Damn Dog Shit.

DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand · 29/11/2022 19:47

Yet another 20 minutes of my life scraping dog shit off my kids' shoes. Was dark, couldn't see the path, suddenly noticed the stench, there it is.

This is all too commonplace.
What can we do about it?

OP you know nothing about dogs. Stop with all the hate. You live in a society of dog lovers so it's probably best to cool the fuck out or you'll spend your whole existence wound up.

Ialwayswannasometimes · 30/11/2022 11:22

It's the bane of my life, we live literally a 2 minute walk to school and the pavement is littered with dog poo at least once a week my kid steps in it, it's always trodden all down the path so kids are clearly stepping in it then gojng into school and sitting on the carpet with dog shit all over their shoes etc
my son has adhd and asd so getting him to pay attention where he is walking is an absolute nightmare.
I live in a flat so it's basically impossible to clean the dog shif off because I am not doing it inside my flat

I doubt people want to sit on the grass verges on the streets near me OP. There'll also be traces of all sorts of stuff on there. Grass isn't exactly the cleanest thing to sit on is it. Honestly, I think you're being extremely precious. Clearly it's not even good enough for you for dog owners to pick up after their dogs. Would you prefer that all animals are exterminated?

I would prefer it if we only had natural animals in the environment. That's fair. This gigantic increasing influx of human -controlled pets, who have no value in the ecosystem, and leave so much shit around, is not acceptable to me. If people choose to have pets, I wish they'd keep their choices to their own homes and gardens.
If they haven't got a garden, maybe they can pay to take their dog to a designated field.

Of course animals poo. But dog shit has to be the worst we contend with out and about. I don't feel at all irate when we step through bird poo. I live Surrey/London borders and there are loads of foxes, but I very rarely see fox poo.
Afaik, other animals' poo doesn't blind us. A dogs can.

Exactly. We live on a road leading to a primary school, and there's shit everywhere. And as you say, these kids will be stepping in it, then walking around classrooms, sitting on the floor.

How DO you clean the poo off? We too live in a flat. Still not sure how I'm going to properly deal with my son's trainers. I've taken several kettle's worth of hot water up and down the stairs, gotten as much off as possible, using an old toothbrush and loads of washing up liquid. I've now brought the trainers upstairs and hosed them with the power shower. Probably shit particles everywhere. Still debating putting them in the washing machine. I'll then bleach the bath.

I'm out of pocket. And even if my son gets more wear out of these trainers, they are not in as good condition as they were before this.

why do homeless people have dogs then? Its a pretty poor living environment for a dog. But they seem to stay with their owners.

I don't have a dog btw.

Food. I bet of someone takes the dog and feeds it AND provides shelter, the dog will choose that I er the homeless person.

I actually think it's about half and half. The dog people are just very loud about what a dog -loving nation we are. I know loads of people who can't stand dogs or dog-worship and how there are now dogs everywhere.

I've not yet read the whole thread, but this is something I often think about, OP. Sometimes I watch people exercise their dogs on playing fields – literally where people play – and I don't understand why they think it's okay.

I do think all dogs should be registered and all faeces should be tested to determine which owner should face a fine. I also think that there should be move to train dogs to go only at home, as opposed to on any bit of grass (which could be somebody's lawn, a playing field, or any other place where nobody wants that shit, literally).

Agreed. Dogs where my kids play football is rank.

This might not be a popular comment but people also have a responsibility to look where they're going. Just saying. But just to reiterate, I would never leave dog shit on the ground.

I suspect there are a number of dog owners who just don't give a shit and they give the rest of us a bad name. Probably the same kind of people who let their large, aggressive off-lead dog without even a collar on attack my small, friendly dog. Some people are scum. Dog owners or not.

billyt · 30/11/2022 11:40

I walk my dog and pick up any shit he does every single time. I carry a pocketful of poo bags.

Don't paint all dog owners with the same badge.

Although I watched a couple of women walking eight dogs the other day, so I Assume dog-walking service. I had to point out one of their charges had crapped and they were hoping to ignore it.

theswoot · 30/11/2022 11:44

Having been so thoroughly chastised I think I am going to start taking my Kärcher pressure washer, some bleach and a blowtorch out with me and Ddog.

theswoot · 30/11/2022 11:45

(I do absolutely always pick up after him by the way, my suggestion that we keep the response in proportion was not about a guilty conscience on my part!)

Only good enough if you blowtorch the dog out of existence for shitting apparently 🙄

Isn't cat poo unpleasant too? But we allow cats to roam. What is your view on cats?

Israel has lots of feral cats so I suspect the cat owners there are not so cavalier about letting their pet cats roam...

I don't think cats should be allowed to roam.

