Cost of London Fireworks

Fabulous as they are to watch, I wonder how much those fireworks cost? People are struggling to heat their homes or buy enough food. It doesn’t really sit well with me this year.

OP posts:
XenoBitch · 01/01/2023 00:16

There will be a specific budget it for this. No one is being starved so fireworks can happen.

ofwarren · 01/01/2023 00:16

Just wait till the coronation. That's going to cost a pretty penny 😬

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/01/2023 00:17

There shouldn't be a budget for it. It is no doubt a colossal amount of money which would be better spent anywhere else.

MeinKraft · 01/01/2023 00:17

Who is paying Sam Ryder for his hour of miming insipid old cover songs?

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 01/01/2023 00:17

Most of them you see on the TV are cgi

Whatnextarghhhhhh · 01/01/2023 00:18

I think it’s great to see New Year celebrations after the covid restrictions of recent years.

Bugbuggerit · 01/01/2023 00:19

I absolutely loved them …the cost is not going to make any difference to our lives !

ModeWeasel · 01/01/2023 00:19

Bit crap to be making a comment about climate issues by burning up hundreds of thousands of pounds of fireworks.

Sausagis · 01/01/2023 00:19

£1.5m last year

YouTarzan · 01/01/2023 00:19

I don’t begrudge the money at all!

BethDuttonsTwin · 01/01/2023 00:20

I don't care. They were beautiful and felt hopeful. Had enough of sour faced sanctimony.

Menomenon · 01/01/2023 00:20

Oh my you killjoy.

The fireworks were awesome. Big showcase for the UK. Lovely party for London. Money well spent.

XenoBitch · 01/01/2023 00:20

Had a Google.
The London fireworks are paid for by the Greater London Authority Arts and Culture Fund.

The display also draws in a lot of tourists which will be contributing to the local economy via hotels stays, eating out, pubs etc.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2023 00:20

This again

BluebirdRobin · 01/01/2023 00:20

Probably doesn't cover the costs of fireworks but how much do they make in extra tourism ie: hotels/restaurants/general spending in the capital over New year? If the fireworks weren't on I doubt people would bother going to London to visit at New years.

Iamclearlyamug · 01/01/2023 00:21

They were amazing!!

Whatnextarghhhhhh · 01/01/2023 00:21

Sausagis · 01/01/2023 00:19

£1.5m last year

That’s really not much, probably the tax bill of half a dozen households in some areas of London.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 01/01/2023 00:21

They were fantastic. It brings people to the capital. Money well spent!

LoobyDop · 01/01/2023 00:22

Miserable buggers. They were great, and I loved the tribute to the Queen and the way her coin morphed into Charles’.

I thought that but was really wonderful

shggg245 · 01/01/2023 00:23

Ha I have this conversation / thought every year but always come round to the fact that they signify hope, so maybe are worth it for that. Must cost millions but reckon I'd miss them. Any way peace and happy new year to all. 😊

I thought the same. I also thought interesting use of the song “we found love in a hopeless place” although they just kept playing the “we found love” part.

I do love seeing Big Ben bong though, that’s enough for me.

Spectre8 · 01/01/2023 00:24

I can think of a ton of other things to get annoyed over in regards with how our money is spent.

A once a yr fireworks display is not one of them, thank god they are back.

watchfulwishes · 01/01/2023 00:25

We can't do nothing because of the cost of living issue, if you cancel everything that generates tourism/spending the situation worsens.

The issues around families not having enough money is separate.

I dislike fireworks due to the environmental impact, personally, I hope we can find an alternative soon.
