Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

Oh go away - whenever something tragic happens and people understandably post about it, there is always someone ready to swoop in to call every 'ghoulish' and 'grief vultures' to make themselves feel superior.

Those poor boys - was imagining teenagers for some reason, these kids were so young.

LondonJax · 12/12/2022 11:44

@Mammillaria & @Velvetween the 'accident hump' is definitely a thing. All we can do is try to drum into our kids all the things that could happen.

But, I remember going out for a walk with my SiL and her, grown up, kids a few years ago.

The walk took us to a huge lake by the side of a hill.

Our oldest nephew said 'I remember diving into that lake in the summer from the side of the hill'.

I remember his mum just stopping and saying 'When did you do that? Don't you remember me and your dad telling you kids never to go into that lake as it has weeds in it that have pulled adults under?'

'Yeah, but it was fine mum. I knew how to avoid the weeds'.

'Avoid the weeds? What are you? Bloody Aquaman! ' (I always remember that one).

He's now 40 years old and his mum only found out about his summer of daring when he was 12 at that point...

All you can do is try.

My heart goes out to the families involved. Those poor kids.

Boysnme · 12/12/2022 11:45

So devastating, those poor poor children.

I had a conversation with my 11 year old who was adamant that he would not play on frozen water and knew why but I don’t know what he’d do if his friends were in trouble and if that would in the spur of the moment make him go on and help them.

Thoughts go out to their families.

We did crazy things, but we didn't do dangerous things.

My dads house was opposite forest with a lake in it. We also lived near reservoirs that apparently once someone swimming got sucked into the tube, and next to the river lea. We lived near water and were taught, drummed in, water safety 🤷‍♀️

I did hundreds of dangerous things as a child! scary just to think about them now!

Those poor families, I cant even begin to imagine what they are feeling right now - how infinitely horrible

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 12/12/2022 11:47

How utterly tragic. So sad :(
Thinking of the family /families.
But i too think this could possibly be 1 household. 6, 8, 10 and 11 years old would be a fairly unusual friendship group age range :(

loislovesstewie · 12/12/2022 11:51

Just heartbreaking. We used to live near a gravel pit that had been turned into a nature reserve. The water even in summer was really cold. I always told my DH who used to walk our dog there, that if the dog or any person got into trouble in the water he was not to go in to help. I understand that it's a natural reaction but people don't realize that the cold just stops the body functioning very quickly. Those poor kids.

slideintomxas · 12/12/2022 11:53

RIP those poor precious little boys.
There but for the grace of God go any one of us, tragedy can happen in seconds - especially where water is concerned - and I for one have an 8 year old boy that is impulsive and doesn't appreciate risk or danger despite being told. This hits home hard.
Praying for their families and the little boy that is still fighting. Utterly tragic.

BedTaker · 12/12/2022 11:54

I bet that those on social media blaming the parents etc are the exact same fucking people who post those stupid memes on FB about how kids today are so pampered and how back in the day everyone would be out playing for 23 hours a day and their parents had no idea where they were etc.

Eastereggs1 · 12/12/2022 11:57

From what I have seen it seems that the 3 that have passed were from the 4 pulled from the water and taken to hospital. So it’s likely 5 have died in total.

So so sad.

electricmoccasins · 12/12/2022 11:57

The Sun have a little more info (I shan’t link, but easy enough to find, and obviously, it’s The Sun…)

Witnesses say two boys were on the ice. Passers-by were shouting it wasn’t safe. The ice gave way and one boy’s foot became stuck. Those boys on the bank went in to help and they all got into trouble. Adult passers-by also went in. Emergency services were there very quickly.

I wonder if the younger ones were on the ice and the older boys tried to rescue them. My God, what heroes either way, and they have paid with their lives.

1Sky · 12/12/2022 11:59

how utterly dreadful, I was so hoping against hope that they were going to survive

RJnomore1 · 12/12/2022 11:59

Oh no. Oh those poor boys and their poor families.

User57713 · 12/12/2022 11:32

I have 3 sons. I suspect you could give all the advice in the world but if the little one fell through the ice his big brothers would be in there after him.

Sending so much love to these families. How awful.

I have just said this to DH, if any of ours fell in the other would be straight in to get him out.

This is utterly heartbreaking and I am in tears. RIP beautiful little souls x

SicParvisMagna · 12/12/2022 12:02

I had no idea about any of this until about ten minutes ago when I opened the thread. I have no words. Those poor boys and their families. I don't know how you'd ever put one foot in front of the other after something like this. That community is going to be shattered.

MadeForThis · 12/12/2022 12:06

Heartbreaking

Cakeandcoffee93 · 12/12/2022 12:06

This is awful. Their mums and dads, just before Xmas. Having to go through this. Those poor babies

LakieLady · 12/12/2022 12:06

Where the fuck were their parents?

Where the fuck is your sense of decency and compassion?

Would you say that to their faces? I'm hoping and guessing not, so what's the point of asking people on here?
