Jan. Can eat nice simple food - soups etc.

Also adore February! I'm very content right now.

OffToThatPlace · 02/01/2023 19:58

Going against the grain here but I love January.

Evenings slowly getting lighter, a hint of early spring in the air on sunny days, quiet shops, overall peacefulness after the madness and commercialism of Christmas. A whole year ahead.

Also, first world problems but easy to get a hair or beauty appointment, or reservation at a favourite restaurant!

Newnamefor2021 · 02/01/2023 20:01

My birthday is on the 5th and I hate it. There are a few other reasons why too. I lost a baby on my birthday but I spend the day in tears most years. I think once it's over I'm ok-ish with the month but it's a rubbish month. No one can be bothered, everyone is tired, broke, it's cold and dark, nothing to look forward to.

Delatron · 02/01/2023 20:10

I don’t really like it as it goes on forever and I hate the dark in the evenings and mornings.

However, like another poster I noticed it was still quite light at 4.15 today (and it was a beautiful sunset) so that cheered me up slightly.

On another thread someone said they’d taken their decorations down and filled the house with fresh flowers. I like that idea - especially tulips which make me think of Spring.

I’ll try and do loads of running as that perks me up.

But it really is my least favourite month - something to get through and endure.

Delatron · 02/01/2023 20:11

I also feel absolutely exhausted in Jan. Like my body just wants to sleep/hibernate which makes getting up a struggle. I need morning light!

Butteredtoast55 · 02/01/2023 20:12

I like January. It's calm and quiet, and the skies are sometimes so soft and clear. Today was a lovely day here and there was still a little light in the sky at 5 o'clock.
Now we're sitting, post-healthy broth and fresh bread supper, reading by a jolly fire whilst outside is starting to sparkle with frost. It's lovely.

Sleepyquest · 02/01/2023 20:14

Yes I hate it, nothing to look forward to, little money. February is when nice things start happening 😊 this time last year I was waiting for my baby to be born so I didn't feel too miffed Xmas was over but this year I do!

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2023 20:15

January is fine. There is enough optimism at a fresh new year and new possibilities to document in a bright and shiny diar to see me through a full four weeks, until February....which is clearly, the worst month in the year.
