Damn Dog Shit.

DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand · 29/11/2022 19:47

Yet another 20 minutes of my life scraping dog shit off my kids' shoes. Was dark, couldn't see the path, suddenly noticed the stench, there it is.

This is all too commonplace.
What can we do about it?

I confess I’ve had to chuck shoes away before (before I was poor!) my stomach couldn’t cope with it

I have too, especially at the toddler stage where their shoes were so small the shit went right over the tops. It's up the sides on today's trainers, and I am close to binning them, except they are brand new and I really can't afford to replace them. :(

I COMPLETELY understand your ire.
Someone trod dog shit right into my house and I was so repulsed I actually took up the carpet. Now even trades have to take shoes off.

I say this as a dog owner..but some dogs have voluminous turds {I wouldn't want such a big dog because of a large bore anus and huge poos}

"large bore anus" 😂😆🤮

I don't have carpet, for this reason. Though also, no shoes in my house, but still, if you take them off at the front door, you still have to step around on the floor where your shoes have been, so trace will always carry into the other rooms.

Last tradesman here came with blue shoe covers which he produced when I asked him to take off his shoes.

Sorry you had to tear up the carpet though.

Wow. That's outrageous. Though maybe if dogs pissing on floors in shops enough is what it takes for people to ban them from shops and restaurants, that would be a happy result.

My friend was in a cafe recently and a dog shat on the floor. It was really runny, and people just left.

That is revolting.
They should have been shamed into clearing it up.

I'd definitely have said something.
I do think there are lots of very badly behaved dogs about at the moment..Maybe people buying them in lockdown?

I do remember in lockdown there being tons of shit about..Seems to be better now ...

I don't even like dogs much, but even I think you all need to calm down! (However if I see someone miss a pooh I do holler at them to pick it up!)

Try going to Paris, it's absolutely EVERYWHERE. Really gross!

I've been to Paris. Must have been lucky, it was MUCH cleaner than here, shit-wise. Also saw a little road-cleaner motorised machine going round at 6am - I'd looked out of my window to see the roads and pavements all wet, yet was sure it hadn't been raining. Then spotted the guy in his little cart, water squirting out whilst bristles circulated around, then hosed away down the drains. The streets looked fantastic.

I'm generally calm-ish. Just particularly irate tonight as dealing with it was so recent and exceptionally vile. 😞😞😞😞🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

I don't know what happened as my friend left. She said it smelled so bad and was permeating the air, they could not stay.

Yes, you're right about the increase in dogs. There's an increase in ignorant idiots who haven't trained their dogs, and there's an increase in the number of dogs racing up to my children, wanting to slobber on them or jump and paw at them. Terrifying when these dogs to my children are the size a horse is to us.

The smell from the poo was gross.
The bloke was very apologetic, but it made me feel ill.
Blue shoe covers are a great idea!

My son used to get it in the nobbly tyres of his mountain bike...He used to cuss as well.
Trainers seem designed to hold poo into the myriad patterns on the sole..Believe me, I have been there...Plus when son was small, he fell over and landed into poo.
I don't know what the answer is re dog poo.

An idiot around here won't keep his POO~dle cross on a lead, so it lags behind him, sniffing, and can poo ''Unseen''....He is a twat.

It’s unfortunate you appear to have had so much literal shit to deal with- it really does sound as though you have a significant problem where you live. I honestly can’t remember the last time we had to dodge dog shit. Sounds like a daily occurrence round your way. You could wear shoe covers to save the shit seeping up the sides. Also I wouldn’t put shitty shoes in your washing machine. You’ll have micro particles of dog poop on your pillow cases and shirts for years

There was a huge poodle called ''Ignaaaatius!'' that was bounding up to children and knocking them over.

Try calling out ''NO!' when a dog comes near your children.
Stand tall, Look it in the eye, and say ''NO!'' in a strong voice.

I do this ..and it often works.

I don't want to be leapt up on by other's dogs, and children certainly don't.

This is the most ridiculous thread I've ever read!

No it's not - she's making an important point. There's tons of dog mess on the pavement in my area too and I'm sick of it. It's bad enough when I step in it myself - I chucked away a pair of boots thr other day as a result - but my toddler gets it on him too. Even the more responsible owners who attempt to clear it up often leave gross smears on the pavement or path that still ends up being stepped in. I'd hugely support some sort of licence system.

Oh yes, been there multiple times with bike wheels, pram wheels, scooters, rollerskates. My kids have had it on their hands, and one kid on their leg. Luckily not literally rolling in it or on their faces.

I do know what the answer is. Dog licencing. Make them pay for the problem. Night not eradicate it 100%, but it would be a vast improvement.

I don't think so - during my years of parenting, we have lived in four completely different areas (including one abroad for a year). The problem is widespread. But worse with kids. They run, they don't look. Etc.

I hope you're joking about poo particles. But now you've said that, I'm gonna hose them down in the bath first, on the highest scaldy heat setting, then bleach the bath, then run them in the washing machine, then bleach the machine on two hot runs.
Used to use reusable nappies, really think the machine does deal with poo. I hope!!!!!

Thank you. Oh I do. But sometimes these dogs are so damn fast. Been told by idiot owners I'm instilling a phobia in my kids. And that they are only being friendly. Drives me nuts.

Really unsure now, that you're both not just winding me up! Surely washing machines deal with vomit and other stuff just fine.

