Disgusting taste In my mouth for over a week

disgustingtaste · 01/01/2023 17:15

Can anyone please help, or share experiences.

I have had a disgusting, bitter taste in my mouth since Christmas Day.

I am quite certain it's not dental related. My teeth are in good condition and I look after my oral health.

Everything tastes different. Water tastes disgusting. Coffee tastes off too.

I have done a covid test and it's negative.

Had anyone had this before? Did it just go away on its own. Could it be something sinister?

I'm 33 and not menopausal FWIW

I've noticed in the last few years that my tastebuds go haywire in the week before my period.

My husband had this about 4 wks ago, he had been ill with a virus which cleared but remained with a bad taste in his mouth. After a week of mouth washes etc a trip to the GP and a course of antibiotics cleared it!

Have you had covid before? Last year I had it in October, and then suddenly in November found everything smelled vile. It lasted about 12 weeks and ruined Christmas entirely. Toothpaste, most savoury things but particularly cured meats, cheese, and crisps, and some fruits all smelled rotten and musty. It eventually faded over time.

whatisheupto · 01/01/2023 21:38

I'd stop taking the vitamin tablets and see if that helps. I've found the taste from them can stay with you all day.

Allgirlmom · 12/02/2023 01:04

Did it go away?
could you possibly have had Covid and your were asymptomatic?
i had Covid 2 months ago. I didn’t start getting a bitter taste in my mouth until 5 weeks after. But I still have it 3.5 weeks later. It’s very annoying. My dad also had Covid a couple weeks after me and he has the bitter taste in his mouth too. It’s very annoying as it’s almost always there. Feels like hand sanitizer or something in my mouth. I hope yours went away

PickledWilly · 12/02/2023 08:10

I have a bitter taste! Have had it since November. It can be bitter, sour, chemical tasting. My tongue feels 'numb' - like the feeling when you burn it eating hot food except it's like that every day. Even water tastes weird.
Dentist and hygienist have confirmed no issues with my mouth

LutherRalph1 · 12/02/2023 15:24

A couple of days after I
Posted on here I developed a horrible taste and turned out I had oral thrush from
Antibiotics!

TiaI · 12/02/2023 15:53

Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis? You can get this with plaque free clean teeth and is more to do with gums over reacting to minuscule irritations due to low vitamin levels (b12). Personally I’d get blood done and check B12 and iron. Antibiotics. Do not take b12 tablets before blood tests as they can give misleading results and if low in b12 you’ll likely need injections for proper absorption

Allgirlmom · 12/02/2023 20:23

Did you possibly have Covid before it started? Could even be weeks before the bitter taste started @PickledWilly

disgustingtaste · 25/02/2023 19:37

I still have the taste!! The hand sanitizer thing describes it Really well.

ive had blood tests and found out the I have haemochromatosis. But I don’t know that that is the reason for the taste or not

it’s really stressing me out now.

I still have mine too. Is yours constant 24/7 or does it fluctuate? Mine is mostly constant but sometimes it’s mild. Every day is different. Today has been terrible so far. So bitter and strong Yesterday was more mild to moderate

Ive actually had 3-4 days in the last 6 weeks where it has been super mild and I thought it was getting better but then it comes right back.

Davros · 25/02/2023 19:58

I had an awful taste from Fluoxetine

disgustingtaste · 25/02/2023 20:04

@Allgirlmom same as you. I have a few mild days and think it’s going. And then next day it’s back. Water tastes really chemically when it’s bad.
when it’s bad it’s like something is released in my mouth. It’s so strong and even if I lick my lips it tastes like it. but Im very sure it’s not something that is making my breath smell or effecting my breath.

my doctor said it could be iron. As this condition I have makes me absorb too much iron into my blood. Have you ever had iron blood tests? (although I don’t feel it’s that)

I also keep having a weird burning (bit like heart burn) in the back of my throat sometimes. Feels breathing related. (Not sure if it’s connected)

have you been to the doctor at all?

Try some probiotics. I kept having a horrible taste and my tummy wasn’t great (but I wasn’t ill IYSWIM) and they helped with both.

Kfjsjdbd · 25/02/2023 20:17

My dad had this an it was a stomach ulcer bleeding. But you would have passed out by now I think if it was that!

disgustingtaste · 25/02/2023 20:26

Oh really!
I did have a month of omeprazole but it done nothing.
I have just done a H Pylori test as well. Waiting for the results.
doctor said she thinks it’s anxiety. I don’t agree but who knows!

I really think mine is from Covid. It’s something that can happen. Like the metallic taste some get. My sister has this too. The bitter taste. She got it from Covid 2 yrs ago. Hers has mostly gone but oddly she gets it even now occasionally but not too bad she says. I would be curious to have my iron checked. But honestly I think it’s long covid. I also get fry mouth sometimes. And a burning raw tongue feeling that comes and goes. Now my throat has been doing a weird thing very recently where I get a lump in it. And my glands or something in my neck feel tense and kind of hurt. That come and goes now too. I hate it all.

Allgirlmom · 25/02/2023 20:32

*dry mouth.

my dad as well gets what he calls a sour taste in his mouth but his is improving and he said it doesn’t happen much anymore. Mine
hasnt improved. Ugh
my dad had Covid about 10 after I did

LadyLolaRuben · 25/02/2023 20:38

I had a problem like this and it was a toothpaste I'd changed to causing the issue. Took a few weeks to wear off

Beaucielblues · 25/02/2023 20:41

I had this throughout October. I brushed my tongue continuously. Nothing worked at all. I think I had a mild virus at the same time. Take heart, it finally disappeared and has not returned. It did drive me crazy at the time.

PickledWilly · 26/02/2023 20:31

Mine still continuing! Agree that some days it's milder. Does anyone else's tongue feel numb at the front? I also can't taste much. Been the same since October. Currently also under nephrology as have a decreased kidney function however the nephrologist was unsure if the two things are related

disgustingtaste · 27/02/2023 12:52

My tongue has felt weird and almost a bit burnt and sore. But that is going now.

still have the taste coming and going but I’m almost getting used to it 🤔

OP posts:
Davros · 27/02/2023 21:01

Actually the problem I had was from Clarithromycin

Allgirlmom · 28/02/2023 01:01

Yesterday mine wasn’t so bad. Today is worse. I always get my hopes up on the better days that I’m getting better.

my tongue feels off too. And it’s definitely not an actual bitter taste coming from my throat or anything. It’s like the bitter receptors in my tongue are going haywire and producing this bitter taste. But I doubt there is actually anything actually bitter in my mouth at all.
yesterday I could ignore the bitter taste for the most part. Because it wasn’t too intense. Today it’s been harder to not think about because it’s more intense. 2 days ago was even more intense and I literally felt like I couldn’t handle it and i cried a couple times that day out of frustration and feeling like I’m stuck like this now.
