A thread for those on their own

Hi Everyone 👋

I thought it'd be nice to have a thread for company for those, like me, on their own over Christmas.

A place with no patronising comments telling us to go for a nice bath or volunteer at a local soup kitchen, no-one saying they'd love some peace over Christmas (not quite the same when you're alone all year round).

Apologies if there are loads of these threads already, I've used Sarah Millicans twitter hashtag before and thought it was great to chat with some like minded people.

For me, I've had a nice December, enjoyed the Christmas markets, ice skating and a few meals out. No stress for tomorrow, no running around buying hundreds of pounds of food nobody Eil eat. I'm also lucky enough to have had a few invites tomorrow which does reduce the loneliness (I'm not going but it makes me feel a lot better knowing I've been thought of).

So hello to anyone on their own, whether you're struggling or quite happy it'd be lovely to hear from you xxx

(P.s as ppl seem to take offence to everything, I'm aware there will be those not alone but having a shit time. Not saying us loners have it worst)

ugh I'm sorry your plans have changed. Do your kids know it's upset you?

No, I want them to live their lives and have fun they are early 20s and should be out there having the best time. I honestly am not mad that they are choosing to be with their friends, of course that's more fun than hanging out with mum. But I miss them and I'm sad.

I woke up to the sound of excited little feet running around in the flat upstairs clearly hyped on on selection boxes for breakfast, god I miss that.
Sitting here on my own watching stupid xmas movies, looking at the pile of untouched presents under the tree and feeling very unfestive today.

I've spent many Christmases alone and enjoyed them.

Tonight I'm sobbing my heart out.

I lost my job two weeks ago, and it all feels hopeless.

I'm doing my best...got a tree, had a nice supper, have turkey and all the trimmings for tomorrow. A friend said to drive to hers if it all got too much.

I've often been alone at Christmas but never lonely.

Hopefully this thread will lift me up...you all seem to be being stronger and more positive than me

@Pineappleskies

Hope you're feeling better today and best wishes for your job search. FlowersFlowers

Good morning and Merry Christmas! Xmas Smile

I haven’t been reflecting but reading through posts it’s now got me thinking Xmas Shock My mum was very keen on decorations so our house was always decked to the max. We’d come down to lots of presents on Christmas morning but I would feel really awkward because the rest of the year was so difficult, and I didn’t understand why we were all supposed to be happy for one day of the year. In the afternoon my grandad would sometimes join us but it would often end up in a blazing row due to my dad’s temper and I remember him driving off a couple of times.

As a teen Christmas was awful because I was in care. The less said about that the better!

As an adult I’ve had some nice christmases with boyfriends but also some dreadful ones. Memorably one boyfriend sulked all day in the bedroom of a holiday cottage we rented. The night before he got annoyed that I knew how to start a fire and he didn’t, and once it was going he was angry that I was looking at the fire while we were talking when I should have been looking at him. We played a game of monopoly and he threw the board at me because I was winning, stormed upstairs and refused to speak to me until late the following evening after I’d cooked Christmas dinner on my own.

I’m very happy to be on my own this year and free from those situations, no longer stuck in abusive relationships and treading on eggshells all day.

I’ve had a relaxed morning playing with my cat and am thinking about what to have for dinner later. The plan was a pizza but after a big garlic bread last night I don’t really fancy it anymore. I’ve got gravlax, challah and various cheeses and nuts so I might have a grazy day and possibly make a Thai curry. Will probably go for a walk shortly and having a Skype call with my friend this afternoon.

@CyanCrystalViolet - oh, how adorable - can totally imagine how gorgeous their fur feels. Am loving the expression in the second photo 🤣

Purplepuddle · 25/12/2022 14:18

My cat is enjoying Turkey and Christmas dreamies! Also had a mental play with Christmas paper which she's never done before

Furries · 25/12/2022 14:21

My cat LOVES Dreamies. But he turns his nose up any human food - chicken, ham, tuna, smoked salmon etc. He sniffs it, looks at me in disgust and storms off.

Yes to the Christmas paper - would much rather play with that than an actual cat toy.

Newestname002 · 25/12/2022 14:35

@Whatwouldscullydo

To top things off dd1 who has decided to alternate weeks staying with me and her dad just showed up with an entire bag of fucking washing that neither her or her dad saw fit to do. If I needed any indication of how little anyone thinks of me I just got it.

I hope you showed her how the washing machine works so she can do her own laundry... (Bah Humbug!) 🌹

My cat is the same! The only thing he doesn’t turn his nose up at is egg yolk. Even posh cat food is hit and miss.

Appalonia · 25/12/2022 14:48

Aw I miss my cat! I never felt alone when he was around. Sadly he died 2 weeks into the first lockdown. I've been watching Xmas videos on TV and now 80s music, feels v nostalgic. Chicken in the oven now, roast pots, stuffing and sprouts prepped and am on the white wine. 😁

it's a relief not to have Xmas adverts on TV anymore!

hope everyone is doing ok. X

@bloodywhitecat My DS has the same disabilities and he is 24, now. I feel lonely is that the same

Sending you love and empathy, feeling lonely is just as hard I think. I hope you managed to have a peaceful Christmas Xmas Smile

bloodywhitecat · 25/12/2022 17:10

Well, his Christmas present went down as well as the tree has. I bought him a light panel and he loves it!

I am no longer dreading the "How was your Christmas?" question because we have had a lovely day. I did our dinner and pureed his as he is tube fed but he is fed 'proper' food rather than prescription milks and he seemed to enjoy that too.
