I'm shocked, what a loss to music. 😔

Awful news. Far too young. Anyone remember the Colourfield? Going to listen to them tomorrow in tribute.

Loved that first Colourfield album - listened to it over and over. What sad news Sad

DisforDarkChocolate · 20/12/2022 07:24

So very sad, the sound of my teenage years and the first gig I went to.

startingline · 20/12/2022 07:40

Really sad. Blank expression was my favourite song when I was younger

skippy67 · 20/12/2022 07:45

I'm so so sad to hear this. I grew up with the Specials, and the Fun Boy Three. I finally got to see the Specials in 2012, and again in 2019. They were absolutely fantastic. I've always adored Terry Hall. Absolute genius

WeAreTheHeroes · 20/12/2022 07:47

Really sad - such a talent.

skippy67 · 20/12/2022 07:48

" I don't normally get why people get so upset about the death of someone they've never met. I do now. Growing up in the 80s the Specials were the soundtrack to my youth."
This is exactly how I feel today.

AlisonDonut · 20/12/2022 07:48

What a terrible sad loss to humankind.

RIP Terry.

JorisBonson · 20/12/2022 08:42

It's a Fun Boy Three morning in our house today 💔

NashvilleQueen · 20/12/2022 09:05

Born in the 70s I knew him first in Fun Boy Three but a bit later discovered The Specials. I have loved him (and had a huge crush on him) since about 1985.

Nothing beats a good dance to a Two Tone tune and The Specials in particular captured an important youth moment in multi-cultural Thatcher's Britain.

They were brilliant. He was brilliant. And it's a gut punch that he's gone.

IvySquirrel · 20/12/2022 09:14

So so sad to hear this. I'm a Cov kid and the Specials made us so proud back in the 70s and 80s. Fab songwriter and singer, gone too soon.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 20/12/2022 09:27

@SierraSapphire

I saw that exhibition last year when I was visiting, my cousin who is a bit older than me is in one of the photos.

BestIsWest · 20/12/2022 09:37

I’m unexpectedly saddened by this. I remember hearing A Message To You Rudy for the first time in a record shop in 1979 and then going to see them in 1980, all of us dressed in black and white. A big part of my teenage years.

I love Tracy Thorns tribute on Twitter
"Here is the street, and here is the door/ Same as it was before/ And up the stairs, and on the wall/ Was Doisneau's Kiss and Terry Hall..."
💔

He was a very beautiful young man and I did indeed have his poster on my wall.

I’ve passed on my love of them and my vinyl copy of The Specials to DS and he became a big fan too.

lynthesearesexpeople · 20/12/2022 09:49

I was so sad when I saw that this morning. Such a talented man. I hope his passing was peaceful.

Hbh17 · 20/12/2022 10:39

So sad. Another bit of my youth gone.
"Ghost Town" is an absolute classic.

SinnerBoy · 20/12/2022 10:53

I loved the Specials, I think I was 9 when Gangsters was released and my mam said, "Oh, it's that Prince Buster one!" Thanks for spoiling it... Ghost Town, Concrete Jungle and the like described life perfectly, growing up in the decaying Northeast of England.

the80sweregreat · 20/12/2022 11:53

Ghost town was such a brilliant record.
He was a talented soul

Occasionally the death of a celebrity hits me hard. The biggest, with tears and a ridiculous loss of appetite for three or four days was David Bowie whose death in 2016 seemed to become a portent of everything falling apart, Brexit, the orange wotsit. This has hit me nearly as hard. Such a beautiful man, such a wonderful singer and songwriter. The Specials were the epitome of Two Tone and to continue his success with The Fun Boy Three, Colourfield and as a solo artist, I'm not sure his quiet genius was fully appreciated in his lifetime. A very sad day indeed. RIP beautiful man.

Totally agree.

I cannot understand people who mock those who get upset at the death of someone they never met, they don't seem to understand how it can be so representative of your own life and all the memories associated with that person and music, film, art as you've aged along with them.

hattie43 · 20/12/2022 12:01

My first crush . RIP

tothesea · 20/12/2022 12:01

This is such sad news. DS2 is named after A Message to You so it’s a very special song to us. I’m so glad I got to see The Specials live, they bounced on to the stage to Gangsters, it was amazing. Christ they really don’t make ‘em like they used to. RIP Terry.

Puppylucky · 20/12/2022 12:08

Saw the 2-tone tour in 1980 with The Specials Madness and Selector which was amazing but the The Specials first come back gig in 2008 in Brixton was something else. Thanks for the good times Terry

EachandEveryone · 20/12/2022 12:12

Going to see The Specials was always an absolute riot even when the punters were middle aged and beyond😃 the energy in the room was incredible. I last saw them in Nottingham afew years ago. I think thats probably the last proper gig Ive been too. None of this seated stadium nonsense for them.

AclowncalledAlice · 20/12/2022 12:34

Today has not been a good day for music. First Terry Hall and now Martin Duffy (Primal Scream...he was just 55 years old). I feel so sad at the loss of 2 great musicians who had a massive impact on my life. May they both RIP.

the80sweregreat · 20/12/2022 13:28

It's not so much the passing of a celebrity or singer that makes you sad, as much as the memories really! Your first 7 inch single that you bought, the first time you heard their songs or that appearance on top of the pops
Nothing brings back more memories more than a song or a photograph

hellswelshy · 20/12/2022 13:36

Sad news. Loved The Specials & Terry seemed to be loved and respected hugely by those who knew him. Going to play some of the best of his tunes this afternoon
