Does anyone else hate January?

The Christmas celebrations are over, Christmas lights and decorations are coming down, not as much money left due to Christmas spending, feeling fat and unhealthy due to all the food eaten over Christmas, cold and wet days, dark nights and mornings.

I don’t mind February as much, but I start to feel better in March when we hit spring and the nights start getting longer.

I don’t mind the dark nights as such, but I hate it getting dark as early as 4pm!

January is my least favourite month and seems to last forever.

That should read that in March the days start to get longer!

Well, the days are already getting longer as the shortest day is before Christmas!
It is a slow change but I noticeable. Throughout January how I start the month leaving work in the dark but towards the end I am nearly home before that happens.

I don't mind January.
Yes the house looks drab after the lights & decs have been taken down but it soon starts to be "normal".
I love walking in the countryside as although it is damp & muddy, the autumn leaves have finally blown away and the ground looks a bit more clear and we have clusters of Snowdrops to cheer you up. Also the birds are very dependent so there is always a lot of activity in the garden.

Yes hate grey January! So many expectations over New Year then it's the same drizzly days. For some reason without fail me and my dh would always be on the brink of divorce every January, I used to dread it, anyway we have now separated properly last year so I don't need to worry about us not getting on this month. Also with going on walks the kids come back covered in mud. Roll on Spring 🙂

My birthday is first week of Jan and I hate it. Friends are skint, not drinking or on diets. And all celebrations are done in a fortnight.

Wanted to go to my favourite restaurant but it's shut until mid-month.

Also, not really wanting to be another year older.

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/01/2023 11:03

Loathe November, January and February. The only thing that improves Jan and Feb, is bunches of daffodils in the shops.

TheDuchessOfMN · 02/01/2023 11:10

I’ve already noticed the evenings getting lighter. Isn’t it 2 minutes each evening?

Snowdrops will be here soon.

I like a cold, crisp January day.

Yes but I always think it’s March before you notice it properly, when the clocks go forward

The Scots know how to deal with January. I grew up in rural Scotland. The farming year is quiet in midwinter and so after Hogmanay the new Year celebrations would continue for several days. There were traditional sports on New Year's Day like the Ba in Orkney. All the neighbours visited each other over the first few days of New Year and so the feasting and celebrations continued (no-one took decorations down on Boxing Day because why would you take down decorations before the biggest party of the year?). Then at the end of January there is Burns Night, which was always a ceilidh and of course Shetland has Up Helly Aa.

Watch out for the signs of the turning of the year, the days are getting longer again, there will be snowdrop up soon, enjoy the quieter month after the hard work and excess of December.

Today is our first day without visitors staying for over a month, we're having a lunch of leftovers from New Year, the sun is shining and I'm happy.

January is the worst month. I was supposed to be born in January but thankfully the fates intervened, because it is depressing for all the reasons you mention.
I feel much happier when February comes and bulbs start emerging.

Having a January birthday I grew up with ....nothing nice ever happens in January, can't give you much/party after Christmas, hate January, couldn't buy you anything nothing left in the sales and no new stock in.....worst time to have a birthday after the week of Christmas

GoingOnce · 02/01/2023 12:01

Not at all. It’s a new year, we’re moving towards Spring, the weather isn’t always bad. It’s sunny and 9 degrees here - that’s fine for me. I don’t give too much thought to the month. I do get fed up in April if it’s cold and rainy and I just want to hurry up and get to summer. I like Christmas but equally I’m happy to clear up and out the decorations away, have a bit of a sort out and a fresh start.

I do feel sorry for January birthdays with everyone saying isn’t January awful!

Lost123454 · 02/01/2023 12:04

I love January as Christmas is over

OatFox · 02/01/2023 12:05

January is a bit crap here. We're just trying to make the most of it. At least it's a 'clean slate, fresh start' 😂

My mum’s birthday is in January. I buy her a tray of primulas every January for her to pot. There’s always lovely little reduced sets left in boots that she likes. It’s easy to get a restaurant because everywhere is quieter.
Maybe it would be harder if you were the type of person who wanted a huge party.
As for children’s parties, I think most parents would love a January invitation!

stargirl1701 · 02/01/2023 12:27

No. There is joy in every season including Winter.

I'm still enjoying Christmas which is not over. Twelfth Night and Epiphany celebrations still to occur.

I have ski-ing and ice skating booked. There might be snow with us for sledging.

I have started Burns' Night planning and DC will get their poems to learn once the schools go back on the 9th.

DDog will need plenty of frosty and/or snowy walks.

Lots of stews and roasts to eat. Edinburgh Christmas Gin and sherry to drink by the fire.

Board games and jigsaw puzzle fun again by the fire.

pinneddownbytabbies · 02/01/2023 12:29

I like January. The days begin to lengthen and spring is just around the corner.

CeriB82 · 02/01/2023 12:33

Instead of moaning, get up and do something! You don’t sound motivated at all. Walk, clean, get moving! You’ll soon feel better

WhatNoRaisins · 02/01/2023 14:43

I'm starting to wish I lived in Scotland reading some of these threads. Maybe it's because it's darker in the winter there but they seem to do a much better job of January.

@jannier ·

Same here - January Birthday. In fact Today!

Nothing great. People forget/do not want to go out.

Only disappointment so far - No hot water for 3rd day in flat. No mash with my pie lunchtime Boo Hoo! But the gravy was lovely! Mushroom and Ale pie.

Plus, I have moaned on here before about having a birthday in the new year. I decided from 1st January to eat better etc etc. Nothing to do with little willpower (cough cough!) and all to do with my Birthday being on 2nd January!!

TheGirlWhoTamedTheDragon · 02/01/2023 15:26

It is a really low time of year for me. Darkness, awful weather, back to work and still so much winter stretching out ahead. At least it was sunny today and some shoots from spring bulbs appearing in the garden but January and February and even March are much too long!!

DillDanding · 02/01/2023 15:31

I like it. It’s sunny and cold today. The spring bulbs in the patio pots have started to grow. I enjoy the re-set in terms of healthy eating and no boozing.

But I hate that the gym car park will be full and I won’t be able to get booked into my classes.

The kids would love the invite the problem is paying for the party.

Cuppasoupmonster · 02/01/2023 15:55

I like Christmas; I also like January! I have a bit of a power surge, I get the decorations down, clean the house, go on a bit of a health kick and start on the things I want to achieve this year. It’s not eventful as such like December but there’s a fresh optimism to it.

DinkBoo · 02/01/2023 15:57

It's my birthday this week too! And yep, everyone forgets, is tired, skint, ill, back to work, on a diet, partied out, hates January, etc etc etc. I can't remember the last time I did anything for it, at all. Not even a meal out with DH, or a nice meal in.

I don't mind January apart from that. The days are a bit lighter, spring is round the corner (and summer is still far away).

QueefQueen80s · 02/01/2023 16:04

I used to hate it but see it as a fresh beginning now.
