I want to see the actual cctv of the Berlin hotel aquarium popping. 1 million litres + fish destroyed

For those who haven't heard, a Berlin hotel cylindrical aquarium containing 1 million litres of water & tropical fish exploded, dumping everything through the ground floor of the hotel & out into the street. I also want to know how this happened? Was it a design flaw? There must've been damage somewhere for it to suddenly break. There must be cctv too surely? I can't imagine 900 fish flapping about on the floor.. Anyone else curious about this?

The first thing I thought on reading about this was that there should be laws against using live animals as a design feature! Nothing is foolproof and the poor fish are the ones to have suffered.

TheCraicDealer · 16/12/2022 16:01

I would like to see it- not necessarily the actual footage but a render of how it shattered would be interesting to see. Was the fracture at the bottom/middle, did the glass explode all at or did one side go first, did it go top-bottom, how exactly did the water escape and from what part of the tank, how did the sheer volume of water in the tank spread through the atrium of the hotel, etc.

If people had been killed or seriously injured I wouldn’t be fussed but here they were very lucky. I have had to watch CCTV of people being killed in fatal accidents in a work capacity before and it’s not something I would actively seek out or watch voluntarily.

Why do you want to see the death of hundreds of fish?

Thousands of fish.

GerardWay123 · 16/12/2022 16:07

I've stayed in that hotel. The divers go in the tank every day to clean the algae off the glass. Thank God they were not inside it when it 'exploded'.

SinnerBoy · 16/12/2022 16:07

1,500 isn't thousands. More than a thousand, but not a multiple of it!

musingsinmidlife · 16/12/2022 16:07

It happened very early in the morning so the bar was empty and the lobby was very quiet.

Yorkshiredolls · 16/12/2022 16:08

Some hilariously snipey replies on here today what on earths up with people 😄
OP, I agree, whilst I feel so so sad about the fish I also think that the aquarium looked amazing and am shocked that that could happen. Id be very interested in seeing footage to see exactly how it happened, the way the glass came away, what the wave looked like. Of course we don’t expect to be given first dibs on that over the incident investigators but its not an unreasonable thing to remark!

Fuckitydoodah · 16/12/2022 16:08

I've just seen this news story. My first reaction was sadness. Sadness at the 1,500 fish put in the tank for human enjoyment that are now all dead. Many freezing to death as they were washed outside on the pavement.

Nothing is infallible.

Damnautocorrect · 16/12/2022 16:12

I’m so sad for the fish. What a way to go.

I'm inclined to agree with you on that one.

milveycrohn · 16/12/2022 16:37

I read somewhere that it was thought the cold weather had caused the glass to crack, and then the pressure of the water had caused it all to 'explode'.
Obviously not exactly stress tested, but maybe it's an exceptonal cold winter in Berlin, or the hotel were struggling with normal levels of air temperature?

YouSoundLovely · 16/12/2022 16:42

It's cold, but by no means exceptionally cold for Berlin (only around -9 or -10 early this morning, I think). I can hardly think that's it.

Our oven door spontaneously shattered once. I was in the room but not near it, fortunately, and it wasn't on. I suppose there are no complete guarantees that something like this won't happen.

I'd be interested to see the analysis when it's done, but it's not really reasonable to expect there to be anything beyond broad speculation at the moment.

Mind you, DH and I are watching Epic Engineering failures on Wondrium at the moment (excellent lecturer, if you're at all interested in engineering/structures, and Wondrium has loads of other good stuff on it. )

MaggieFS · 16/12/2022 17:09

The temperature things is pure speculation at the mo. Not to say it's wrong, but certainly not confirmed.

SummerHouse · 16/12/2022 17:13

It is fascinating from a scientific perspective. Sad way to go for the fish but no different from being caught in the ocean I imagine. I think the fish would probably not exist if they weren't bred for one tank or another.

BBC report said that as an attraction it was closed on Friday and people with tickets being offered to rebook. So I wonder if some work was done on it that's compromised the structure.

NellyTimes · 16/12/2022 17:15

Love all the people on this thread pretending they give a fuck about fish.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/12/2022 17:20

I would love to see it too @Spliffle.Xmas Grin

It's not about wanting to watch Fish Snuff.Xmas Hmm It's about seeing what it looks like when a fuckload of water forces through a container into a building. Its OK to be curious about this stuff.

After learning more about fish I’ve stopped keeping them as pets, despite keeping them all my life. ive never eaten fish either and find it incredibly sad when the fishing programs are on and you see great nets of them in their last moments.

but I’m pleased you’ve made a judgment on who can feel empathy for a living creature.

It was one of the Mission Impossibles.

It was the first one. Tom Cruise exploded it with gadget chewing gum.

Anewhoo · 16/12/2022 15:51

Unless you’re a structural glass specialist, I highly doubt you’re going to be able to ascertain the reasons for the failure of the glass. Sounds like you just want to see the video, which is fine, but you don’t need to dress it up like you’re doing some forensic analysis.

I completely agree with all if this, I'd be interested to see it as well, some of these replies are insane!

Could have been a really angry fish