What do I do with the trainers then, to get them really clean? My son will not wear them unless they are free from shit.

I really don't understand the desire to have dog's when there's 15 years of their rank shit to clean up.

Don't take your dogs out further from your home then, that you can't get back to in time if they need to shit. It needs to be socially unacceptable to let them shit out and about.

My dog prefers to poo at home and we walk him in dog park and off lead areas and pick up. Not pavemented areas unless on the way to the two local parks, where we are in the dog areas, not the kid areas. We are the perfect people according to you.

However, not understanding the desire is interesting. My dog loves my family more than anyone else ever will. He unconditionally, wordlessly cares for us. We are his whole life and he asks for next to nothing. My kid is ND and didn't have a lot of friends for several years. The dog gave her love and physical affection. He also taught her how to care about someone less powerful than herself, how to be empathetic when no one is watching.

Dogs are some of the very best creatures. They domesticated us as well as the other way around. They make eye contact with us and not each other because we like it. They feel love. They understand apologies.

You don't have to have a dog, no one cares. But dogs are the most human animal there is. They have evolved with us in a way no other animal has. They are genuinely special.

All dogs should have their dna registered. All dog poo checked. Massive fines to pay for this.

Having to fork out £1000 for the first offence, more for the second, might make people think twice.

And please don't bleat on about how that is unfair. Have a dog if you must, take responsibility or pay the fine.

I've not yet read the whole thread, but this is something I often think about, OP. Sometimes I watch people exercise their dogs on playing fields – literally where people play – and I don't understand why they think it's okay.

I do think all dogs should be registered and all faeces should be tested to determine which owner should face a fine. I also think that there should be move to train dogs to go only at home, as opposed to on any bit of grass (which could be somebody's lawn, a playing field, or any other place where nobody wants that shit, literally).

Afreshstar · 30/11/2022 03:44

DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand · 30/11/2022 00:15

£1000 per year per dog. Fine of £10k for first shit. If it's runny and you can't pick it up, you stay put whilst calling a dog shit cleaning service at great cost to yourself.
Seriously so hacked off right now.

I agree! it’s just completely out of control and I’m fairly sure dog faeces can be pretty harmful to humans.

Apparently one resident in our building decided to let her dog piss in our lift , and it’s a lovely very clean modern flat development, and someone else had to clean it. I’m worried it’s going to be shit next time. I’m bit of a daydreamer so I find I have to concentrate hard to avoid dog crap which kind of takes away some of the enjoyment of a simple walk! And there’s certain streets and parks I avoid because there’s so much of it.

I think most dog owners probably clean up but a significant selfish minority don’t. But given how many dog owners there are nowadays that minority is still a fair few hence we see it everywhere.

I think the huge number of dogs and the dog nuttery abounding is a problem. It's insane to me that they are now in cafes and restaurants and shops. So unsanitary. I don't think it's fair to those of us who don't want to deal with dogs and their shit.

I was in a busy train recently. This man and his dog took up 3 seats altogether despite the fact the standing area was crammed full and then as we were getting off the dog decided to shake its head vigorously. I watched in disgust as dog drool went everywhere, thinking wow this is what I pay my expensive train fare for.

I think now more than ever there needs to be cafes hotels etc which specifically don’t cater to dogs because not everyone wants to be around them.

I think hotels state on their website but many cafes & restaurants don’t and I often find myself next to a dog that has came in after I’ve been seated and is drooling or passing gas while I’m trying to eat. I know some people don’t mind and that’s fair enough, but some of us do.

MadameMackenzie · 30/11/2022 03:55

@DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand £1000 a year? Don't be insane. Dogs are wonderful companions to people on their own. Pensioners especially. My mum has a wonderful dog who has literally kept her going since my Dad died. She'd be a shell of herself if it wasn't for him.
She lives on a measly state pension after the bank she worked for screwed her out of her company pension, and there's no way she could afford to have her dog if she had to pay that. His insurance is already a shocking amount. You're being absolutely ridiculously disproportionate

MadameMackenzie · 30/11/2022 04:11

@oakleaffy It is disgusting that a dog poo'd in a cafe but it sounds to me like that dog was very poorly. The poor thing must've been desperate and they only ever do runny ones when very poorly. How on earth you can call that 'badly behaved' is beyond me. Next time you have diarrhoea imagine being stuck in a cafe with no way to communicate that you need the toilet and attached to a lead

I lived in about 7-10 different areas of London and there was, to some extent, a dog poo problem in each area including the more affluent areas. The worst one for me was an area in Wandsworth. Seems to be an OK area but my lovely tree lined street was always lined with shit too. I used to walk on the roads sometimes if I was in a rush and it was early/late enough for not many cars to be About as it was quicker than dodging shit on the pavement.

I’ve lived in 4/5 other areas in England and some in Scotland too and it was the same story. On a short walk you’re likely
to see at least one dog poo.

if you’re not noticing it could be there you’re walking right into it. I often see strangers march right into it or friends also unaware until I yell watch the shit!

MadameMackenzie · 30/11/2022 04:21

@DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand What on earth does being in Surrey have to do with anything? There are far nicer parts of the country! 😆

Here in my part of North Yorkshire you never see poo on the pavements. Very very rare. The locals are great at keeping the place clean & tidy! But then I live in an AONB
