In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

For goodness sake! She doesn't eat pork - probably for cultural/religious reasons - in her world 'bacon' is a non pork product - so that makes her 'stupid'?

If that were true, it would make her eye-wateringly stupid, yes.

I doubt there'll be a single person in the UK who wouldn't check their bacon isn't from pork if they can't eat it.

I mean why wouldn't you check? 😆

I think it would be considered 'not in the spirit of the site' to mock someone's religious beliefs, or possibly fall under the 'hate speech' bracket, depending on what was said,.

"Not in the spirit of the site" isn't in the Mumsnet talk guidelines. Is it an unwritten rule? It's so vague and subjective as to be practically meaningless anyway. As for hate speech, only an extremist would consider "laughing at someone's religious beliefs" to constitute hate speech.

So it seems like it's not against MN rules after all.

I thought a cattle grid was for getting the mud off the cows' hooves so they didn't make the farm muddy.

I'm an intelligent person with a good career, but fuck me, I can be stupid sometimes 😅

I've spent YEARS battling with the tin opener and only discovered a few months ago that the handle splits in half to make it easy to pop on and off. No one told me this!!

So many things I don't seem to grasp. I'm also autistic (yet I walk among you and most people would never know mwhahaha.....).

Most of my FB is me just sharing the latest idiotic thing I've done. The fact I'm a giant dickhead means I'm a constant source of entertainment for myself.

I DO know bacon comes from a pig, but it's the kind of mistake I'd be likely to make. And I would find it hilarious if someone pointed it out to me.

The point is you can laugh at yourself and other people without being cruel. Finding something funny doesn't mean you are mocking them or sneering. It's just a humorous observation.

My beloved, departed dad had a neurodegenerative disease which included an aggressive dementia. In amongst all of the challenges, fuck me, there were some unintentionally funny moments. He managed to gain access to the CT scanning control hub, simultaneously locking out all of the staff, and refusing to let anyone in. He was there with complete control over this million-pound equipment looking extremely pleased with himself. To this day I don't know how the sneaky bastard managed it 😅

In other news, in the last few years I've developed an allergy to bacon (but not black pudding). Think it's the curing process but not sure. Either way, I can't eat bacon any more. My life is a pale shadow of what it once was.....

@ExhaustedFlamingo This is a fantastic post and a lot of it echos my own experiences and outlook. Laughing makes so many things better. I remember at my FIL funeral there was a bit of a mishap and I looked over to find my MIL trying her very hardest to not burst out laughing. We still laugh about it now. It bought levity to such a difficult situation.

I can’t laugh at your bacon allergy though. You poor poor thing.

Haggis is a sheep stomach filled with offal, oatmeal, onions, suet, seasoning and spices

You're really selling this to me <boak> - do you moonlight for the Haggis Marketing Board, Danvers?

Haggis is great! Anybody who is willing to eat the less challlenging bits of an animal. e.g. chicken nuggets, bacon sandwich, should really be prepared to face eating the rest of the animal too.

And yet, for god knows what reason, here you are.

This thread’s done me the world of good though. I often wonder if it’s fair that I earn such good money while others really struggle, and now I think that given what passes for “normal” out there that it’s fine.

StickofVeg · 15/11/2022 18:42

This reminds me of when I was out to dinner with a colleague. He was Hindu and said "Well I can't eat beef so I'll have the lasagne". I never said a word as I just didn't know what to say!

I just don't like the taste of haggis. Have tried it several times but just really don't like it. It's not about what's in it for me, just the taste.

I was finished off by "Global Nomad" - gloriously pretentious😂😂😂

It's a thing, apparently. Aka glomads. Whether they ever glamp in glyurts I don't know but I'm taken with this helpful clarification:
Unlike traditional nomads, global nomads travel alone or in pairs rather than with a family and livestock.

Hmph, not even a couple of emotional support goats?

Bacon can be made of several things: Pork, Beef, Turkey, Fake Meat.

It's astounding to read in this day and age that people still make the assumption that middle aged, white, British women cannot be Muslim, Jewish, or many other religions. Heck, even some Christian strands don't eat pork.

How DARE you imply that Muslim or Jewish middle aged, white women do not know that bacon is made of pork? Are you calling us stupid?

Maybe it was the blood from black pudding that she didn't like the thought of . The cafe were wrong to talk to her in that way and should have replaced immediately.

Replaced what? Her bacon sandwich she'd ordered because she decided she doesn't eat pork?

MatronicO6 · 15/11/2022 18:47

Genuine question for everyone saying in some countries bacon is not pork. What countries use the word bacon for a product that is not in fact pork? And if I went to these countries and ordered bacon what would I get?

There are so many assumptions about "Britishness" on this thread... it's ridiculous.

People can be white, have a local accent and not be British...

Are you saying that only non-British, white people with a local accent are too stupid to know that bacon is made from pork? Have you any idea how insulting that is?

Why not report those posts, then, instead of joking about them on the thread? This is exactly the point I have been trying to make from the outset - people are very quick to declare themselves kind and liberal when it suits them, but they think nothing of following the crowd like sheep when someone starts a bit of (as they see it) mildly amusing jeering.

If we want to live in a genuinely kind and inclusive society, we have to behave in a kind and inclusive way in the small things - the insidious mockery of those who are different - not just standing up in a performative way when the more 'obvious' examples of bullying and discrimination appear.

I really suspect that there are none. I have seen the description used for non-pork “bacon” in hotels in Muslim countries, but these are hotels that cater to European tourists, there’s no reason to assume that anyone outside of this would be using the word.

Zanatdy · 15/11/2022 18:50

In some countries it’s often Turkey. But surely you’d check. My kids didn’t eat pork when young (dads religion, so his request until old enough to decide for themselves) so I always checked this kind of thing.

Erm ... but chicken nuggets are the more challenging bits. "Beaks & arseholes" - made cosmetically palatable via MRM (mechanically recovered meat) machines.
