I want to see the actual cctv of the Berlin hotel aquarium popping. 1 million litres + fish destroyed

For those who haven't heard, a Berlin hotel cylindrical aquarium containing 1 million litres of water & tropical fish exploded, dumping everything through the ground floor of the hotel & out into the street. I also want to know how this happened? Was it a design flaw? There must've been damage somewhere for it to suddenly break. There must be cctv too surely? I can't imagine 900 fish flapping about on the floor.. Anyone else curious about this?

My totally unscientific speculation is a flaw in the glass that, over time, weakened.

Diffuserqueen · 16/12/2022 17:31

Dunno why some folks are being all weird and obtuse, you clearly don’t want to see fish die. But more you want to see it break and rhe water flood out. I think that’s natural

from what I understand they don’t know yet but think the extreme cold may have in some way crack the glass. It’s so lucky no one was seriously injured or killed as that thing is mammoth,

It sounds very holier-than-thou to do the whole “I can’t POSSiBLY imagine why you would want to see it”.

people would want to see it as it sounds like the sort of spectacular explosion you would normally only see at the cinema, and big unusual events are interesting. Given rubber-necking is a very common phenomenon it seems utterly normal that people would be interested.

I doubt the dead fish will really care one way or the other if you are above watching such things.

Absolutely. I don't mind saying I'd like to see it.
But the typical Mumsnet response has to be, 'Oh no, why would I want to watch fish die? ' I bet if there was a live stream of it, all these holier than thou types would be the first to watch it.
It's a shame about the fish, but they are, you know, fish. Not babies.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 17:35

Tbf the title does say she'd like to see the 1 million litres plus the fish destroyed.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 17:37

Still, on the bright side, assuming they all had appropriate protective footwear, the search and rescue dogs may have had a more enjoyable than usual day's work.

(Sorry... was that too soon?)

I‘m a longtime Berliner, have bern listening to the local German news on this rather than the Daily Mail interpretation of it. LOL (not really because none of this is funny) at the idea that the cold was the sole factor here. Firstly, -10 is not exceptionally cold for Berlin, so the design would have absolutely been expected to cope with the cold - we have had as low as -18 or so in the past. Secondly, the aquarium wasn’t exposed to air that cold - it’s in a covered lobby.
The main cause being touted all day by officials here (fire brigade and mayor‘s office) is probably material fatigue: something gave way, perhaps the glass, perhaps one of the connecting parts. I suppose it’s not out of the question that the cold exacerbated the issue, but it looks like the structural failure would have happened at some point anyway. Which raises the question: it was completely renovated in 2020, so material fatigue should not have occurred this quickly.
A side note is that the aquarium wasn’t owned or maintained by Sea Life - they just rented it for the elevator trips (I found the elevator slightly underwhelming). The owner of the entire building (the hotel too) is an investment company called Union Investment. Apparently engineers are currently checking whether the force of water has structurally damaged the whole building.
It‘s an awful thing, but would have been so much worse jzst an hour later.

greenacrylicpaint · 16/12/2022 17:44

part of me wants to se it too. if it is similar to the szene in mission impossible.

but I can be sad about the injured people and dead fish too.

it was very lucky that it happened when it happened. one hour later and the first people would have been taking breakfast next to it.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 17:47

By 'renovate', do you mean it was completely rebuilt with new parts?

oakleaffy · 16/12/2022 17:55

I knew a chap who worked installing the then new aquariums at Bristol Zoo.
He said the glass kept breaking on those, but clearly before any fish had been put in there.
Water pressure is huge. Big aquariums scare me a bit for this very reason.
Poor fish.

I doubt if a fish would care two hoots about your babies, either!

justgettingthroughtheday · 16/12/2022 18:01

General speculation seems to be suggesting the glass could have failed due to low temperatures. It was apparently -6 there last night. It's possible they let the lobby get too cold and the difference in temperatures either side of the glass caused it to fail?

Georgyporky · 16/12/2022 18:15

Has the hotel restaurant changed the menu? Shame to waste all that food.

SecondRow · 16/12/2022 18:34

I read this morning that Reynolds Polymer (tagline Building the Impossible) also built/supplied the "glass" for that scary sky pool in London. Yikes.

Christ that’s terrifying. As said as this was, at least it was fish and no humans in it, but the thought of humans swimming in that pool and the same happens is terrifying, as much as you won’t be swimming in it in extreme cold, whose to say extreme heat wont cause the same issue.

GoodVibesHere · 16/12/2022 15:26

I'm the complete opposite to this, I've often thought imagine if an aquarium breaks and the sharks get out or people drown (in a walk-through aquarium).

But I always think worst case scenario wherever I go, e.g. what if this bridge fails, what if this lift plunges to the ground etc. It's exhausting but I can't hell think things through to horrible end Sad

If it makes you feel better, a shark that got out of water can't do much!
I hate walk through aquariums though.

CoffeeBoy · 16/12/2022 18:45

I’d also like to see a video. I’m interested if it was like an explosion and a tsuanmi type wall of water, or a smaller hole which just all poured out quickly..

Really interesting to hear what is being said in Berlin itself - thank you.

Theheartsinvisiblefuries · 16/12/2022 18:47

I've been to that aquarium. There's a lift/viewing pod that goes up the middle. It's beautiful and huge.
Anyone know if people were in the lift at the time? I found it quite claustrophobic. I can't imagine how terrifying it would be if it exploded

cakeorwine · 16/12/2022 18:52

There must be so much pressure in aquariums and a lot of force. I can only imagine what it must have looked like.

Lucky there were only a few injuries to humans. Sad for the fish.

SecondRow · 16/12/2022 18:52

The renovation started in 2020 and only finished and reopened this last summer. It involved replacement of silicon sealant, not the acrylic panels themselves. So certainly big questions there as to how material fatigue was not tested for at that point.

As others have said, the temperatures lately are nothing exceptional for Berlin. I suppose it's far-fetched to wonder if the hotel turned down the thermostat in the lobby since the gas crisis?!

It looks like the inner cylinder stayed intact while the outer one blew outwards. But yes, an hour later and the human casualties could have been much worse.

ouch321 · 16/12/2022 18:58

I kept a tropical tank and was always v upset when any of my fish died

Glass can randomly explode. Happened to me not long back. In Lidl looking at frozen pizza, on the other side of the aisle my back was facing the cages of milk and Lidl has these doors you have to open to get the milk. Some staff member was using the floor swiffer nearby and I guess he just nudged - not hit- one of the doors and it exploded into hundreds of pieces. Luckily neither him nor I got injured.

panko · 16/12/2022 19:04

I hope they can save the fish

People are strange. Who wants to see actual footage of something catastrophic happening?
