Does anyone else hate January?

The Christmas celebrations are over, Christmas lights and decorations are coming down, not as much money left due to Christmas spending, feeling fat and unhealthy due to all the food eaten over Christmas, cold and wet days, dark nights and mornings.

I don’t mind February as much, but I start to feel better in March when we hit spring and the nights start getting longer.

I don’t mind the dark nights as such, but I hate it getting dark as early as 4pm!

I used to hate January. Cold, dark, depressing. Now I embrace it a bit more and make sure I focus on cosy and gentle pursuits. The last few years we have gone abroad in February and that really helps.

if money was no object I’d go and live in Australia in Jan/Feb every year.

January is the worst month of the year. Everyone's skint, no one wants to go out because they're skint, the weather is atrocious, trying to get back into the swing of work after a week or so off. It's just a horrendous month for most I think.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 02/01/2023 02:16

I absolutely hated it when I lived in the UK. Now I'm in Oz it's the best time of the year! My only complaint is my July birthday is now in the middle of bloody winter. My January-born husband is happy though.

Love January mainly it’s because it’s when we get to go on holiday. Currently sat waiting for a flight to Phuket from Bangkok.

due to our jobs January is the main month we holiday.

Back on the 20th.

Nice! Not jealous in the slightest 😩

littlelovely · 02/01/2023 04:54

@alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 I loved Australia in January. Fond memories of music festivals, beautiful beaches and just generally summer fun. I’m happy back in the UK but every January makes me wistful and consider moving back!!

I like it. You don't have to do anything in January, other than get through it. It's low key. I do my crafts, drink tea and eat biscuits. I start buying spring flowers to have around the house, and all my winter decorations (candle holders, fairy lights) stay out.
I've got a day out planned the last weekend in January that I'm really looking forward to. Find the joy in January, it's there!

This, for sure.

dolor · 02/01/2023 05:12

Pretty much everyone.

stbrandonsboat · 02/01/2023 05:56

My birthday is in January and I don't celebrate it because no one wants to do anything.

timetogetlost · 02/01/2023 06:53

January birthdays are unfair but I have found that as no one wants to celebrate and you get crap presents, it's an excuse to do nice things for yourself.
We book theatre/skating/bowling/cinema/night away. We don't bother with parties or meals out as no one will come but we enjoy each others' company. Lots of Jan bdays here!

BlueKaftan · 02/01/2023 07:07

My DH and I both have January birthdays close together. It’s been lovely to celebrate together after years of feeling blah about it. We now go away for a city break every year.

HowVeryBizarre · 02/01/2023 07:20

January is one of the best months of the year in Sydney (apart from the last couple of years when, as well as COVID, the weather has been shit!). Lots of people take extended holiday so there is a real party vibe and lots to do. We were in the city today, drinking rose, taking ferries around the place and generally having a blast. I hated January in England for all the reasons above.

hugoagogo · 02/01/2023 07:31

January is such a relief after all the fakeness and pressure of December. I love the long cold nights and the freedom to do whatever.

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 02/01/2023 07:42

Like hugoagogo I love January. I'm not a big fan of Christmas so it's good to have it over with. Lots of gardening to be done and plans made for the summer. Two family birthdays to enjoy, the nights are getting lighter.

A couple who live in our road, however, hate it and go somewhere hot immediately after Christmas and come back in early March every year.

HelenHywater · 02/01/2023 07:48

I quite like the feeling of it being a new start. You can set intentions for the year, plan what you want to do/where you want to go. It feels like there's a lot of opportunity and promise.

I dislike the dark nights, but I know that every day is getting lighter.

I've saddled 2 of my children with January birthdays!

DinosApple · 02/01/2023 08:07

I don't hate January. One of my Dd's has a January birthday so that is something to look forward to. I like sun and heat, but you know it's just a waiting game and it's coming. The solstice has passed and sunset will be getting later each day.

Yesterday morning I took a stroll in the garden nursing my hangover with a cup of tea- some of the snowdrops are out!

The bulbs I planted in the autumn are pushing through the soil. New life and hope!

Mommabear20 · 02/01/2023 08:08

Absolutely loathe January!!
There's literally nothing good about it. Weathers crap, play parks are muddy, and Christmas cheer is gone! Roll on March!

cptartapp · 02/01/2023 08:42

Daisypod · 02/01/2023 01:01

Yep January sucks, my birthday is next week and I'm already dreading it as I know no one likes January, no one wants to go out, no one has any money. January is bad but a birthday in January really is the pits.

Yes this. Mine is next week too. A complete non event.

Girlintheframe · 02/01/2023 08:53

January is my least favourite month for all the previously mentioned reasons but I try to look on the bright side.

I like how it's a new year..kind of like a blank page
I do lots of self care in January ..not much else going on, dark nights etc
I use the extra time to read etc
It's a good month to do things like organise your finances, make plans etc
I like how I have a renewed interest in healthy eating etc
I like being inside and cosy, with candles etc.

But yer it's a shit month

DipmeinChoc · 02/01/2023 08:55

Nope it's my birthday month. Cleaned house from the craziness of Xmas. Hope of a good year ahead.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 02/01/2023 09:06

There is nothing good about January. It has literally no redeeming features.

LlynTegid · 02/01/2023 09:21

Hate is not the word I would use, but I agree with you about early darkness, and would prefer lighter evenings with BST all year round even though it would only just be light now.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/01/2023 09:36

I always dread January, so dreary once all the lights and decs are gone.

OTOH by the end of Jan the days are noticeably getting longer, compared to just before Christmas. And around here anyway, the very first spring flowers are usually appearing.

Tumbleweed101 · 02/01/2023 09:42

I’ve started to enjoy January. A whole fresh year ahead. Quiet time of the year with no expectations. In the warmer months I have to be busy with something all the time, it feels. It’s getting lighter and soon it’ll be light when I get home from work again.

BrutusMcDogface · 02/01/2023 01:41

My poor daughter has her birthday in January. Sad to know that in years to come, nobody will want to celebrate with her.

Dramatic much?

BrutusMcDogface · 02/01/2023 09:44

Haha, read all the responses from adults with January birthdays! Luckily she’s towards the end of jan so can celebrate in feb.
