In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

"Haggis is great! Anybody who is willing to eat the less challlenging bits of an animal. e.g. chicken nuggets, bacon sandwich, should really be prepared to face eating the rest of the animal too."

I just don't like the taste of haggis. Have tried it several times but just really don't like it. It's not about what's in it for me, just the taste.

Same here - I am quite happy to eat offal (not tripe, though), but I can't get away with haggis.

Bu how can anyone describe bacon as "challenging"? It is inviting to the point of being seductive . . . my tastebuds are quivering now!

Glomad sounds like something GP hould look at 😂

I agree - it's definitely hormonal.

<nods wisely>

Have you tried rubbing half a raw potato on it? Or a bit of Sudocrem?

I really suspect that there are none. I have seen the description used for non-pork “bacon” in hotels in Muslim countries, but these are hotels that cater to European tourists, there’s no reason to assume that anyone outside of this would be using the word.

I know that maccies in muslim countries usually says chicken strips or similar. I saw beef bacon specified in some and some shops. Well I went through 4 only so far and obviously not every supermarket. 😂 no nomad here.

I've spent YEARS battling with the tin opener and only discovered a few months ago that the handle splits in half to make it easy to pop on and off. No one told me this!!

I have a corner wall cupboard in the kitchen. I spent a couple of decades standing on a stool to try reach in and put stuff around the corner by feel...until the day I found quite by accident that the folding door opens fully. So there's two of us.

In some countries it’s often Turkey. But surely you’d check. My kids didn’t eat pork when young (dads religion, so his request until old enough to decide for themselves) so I always checked this kind of thing.

Of course you'd check.

Why not report those posts, then, instead of joking about them on the thread? This is exactly the point I have been trying to make from the outset - people are very quick to declare themselves kind and liberal when it suits them, but they think nothing of following the crowd like sheep when someone starts a bit of (as they see it) mildly amusing jeering.

If we want to live in a genuinely kind and inclusive society, we have to behave in a kind and inclusive way in the small things - the insidious mockery of those who are different - not just standing up in a performative way when the more 'obvious' examples of bullying and discrimination appear.

Your sense of humour bypass was successful, I see.

Sorry I didn't pick that up at all. My mistake.

No worries!
My post wasn’t very clear.

Ultimately MNHQ can delete anything the moderators feel is inappropriate.

Do you ever just, laugh? serious question. What do you find funny. I don’t need a sanctimonious list of everything you don’t, just what is your sort of sense of humour?

I really, REALLY object to you defending my religion and my ethnic minority with your inane, half-assed virtue signalling.

I do not need your cos-playing 'protector of the offended' on my my behalf along with implying that I do not know what bacon is made of because my ethnicity or country of origin makes me ill-informed and unable to understand the culture of the country that I now reside in.

Be kind my arse. You are serving yourself and telling everyone else all about how kind you are.

What’s that?

I did try turkey bacon when I first saw it in the shops. I decided I’d prefer to have the real stuff instead, just less often. I’ve fortunately got a connection to a dodgy imam who’ll say it’s halal if I buy him a pint.

Mutton bacon. It's like streaky bacon. Tastes nice. Asdas with halal sections have it.

I can't abide by turkey.

I've seen 'turkey bacon' and even 'beef bacon' abroad but whenever I have just seen the word 'bacon' it is always pork.

Though I'm not as worldly as some posters on here

What a very eloquent post @Haffiana

Very well said Flowers

Maybe it was the blood from black pudding that she didn't like the thought of . The cafe were wrong to talk to her in that way and should have replaced immediately.

What, the burnt crumb of bap that it turned out to be?

Whalesong · 15/11/2022 19:10

MatronicO6 · 15/11/2022 18:47

Genuine question for everyone saying in some countries bacon is not pork. What countries use the word bacon for a product that is not in fact pork? And if I went to these countries and ordered bacon what would I get?

I've seen it in hotels in Oman and the Maldives. It was just labelled "bacon" but was clearly turkey bacon (despite being hotels aimed at foreigners).
But I don't buy that someone who lives in the UK and speaks with a local accent is unaware that "bacon" here means pork, unless it says vegan bacon, turkey bacon etc.

I haven't made any reference at all to your religion or ethnicity. I suggested that the woman in the cafe might not eat bacon for various reasons, including amongst them ''cultural' reasons' but also possible reasons of learning difficulty, dementia, or ill-health. I haven't said anything about anyone's country of origin making them ill-informed. Are you confusing me with another poster on the thread?

The poster I was quoting above suggested some posts were offensive and should be removed by the moderators, but at the same time was laughing at them - I suggested if they thought they were offensive, they should report them, not laugh at them/with them.

I am defending the woman in the cafe. I have seen someone very dear to me be mocked in very similar situations, due to mistakes made through dementia - I can and will defend anyone who is vulnerable and being mocked, regardless of the reason.

You don't have to agree with me, but you have no right to twist my words to other posters as some kind of personal attack-defence of you personally.
