Cost of London Fireworks

Fabulous as they are to watch, I wonder how much those fireworks cost? People are struggling to heat their homes or buy enough food. It doesn’t really sit well with me this year.

OP posts:
AppleDumplingWithCustard · 01/01/2023 00:50

I like to watch the fireworks but could do without the political messages throughout. Just some decent music would be nice instead of the cacophony of sound they churn out.

Purplepurse · 01/01/2023 00:53

They charged between £300 and £ 80 for tickets.

DuplicateUserName · 01/01/2023 00:56

They were beautiful.

OP, where do you want it to stop?

No flowerbeds in towns? No money spent on parks and leisure? No Christmas lights? No council run museums? No free festivals? No free community gatherings at all?

There will always be something deemed unnecessary by some people, but if you stuck to that train of thought, we'd never have anything nice, ever.

Bobodd · 01/01/2023 01:00

lets all just roll over and die.

MoscowMules · 01/01/2023 01:01

London makes its money back on this every year.

All you need is 2500 people to spend on average £600 each in London on a mix of hotels, food, drink and you've reached £1.5million

SoupDragon · 01/01/2023 01:01

Every single year someone whinges about this.

Who is paying Sam Ryder for his hour of miming insipid old cover songs?

That would be TV license payers plus any stations they syndicate it to.

In fairness, with the proviso that all music since 1995 is shit, there is worse shit than Sam Ryder.

The display was spectacular as it should be. Those images would have been broadcast around the world great advertising for London.

Or would the OP have preferred the PM wave a single sparkler on the steps of number 10 at midnight 🙄

This suddenly brought back the memory of posting this in 2020... 😂

That conjures up such a funny image. Grin

@SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows You have a very inappropriate username. You sound dead miserable. It's New year FFS. Also, Sam Ryder and his show was fucking awesome. Really made me feel positive and cheerful, He's a right ray of sunshine. Smile AND he can sing!

Phrenologistsfinger · 01/01/2023 01:08

The sooner fireworks are banned, the better! Drone shows are better, kinder on the environment, on wildlife and on vulnerable people.

Can you wait until I’m dead before you ban them, please?

snappynewyear23 · 01/01/2023 01:10

I thought the same thing. I think <10 mins of fireworks at my wedding was over £1,200 so can imagine the cost of those beauties!!

Loved the tribute to the late Queen.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 01/01/2023 01:13

Unless you're a London council tax payer, don't worry about the cost.

Just thank those that live within a London Borough.

And if you, like me, pay for the fireworks that the whole of the UK benefits from, yeah, pretty pricey.

Limpshade · 01/01/2023 01:21

Please check out Auckland's piss poor effort, OP.

I love NZ, have lived here for years, but at the other end of the fireworks budget is our woeful display. The London show really wowed, I honestly think it's the best in the world and something to be proud of.

I hope you're not going to spend the rest of the year this miserable Grin

AmazonPrim · 01/01/2023 01:25

They were spectacular! I loved every bit of them and they made me smile. I've had a really rubbish tearful Christmas and they gave me hope for a better year.

I'm so sick of all the miserable people whinging about the cost, the noise, etc.

Bit crap to be making a comment about climate issues by burning up hundreds of thousands of pounds of fireworks.

Yeah....... I did wonder about the climate change message while all that debris will be landing in the Thames and surrounding areas - although hopefully there's a plan in place to clear it all up tomorrow for minimum impact, I think the drones are amazing and although the fireworks are traditional and people do love them, I'd be just as happy with the lights/drones shows, the pandemic one was very emotional and this one, with the tribute to the Queen was too.
I do think that overall, the people who come to London for NYE and the money they spend means the fireworks pay for themselves, if not boost the London economy too.

pinneddownbytabbies · 01/01/2023 01:28

If you want to see what a real waste of money looks like, then just head down to Bicester Shopping Village any day of the week.

I agree I liked Sam Ryder's show. Me and 8 year old DS bopped around the living room swigging babysham (me) and sparkling elderflower cordial (him) out of shiny silver flutes.

Keeping it "classy" 🤣🍾

Byfleet · 01/01/2023 01:33

I loved it and thought it was worth every penny (Londoner).

Ditto. Happy to have paid my taxes for that. And Sam was so smiley, how can you be cross at him?

lets all just roll over and die.

I find many MNers fail to find joy in literally anything miserable sods.

And Sam Ryder was amazing, much better than dragging back some ancient who no one under 70 has heard of that's lost their singing voice!

Furries · 01/01/2023 01:41

Every year, without fail, there is one of these joy-sucking threads.

Bog off and Happy New Year.

The people watching in certain areas have paid £15 each so that will offset a but if the cost. I personally love it

My friend looked into going. It was £100 each!!
