Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

This is so so sad, those poor families.
We are at Centre Parcs for the weekend, and the lake here is frozen over. Yesterday there was an entire family with two kids playing on the lake while mum filmed with her phone and gave them instructions to smile, go further back etc.

I saw it from a distance with my heart in my mouth, and when a staff member came hurtling down the path towards them, to tell them how incredibly dangerous it was, and to please please never do it again, the adults appeared to be genuinely stunned at her being such a killjoy.

Hard as it is to believe it seems that some adults just don't think things through enough to see the risks, so it's no wonder children don't.

I’m Canadian, I skated on frozen lakes and we went ice fishing. The ice is meters deep. And even then I always thought ‘what if…’

Hope these children make it. I assume they’re year 6 -like my youngest - and enjoying that new found independence. My heart breaks for their families.

RubyPeridot · 11/12/2022 21:21

I live near this 🥺

CentrepieceOfDoom · 11/12/2022 21:22

It’s saying on the police’s Facebook that all four were in cardiac arrest and they’ve called off the search 😞 hopefully everyone will be ok

Greyarea12 · 11/12/2022 21:24

Awful. Praying the kids pull through.

I think they’re going to continue searching overnight but it’s no longer a search and rescue operation, so they’re not expecting to find anyone else alive at this stage.

Thinking of those poor emergency services personnel, a very difficult evening for them too.

Some people will genuinely not realise that a lake might only be frozen on the top centimetre or two, or how such ice is not strong enough to support people.

I grew up knowing that, because as a child I read the sort of fiction where children fell into frozen lakes and had to be rescued and nearly died. Little Women, to name just one example. Or they get lost in fog on the moors, or stranded on a mountain in a snowstorm, or cut off by the tide at the seaside. Either people don't read that kind of fiction any more, or they don't apply it to their own lives.

MrsMitford3 · 11/12/2022 21:33

How utterly heartbreaking for all involved.

MissyB1 · 11/12/2022 21:34

Please please God let these children survive 🙏 those poor poor parents 🙁

Ingleduh · 11/12/2022 21:35

I guess kids/teens don't know the danger unless they've been made aware .
I'd coincidentally mentioned the risk of frozen lakes to my two primary aged kids this afternoon as we'd been for a walk and my oldest said he'd love to get to the middle.
Il definitely bring this up with them in the morning to reinforce the danger.
I hope the 4 they rescued pull through. My heart breaks for the families of all involved.

My blood ran cold reading that. What the fuck is wrong with people??!

It sounds like the children were playing out alone, no parents from reports I’ve heard.

ThanksItHasPockets · 11/12/2022 21:40

The WM fire service are saying that the initial report was of six children playing in the lake.

I think sadly, a lot of people just don't read anything at all anymore.

I personally don't know how you get to adult age and not know you shouldn't walk on ice.

Those parents on the lake at centre parcs should probably have social services involvement. Jesus christ.

I don’t think it’s as simple as that. The lake isn’t far from housing. I can imagine the kids were playing out and walked to the lake themselves maybe. Personally I don’t let my kids play out or go out alone at all, until at least 13ish but plenty of people do. We can’t really speculate as to what’s happened yet.

Afterfire · 11/12/2022 21:47

excelledyourself · 11/12/2022 21:47

This is horrific.

@IntentionalError you have no idea what age these children even are, so how about you stop judging their poor parents?

@IntentionalError "children" can mean anyone under the age of 18. It sounds as though these children were young teens/pre teens and so fine to be out with friends on a Sunday afternoon.

I hate it when people like you leap to blame parents after every tragedy. Do you have any idea what those parents are going through right now? They don't need keyboard warriors making them feel worse.
