Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

Just seen the LBC story. My God. I hope they are not related.

Agree with this. I’m sure there must be a spike in deaths by drowning when boys hit pre-teen/teen years as so often we hear of incidents particularly in heatwaves. It is so incredibly sad because they are generally just out having fun and get into trouble through misadventure. But we owe it to young people to inform them of the risks.

Those poor kids and their families.

There is indeed a spike in deaths and serious injuries when boys hit adolescence. It's called 'the accident hump'. freakonomics.com/tag/puberty/

I have drilled this into my teen boys and hope it has somewhat sunk in. You are battling hormones though.

I'm pretty sure that eye witness reports have said it was all boys involved, although at that age it can be hard to tell and it is not confirmed yet.

It’s just started to break everywhere. There are no words.

Unconfirmed on social media that possibly same family. But unconfirmed.

Boy aged six in critical condition

Oh no. Just 6 years old. I think some of the boys had only gone onto the ice to help their friends. Horrific.

savvy7 · 12/12/2022 11:13

What a tragic loss of life

Ducksurprise · 12/12/2022 11:13

Three boys have died, 11, 10 and 8. I'm so sorry for those poor boys and poor parents.

This might be a stupid question, but if you see someone go through the ice and call 999, which service do you ask for? I think fire but I’m not sure!

Fire

But if you've ever unsure, ask for ambulance and they will inform police and fire for you so you don't need to worry about ringing all 3

Adelais · 12/12/2022 11:14

Absolutely heartbreaking. Those poor parents.

gogohmm · 12/12/2022 11:14

Very very sad

It's the age gap that made me wonder. I pray not.

The anchor on BBC News is holding back tears. It is unbearable.

sashh · 12/12/2022 11:15

Just coming on to say three have died, but I see it's already on here. The BBC news presenter nearly lost it RIP to the boys and what on earth can you say to the families?

RLScott · 12/12/2022 11:16

Heartbreaking. RIP to those little ones and god bless their families.

Ducksurprise · 12/12/2022 11:16

The news presenter on BBC just choked up, so very very sad.

spiderlight · 12/12/2022 11:16

Absolutely heartbreaking. Their poor, poor parents :(

It's not been reported but potentially could be brothers 😞

TheVeryThing · 12/12/2022 11:17

How devastating, those poor boys and their families.

Blocked · 12/12/2022 11:18

Devastating news. That could so easily be the boys in my family. In any of our families.

Itsokay2020 · 12/12/2022 11:18

Absolutely tragic, my heart breaks for their families, friends and everyone involved with the rescue. This is an awful tragedy for the local community and beyond

SnapCrackleandExplode · 12/12/2022 11:18

@Ducksurprise yes I just saw that.

Bless her. It's very rare that the news reporters show any emotion (I know they aren't supposed to but still)

So very sad 😢

Itsokay2020 · 12/12/2022 11:20

@Ducksurprise was watching too; she did incredibly well to regain her composure. Just the most awful breaking news to share with viewers

BringBackFoilWrappers · 12/12/2022 11:20

3 of them died 1 of them is 6 years old and in critical condition and the other 2 are missing presumed dead.
How awful right before Christmas too, I have shed a tear myself, I have a little boy and can't imagine how the parents are feeling.
Just awful. Sad

JustCakeInDrag · 12/12/2022 11:21

Press conference with police expected in 15 minutes.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 12/12/2022 11:23

Dreadful dreadful news. My uncles died at that age in the same way. That was back in the 1940s.

Thinking so much of their families today.
