Disgusting taste In my mouth for over a week

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 17:15

Can anyone please help, or share experiences.

I have had a disgusting, bitter taste in my mouth since Christmas Day.

I am quite certain it's not dental related. My teeth are in good condition and I look after my oral health.

Everything tastes different. Water tastes disgusting. Coffee tastes off too.

I have done a covid test and it's negative.

Had anyone had this before? Did it just go away on its own. Could it be something sinister?

I'm 33 and not menopausal FWIW

@catfunk I haven't tried that in particular, but I thoroughly brush my tongue always.
I even bought a really strong mouthwash to see if it helped. But the taste came back straight away.

Pretty sure my breath is fine as I am quite aware of bad breath, and have asked family members to confirm and they have all said my breath is fine

Have you got something stuck up your nose? A friend had half a peanut up hers and had no idea how it got there, but it affected her taste and smell

Justwingingit2005 · 01/01/2023 18:32

Acid reflux. Ive had a bit of it over Chrisrmas and had an odd taste.

When did you do your covid test? If a few days ago I'd re test.

HandScreen · 01/01/2023 18:37

Sounds like pine mouth (from pine nuts) - I bet they were in something you ate, like pesto.

123woop · 01/01/2023 18:47

I had this as a kid and it was mouth thrush. It was horrendous and I had to have special medicine (possibly antibiotics) to clear it - happened after I was ill and rundown, so would make sense to have it over Xmas when you're more tired etc than usual

Applecottagetree · 01/01/2023 18:55

I take Zopiclone (sleeping tablets) and this is a side effect. Are you on any meds?

Happiestwithtea · 01/01/2023 19:02

Could be oral thrush, even without the tell tale white coating if you don’t have that. I would be inclined to buy some Daktarin gel from the pharmacy and give that a go and see if it clears, won’t do any harm if it isn’t. I suffer with oral and oesophageal thrush a lot due to autoimmune issues and am under a specialist for it. I never have the white coating, just get a sour awful taste when I have it. I use Daktarin gel every night, corsodyl in the morning (although this will stain your teeth if you use it for too long) and a Fluconazole 150mg capsule once a month. But that’s just because my issues are severe. Daktarin gel is definitely worth a try though.

Clutching at straws here but are you using any new creams/ products on your face? I had a moisturiser once that, I obviously wasn't using in my actual mouth, but always left me with a bad taste somehow

FashionDoggy · 01/01/2023 19:17

Do you have something stuck in between your teeth? Try an interdental brush, bet it's a tiny bit of meat stuck in there

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 19:27

The thought of something caught In my teeth for over a week makes me want to throw up.

I have flossed twice a day, also used a water flosser which is excellent.

I want to say it's coming from my tongue. My tongue looks normal, but will speak to a pharmacist about possible thrush.
Also will buy another covid test tomorrow
Thanks all!

Same op. It’s a back of my mouth quite distinctive taste.

I’m not pregnant.
don’t have any tonsils.
teeth checked before Christmas.

did think about covid but feel ok apart from generally tired.

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 19:35

@Notanotherusername4321 oh I feel relieved I'm not alone!

How long has it been for you?

OP posts:
Notanotherusername4321 · 01/01/2023 19:42

3 or 4 days?

I thought initially there was something wrong with my leftover Christmas pud, but it had been fine the day before.

it’s weird. It’s not an infection because I had a tooth abscess last year and could recognise the taste before any symptoms.

could be a mild virus I suppose.

garlictwist · 01/01/2023 19:44

I had this years ago in my early twenties. My only symptoms were this foul taste in my mouth and crushing fatigue. Plus my boyfriend at the time said I had really bad breath. Never found out what it was but it lasted about a week.

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 19:45

@Notanotherusername4321 yes I was hoping from this post a few people would say the same and then I would put it down to a virus going round

If you find a reason, please let me know! Hope it goes for you soon

I find that strong mouthwashes ruin my taste for a few days, especially corsodyl

Thingiemajig · 01/01/2023 19:49

Double check which bloods were tested as it won’t be a complete range of on the nhs

passiveaggressivenonsense · 01/01/2023 20:22

It sounds like parosnia which is triggered by Covid, my DC had it for 9 months. There's a FB page with other sufferers and useful info

Parosmia is a distorted sense of smell?

not taste.

chopc · 01/01/2023 20:37

If this is ongoing you need to get it checked. Start with a dental check and if nothing abnormal is found go to your GP. Change in taste or smell can be a symptom of covid or other infections but it can also be due to one of the nerves being affected

bellac11 · 01/01/2023 20:43

It will be from the tonsilitis. Any virus can leave longer term symptoms which crop up when you're not expecting it, in the past Ive had vertigo, sinus and breathing problems, lack of smell and taste. Not always just after the virus has gone but sometimes a few months on, then it takes a few months for it to pass again

very annoying

passiveaggressivenonsense · 01/01/2023 20:43

"Parosmia is a distorted sense of smell?

not taste."

Covid related parosnia starts with loss of smell and typically after 3 months when smell comes back things start tasting bizarre and disgusting. There are large numbers of people suffering from this typically having real difficulty finding foods they can eat to eat for up to two years. Google Covid related parosmia.

I googled covid related parosmia as suggested.

BMJ:

What you need to know
Parosmia is a common sequelae of smell loss associated with covid-19, with onset on average three months after initial infection
Refer patients with parosmia without a clear preceding cause such as covid-19 and those with red flag symptoms
The presence of parosmia is positively associated with better outcomes from olfactory training in patients with loss of sense of smell—they are more likely to regain their sense of smell than those without parosmia

i haven’t had a loss of smell at all. Or covid, too my knowledge.

passiveaggressivenonsense · 01/01/2023 21:02

I really hope it's not Covid related because it's truly horrible, my DC had a really limited diet for months. COVID-19-Parosmia/ Anosmia is a thing and It distorts taste as well as smell.