"People have a responsibility to look where they are going" in order to not get dog shit in their shoe every time they leave the house is a ridiculous thing to say- you should be able to walk on a pavement without expecting to step in dog shit.
how are little kids supposed to look where they are going? My 9 year old has additional needs and bounces all over the place- realistically remembering to constantly look at the pavement for both myself and my 9 year old whilst also keeping an eye on my 5 year old and navigate around the 100 piles of dog shit isn't possible to do every time we step out the house.
dog shit isn't just gross it's dangerous and very often contain parasite eggs, and can lead to blindness

@DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand What on earth does being in Surrey have to do with anything? There are far nicer parts of the country! 😆

Here in my part of North Yorkshire you never see poo on the pavements. Very very rare. The locals are great at keeping the place clean & tidy! But then I live in an AONB

Absolutely nothing. Was just acknowledging the pp who said it was a big problem in their area of Surrey, after another pp berated me for moaning about something as trivial as cleaning shit off shoes yet again whilst there are bigger problems in less affluent areas.

Really sorry I've not managed to reply to everyone's posts. I've got shit to do now so offline for a while.

To sum up:

  • yes I was ranting as it was so so awful and I'm really fed up of dealing with the problem
  • yes, I think something really needs to be done. Funded by those who choose to keep dogs. DNA, CCTV, wardens, street-cleaning machines/pressure washers. That would help. Fund dog parks specifically for dogs to be. No shitting allowed elsewhere.
  • ban dogs from places where not everyone wants to encounter them - eateries, supermarkets, shops, art galleries, cinemas
  • yes, cats should be kept indoors
  • fox/bird/mouse shit is inconsequential

Also cats usually bury their poo and it will just biodegrade. Dog shit on pavements is grim but I think perhaps cameras would be better or video footage. Might be a deterrent at least. Some of you seem to be using your hatred of animals to punish them eg suggesting nappies, not allowing them to go to the toilet when walking or making them eat substances which makes their poo turn a certain colour. If anyone is to blame it’s the owner. Don’t punish the dog or cat. Humanity is awful at the best of times. We need to treat the beautiful creatures of this earth with care and respect to live along side us.

This is bollocks. I read it all the time but have seen lots of cats shut in my garden and never seen one even attempt to bury it. Not even the time I forgot to cover the sandpit when it started raining. I got the kids and stuff inside and saw a big cat shit right in the sandpit. It has never been used since.

No, no, sometimes they do bury it, always in a the kind of place where you're doing regular gardening, just deep enough that you don't see it before sticking your trowel or hand straight in a stinking rotten pile of it.

Ylvamoon · 30/11/2022 12:34

I tell you something OP.

I live close to an industrial estate... it's quite green and lovely to walk my dog especially at the weekend. From there you can walk through some woods into the fields- it's a public footpath.

Sadly, I had to stop - especially in the summer months. It's not because of the other dog owners ot dog shit which can be a problem. Nope it's actually human excrement that is left behind bushes and in the woods! Utterly vile!

Yes: my neighbours’ cats can’t decide which they prefer, to leave an unburied poo on the lawn or to target my herb garden or any other edible gardening area, rendering it useless, and burying it carefully. So they offer a 360-degree full service, shit absolutely everywhere.

I suppose the difference is at home I can go and police the garden before taking the DC out there, I can set up a sprinkler and in summer work near the back door with a water pistol to hand, use those lion poo things, etc. I can’t do a patrol of the pavements and park ahead of walking my daughter to nursery, and I suspect the dog-crazies would look askance if I brought a super soaker to the park to squirt their dogs.

Cat poo is definitely a problem, but it’s also used as a “what about?” weapon in any thread about dog poo.

Thecat19342 · 30/11/2022 12:53

I hear you OP. The amount of times I've cleaned shoes, the pram & balance bike wheels. It's infuriating- I don't know what the answer is as good owners already pick up, read Facebook community announcements.

My middle once tripped over the pavement slab outside his school and went sliding into dog poop, we had to make a u turn back home as his coat & trousers absolutely hummed (they went straight in the bin) . I have noted a lot more dogs waiting for owners outside the gate in the past two years which is a real struggle getting out of the school gates without being jumped at/ tripping over leads alongside looking for poo/ watching kids.

Well they are allowed and they do - I suspect it will continue to be so until the end of time.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/11/2022 16:50

I recall on a 'Not the Nine o'clock News' calendar (each day had a saying or thought) there was one that said something along the lines of,

'Given an unlimited budget and all the worlds scientists should they work on solving the world hunger problem or on a device for getting dog shit out of corrugated soled shoes?'

DarkForces · 30/11/2022 16:51

What you need to do op is form a political party, get a majority in parliament and pass a law. I agree that people need to pick up dog shit but we share the planet with plenty of creatures. I suggest you widen your platform to include all wildlife, cats... that way you can have the sterile world you deserve
