Can I see under your stairs?

Following on from the fabulous bedroom thread which gave me so much inspiration!

we have a slanted space under our stairs that is very badly used to chuck shoes/bags etc in and it looks a mess. We have some of those shoe holders but they seem to be stuffed full of shoes that are not in regular use. I feel like we could do so much with the space but I’m not sure how!! Anyone want to share how you organise this space?

I have a small under counter freezer under the stair area with shelving along the wall.

Having moved from a house with a larder freezer to just a integrated fridge freezer it was one of my first purchases when I moved.

I love those pull out drawers, or pull out stairs (but have neither).
Mine has the cordless vac on the wall, a hanging rail with coats across, shoes on the floor and stuff* crammed behind the coats which I have to fight my way through to get anything.

* steam mop, dog food sack (actually 5 atm as I had a free offer from Tails), cooler box, other crap, late-DH's ashes.

We have just had a tiny WC put in and with the remaining triangle bit of space we are having massive drawers built. No pics I am afraid but saw the same when we viewed houses and loved it.

I would share but if I open the door a whole avalanche full of crap will fall out

We put wine racks in there and use it as alcohol storage. We decided to do that as we used it as a dumping ground for coats, shoes, and anything that didn't have a home elsewhere. The shoes are now in a cupboard by the front door, coats go back to the bedroom. Much tidier all round.

autienotnaughty · 25/11/2022 16:22

Only storage cupboard other than kitchen cupboards so it has -
Vacuum cleaner
Mop bucket
Brush
Carrier bags
Coats (behind door)
Dog food
Ds bike
DS scooter (also no shed/garage)

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 25/11/2022 16:25

Our was the same OP. Dumping ground. I bought 2 ottomans from dunelm (two for £20 I think) and we shove the shoes in there.

Well if it's in the spirit of the bedroom thread then here is mine. Not much storage though!

Office filing cabinets, a pile of filing that needs filing and the draws on the right have all the scarves, bags, sunglasses, winter hats etc in. The lovely rattan cat double layered cat bed is no longer slept in since the kitten that loved it very sadly died. The other kitten would rather be on a proper bed somewhere or stuck up a tree.

@HavfrueDenizKisi

Very nice but surely that is just the gatehouse. Would love to see the stairs in the main house.

Dramaalpacas · 25/11/2022 16:38

I like this idea! Much neater than our junk hole

We have those fitted drawer things, they’re fantastic!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 25/11/2022 16:42

Catlitterqueen · 25/11/2022 16:43

We don’t have stairs but do have a hall cupboard which is referred to as ‘the cupboard under the stairs.
it doubles as our airing/boiler cupboard.
Contents currently -

Cat litter
Sacks of dried cat food

Lots of coats that nobody wears much!

How does one use that seat without braining oneself on a regular basis?

TheNoodlesIncident · 25/11/2022 16:44

Ours is inaccessible in the house as it's the space for the outside loo. What I want though is the sliding drawer things for shoe storage and the like. That's my dream...

I now have fitted drawer envy.

So do I and I don't even have any stairs.

😀

Pamparam · 25/11/2022 16:53

We have a (very small) toilet!

Pamparam · 25/11/2022 16:56

I can't share a photo for some reason but it's very similar to this pin.it/2od2v7b

stuntbubbles · 25/11/2022 16:56

No pic but in our last house we split the space in half: half at the highest point became the shoe/coat/crap space and I put a curtain rail and curtain across so it was all easily accessible but also easily hidden. The half at the lower end of the stairs we had three doors put on so it was all easily accessible: the really tiny bit at the bottom just a couple of steps high was good for bulk buys of loo roll.

New house we’re hoping to do an understairs loo, at which point I’ll set fire to all the coats and shoes.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 25/11/2022 16:57

@Fladdermus the butler is very short actually. Works well when he answers the phone.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 25/11/2022 16:59

Our stairs run up the middle of the house between the kitchen diner and the living room. The result is no under stairs storage (a recess in both rooms doesn't really count).

Chikapu · 25/11/2022 17:00

We had ours fitted with cupboards and drawers, kind of like this
