I want to see the actual cctv of the Berlin hotel aquarium popping. 1 million litres + fish destroyed

For those who haven't heard, a Berlin hotel cylindrical aquarium containing 1 million litres of water & tropical fish exploded, dumping everything through the ground floor of the hotel & out into the street. I also want to know how this happened? Was it a design flaw? There must've been damage somewhere for it to suddenly break. There must be cctv too surely? I can't imagine 900 fish flapping about on the floor.. Anyone else curious about this?

I've been to that aquarium. There's a lift/viewing pod that goes up the middle. It's beautiful and huge.
Anyone know if people were in the lift at the time? I found it quite claustrophobic. I can't imagine how terrifying it would be if it exploded

AFAIK the lift is only used by the Sealife centre which opens at 9 or 10am, so thankfully nobody would have been in the lift. A few hours later though and it could have been catastrophic.

Meanwhile a pop-up sushi bar opened up round the corner.

Sick but very funny!!

@panko There was no way of saving the 1500 fish from the big tank. The other smaller Sea Life tanks in the basement had the electricity cut off which was a problem due to oxygenation, filters etc so they were working on moving at least some of those to zoos. One report I read mentioned prioritising the endangered species so it sounded like they wouldn't necessarily be able to move/rescue all the rest, either.

If you look at this photo I took in 2010, you can see it was fully inside the atrium of the hotel. Very easy to see how people were injured, as the base of the tank is directly above the bar.

Wow, bloody wow!

TheChosenTwo · 16/12/2022 19:56

Wow, I’ve been up in the lift inside this aquarium, it was a bit underwhelming yes but at the same time pretty much exactly what I was expecting really. A slow ride up to the top.
Shame about the marine life, that’s very sad.
I’m curious about what the explosion looked like too OP, was it a crack with a trickle and then a massive gush? I don’t think it’s that odd to be intrigued about such a large tank of water just spontaneously exploding and I daresay if it were on YouTube (maybe it is, I haven’t looked!) there wouldn’t only be one lone view on there, there would be thousands. So you’re definitely not alone.

Our fish tank exploded once, 'luckily' there'd been a power cut in my office so came home to carry on working and discovered the dining room flooded, with our fish in a few inches of water in the bottom of the tank so managed to save them! Thank god for that power cut as normally we wouldn't have been back for a few hours! We think there was a hairline crack in the glass and January temps caused it to give way.

People are strange. Who wants to see actual footage of something catastrophic happening?

Because it's human nature to be inquisitive. And it was an extraordinary occurrence in an unusual place. It is sad about the fish but fortunately, as no people died, I just don't see why the holier than thous are out on this one.

Oh so sad poor fishys

I wonder if people in this floating swimming pool are having second thoughts now

They only managed to save 30 fish☹️

They said they want to see the fish destroyed

Ok, apologies for a poorly worded title.

It happened in the early hours of the morning so not really many people around. Unlikely anyone was in the lift or viewing pod.

I think it was 'fortunate' that it happened when it did. During the day or evening would have no doubt led to many more casualties.

RampantIvy · 16/12/2022 23:04

I have walked through the tunnel at The Deep in Hull many times, and now I feel nervous about going back.

SeveruslyFrazzled · 17/12/2022 00:56

Nooo. I didn’t even know it existed. It looked lovely :(

Boothss · 17/12/2022 07:45

I feel so sorry for the tragic loss of marine life and so in awe of the spectacular demise of the impressive structure.
In the words of Douglas Adams, So Long and Thanks for all the Fish.

I would imagine all owners of enormous fish tanks all over the world are now holding urgent reviews and inspections to check that they are not going to fail in the same way.

RampantIvy · 17/12/2022 10:41

I hope they do @KnickerlessParsons.

As a fan of The Deep, I have just looked at their website. Interestingly, Mumsnet gets a mention as per the below:

Mumsnet voted us number one UK aquarium in their Best Awards 2011

I'm sure they will once the cause(s) of failure has been determined.

😂😂😂 gotta look on the bright side!

NeedToKnow101 · 17/12/2022 11:00

It was so lucky that it didn't happened when people were up and about. Could have been a lot of human deaths.

ProtectorExtraordinaryOfTheCantonsOfNim · 17/12/2022 11:19

There's some interesting discussion (with graphs and stuff) here.

SockGoddess · 17/12/2022 11:41

protector thanks v much for linking that, those are exactly the kinds of questions I had and I had wondered if it was actually a high-tech plastic not glass.
