Disgusting taste In my mouth for over a week

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 17:15

Can anyone please help, or share experiences.

I have had a disgusting, bitter taste in my mouth since Christmas Day.

I am quite certain it's not dental related. My teeth are in good condition and I look after my oral health.

Everything tastes different. Water tastes disgusting. Coffee tastes off too.

I have done a covid test and it's negative.

Had anyone had this before? Did it just go away on its own. Could it be something sinister?

I'm 33 and not menopausal FWIW

Pregnant?

Tamarindtree · 01/01/2023 17:16

I take extra iron. Low iron gives me a metallic taste in my mouth.

Tamarindtree · 01/01/2023 17:16

Tonsil stones can give a horrible odour and taste.

  1. Pregnant. I had a metallic taste
  1. Sinusitis, quite common after a cold
disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 17:19

Not pregnant.

No cold or any cold symptoms.

I'm sure it's not tonsil stones as it doesn't feel like it's coming from something in my mouth, if that makes sense.

You haven't ate anything with pine nuts in have you as they can leave a bad taste for a week or two with some people

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 01/01/2023 17:24

Pine nuts was going to be my question, too.

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 17:24

I did find this theory when I googled. It really surprised me! But I am pretty sure I haven't eaten anything with pine nuts

Covid

GettingStuffed · 01/01/2023 17:27

I have this, but it's related to a chest infection. Have you had Covid at all as these smell and taste things can occur up to 3 months later

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 17:30

I haven't been unwell at all. I had tonsillitis in October. Since then nothing

It's really stressing me out, I wonder if it will just resolve itself.

Mine is definitely from low iron levels.

HippyChickMama · 01/01/2023 17:44

Reflux can cause this, have you tried some Gaviscon or Peptac? Worth a try, I occasionally have this and it gets rid of it

Highlyflavouredgravy · 01/01/2023 17:45

Pregnant! Do a test!

Cheshiremamalife · 01/01/2023 17:47

Are you absolutely sure you couldn't be pregnant??

toomuchlaundry · 01/01/2023 17:47

Low B12. Can be hormonal too

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 17:49

I'm quite certain I am not pregnant, my period has just finished. And haven't had sex for a few months.

I had blood tests not long ago and all vitamins were normal.
I'm recently started taking vitamin d though 🤔 could that be a cause?

I had a period of a few months when a lot of things tasted like they had that bitter stuff that you paint on your nails added to it. One of my friends suggested taking a multi vitamin and mineral supplement, and it went away after a while. I asked on Mumsnet too and everyone said I was pregnant, but I wasn't.

Purpleavocado · 01/01/2023 17:49

My late DM had a bad taste for ages, in fact she stopped eating and became quite ill - finally her GP realised she had oral thrush and it cleared up really quickly with medication. Are you prone to thrush at all?

MWNA · 01/01/2023 17:50

Have you eaten pine nuts or pesto recently?

starfish4 · 01/01/2023 17:50

I'd be thinking:

Pregnant

Covid - it can take a few days to test positive

Dental - even if you clean teeth regularly, do you floss/clean tongue. Worth doing for a few days to see if helps

Diet change over xmas - something like pickles/pickled onion might leave a different taste in your mouth.

CheeseMaiden · 01/01/2023 17:51

Do you have any other symptoms? If you have any redness in your mouth or a white coating on your tongue, it could be oral thrush.

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 18:10

I haven't had pine nuts, I'm pretty certain.

Might try some Gaviscon tomorrow and see what happens

Have you tried a tongue scrape and a chlorohexdine mouth wash to check it's not coming from a bacteria in your mouth? (Don't use it long term just for a few days)
