I want to see the actual cctv of the Berlin hotel aquarium popping. 1 million litres + fish destroyed

For those who haven't heard, a Berlin hotel cylindrical aquarium containing 1 million litres of water & tropical fish exploded, dumping everything through the ground floor of the hotel & out into the street. I also want to know how this happened? Was it a design flaw? There must've been damage somewhere for it to suddenly break. There must be cctv too surely? I can't imagine 900 fish flapping about on the floor.. Anyone else curious about this?

It would look amazing…but I’m so sad for all those poor fish so I don’t think I’d like to see it.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 16/12/2022 13:37

I was literally just looking for footage but there’s nothing yet. Maybe they’ll release it over the next few days. Poor fish. Could have been a disaster if lots of people were around though.

BabbleBee · 16/12/2022 13:37

My worst nightmare - that’s my real life phobia! <shudder>

Saltywalruss · 16/12/2022 13:38

I wouldn't want to see dying fish.

LynneBenfield · 16/12/2022 13:38
Sad

A spectacle for sure but very sad indeed.

Anewhoo · 16/12/2022 13:38

Why do you want to see the death of hundreds of fish?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/12/2022 13:40

I just heard about that on the radio. Some people were injured by glass, it was lucky that nobody was killed.

I've been to lots of aquariums where the visitors are below water level of absolutely huge tanks and it had never once occurred to me that they might fail. I had always assumed that they were over-engineered to withstand multiple the levels of stress that they actually do.

I want to see what happened to the tank, how/why it broke. The fish dying is terrible but that's not my focus.

Wasn't that on a film once?

Spliffle · 16/12/2022 13:41

Wow, I hadn't heard yet that anyone was injured by the glass. That's very serious because the glass must be super thick.. It should also be laminated presumably.

It was one of the Mission Impossibles.

Shesasuperfreak · 16/12/2022 13:42

Didn't people die though?
I dont want to see a snuff film

SaveMeCheezus · 16/12/2022 13:44

I stayed there about 10 years and the aquarium is (or was) quite a spectacle; we specifically booked a room that looked inwards at it rather than outward over the city. Hoping that the two people who were injured aren't too badly hurt, and very sad about all the fish 😕I'd likewise like to know; if not necessarily see, what happened.

CovertImage · 16/12/2022 13:44

It's the piscine equivalent of of accident rubber-necking I guess

No, no dead people.

It happens in Sing. Loads of luminescent jellyfish in the tanks.

No people died, but the fish did I assume:

spiderlight · 16/12/2022 14:35

Those poor, poor fish :( 1,500 and the Guardian says they've all died.

TinFoilHatty · 16/12/2022 14:38

No one should be keeping fish in captivity anyway, I hope this awful event is the aquarium version of Blackfish.

RoseAndGeranium · 16/12/2022 14:39

Don’t know why you’d want to watch that but ok. They think the cause was the cold weather. Fell to -10 overnight and this could have caused a crack in the glass, weakening the tank so it later exploded under pressure from the water. Really sad. Poor fish.

RunLolaRun102 · 16/12/2022 14:43

It‘s probably because the glass either wasn’t tested to sub -10 temps or one of the pipes froze. Either way doesn’t look good for ‘german design’

FTY765 · 16/12/2022 14:51

No, I wouldn't want to see it. Those poor fish.

SaturnaliaCalling · 16/12/2022 14:54

Why on earth would anyone want to see footage of people being injured by exploding glass and 1,500 fish dying?

The mind boggles.

kittykarate · 16/12/2022 14:59

It seems a bit mad that it got cold enough to damage the glass - most of the tank is actually in a hotel lobby, not exposed to the elements. Unless something radical changed as part of the refurb they did a couple of years ago.

kittykarate · 16/12/2022 15:04

If you look at this photo I took in 2010, you can see it was fully inside the atrium of the hotel. Very easy to see how people were injured, as the base of the tank is directly above the bar.
