Liz Jones - I do feel a tiny bit sorry for her but she still has no self awareness

Article in the DM today about how she's getting evicted from her rental cottage as the landlady wants to sell. Focus of the article is renters with no security - which I agree is an issue.

So she talks about how when she was made bankrupt she struggled to find somewhere to rent. Had to put all her nice furniture in storage. She has spent 59k "decorating" this cottage - new kitchen, underfloor heating, etc and has now lost all that.

I'm sorry but 59k would be a 50% on a 2 bed terrace in many cities in the UK. I don't know maybe she couldn't get a mortgage for the rest. Though surely she didn't spend all her savings on this cottage. And how did she have 59k if she was made bankrupt a few years ago?

Anyway the thing which really bugged me is she says women of her age have had it harder than "generation rent". Really? Had it harder when she had the opportunity to buy property (and did so) when it was a quarter of the price it is now. She spent years writing about her luxury lifestyle, her horses, trips to Paris, expensive skincare, expensive yoga classes.

I have limited sympathy for someone who has spunked a very good income on frivolous shit and moans about being skint especially when they continue to make shit financial decisions.

Still wish I knew who the Rock Star was. Was Jim Kerr the most likely suspect?

60k would just about buy you a 2 bed terrace outright near me.

Hellsmovie · 14/11/2022 08:51

@QuebecBagnet

Your living in a dream world if you think 59k would be 50% deposit on a 2 bedroom
terrace in most cities

Charlieiscool · 14/11/2022 08:53

She doesn’t want a two bed terrace because she has a ton of animals

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/11/2022 08:54

Rarely has a woman so little little self-awareness and poor money management skills.

Fleurdaisy · 14/11/2022 08:54

No idea who she is but spending almost 60k improving a house you don’t own is stupid.
Living beyond 60 takes planning and you start by 1.keeping every penny you have and 2. Making every penny work for you. Giving away £59 is madness.

Croque · 14/11/2022 08:57

"I'm looking for a tenant for my rundown shack. Liz, are you still looking for somewhere to live? 🤔"

EmmaAgain22 · 14/11/2022 08:57

But is any of what she says actually true?

Whydidimarryhim · 14/11/2022 08:58

only a fool would spend money renovating a property that wasn’t her own. Silly woman with no money sense.

LillyLucille · 14/11/2022 08:59

I just don't know about this!

I was once a journalist (still do a bit) and I know that what appears in the press especially the DM sometimes falls short of the full story (putting it politely.)

Liz has made a lot of money writing about herself and this is another example.

What is truth and what is fiction is hard to define. Because it beggars belief she'd be so silly.

@uggmum Do you mean Richmond N Yorks, or Richmond Surrey?

Croque · 14/11/2022 09:01

Isn't there a pile in the Essex countryside coming her way soon via inheritance?

I don't know.

BlueThursday · 14/11/2022 09:01

How timely

Liz Jones - I do feel a tiny bit sorry for her but she still has no self awareness
Sloth66 · 14/11/2022 09:06

the DM encourages her to write goady articles like this for clickbait. I suspect some exaggeration here. Stupid behaviour but I feel sorry for her, having to earn money writing these articles

Buteverythingsfine · 14/11/2022 09:08

She'll fall on her feet. I very much doubt she's actually going to present as homeless to the council. It is frustrating when in rental long-term not to be able to change things, and putting up, say, for 6 years with an already dated kitchen. you can't style the house as you want, which makes it feel like it's never your home. On the continent, rents are often longer-term and in some countries you do have to install a kitchen when you move in! (e.g. Germany). Not here though and she was foolish. This is very unlikely to be the end of the story for her though.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/11/2022 09:08

She's profoundly unwell and deserves sympathy IMHO. The Daily Mail and others are exploiting this in a most dreadful way and the best thing to do is not to look.

LadyKenya · 14/11/2022 09:09

thelobsterquadrille · 14/11/2022 08:23

It's pretty clearly she has some serious mental health difficulties.

While I appreciate she's frustrating I do feel sorry for her.

This. There is obviously something going on here with her.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 14/11/2022 09:10

Who the fuck spends £200 on a rental never mind £59k
is she absolutely thick as fuck

AutumnCrow · 14/11/2022 09:11

Croque · 14/11/2022 09:01

I don't know.

Possibly, but she's also supposed to have six siblings that I would presume inheritance will be shared with.

The whole kitchen story sounds very suspicious indeed, on the veracity front.

WotsitsQuavers · 14/11/2022 09:15

Is it all true?

In her wiki it states she's 71?

LindyLou2020 · 14/11/2022 09:18

Byfleet · 14/11/2022 08:45

@uggmum
No way are there two bedroom cottages to rent in Richmond for £800pm !

Richmond, Yorkshire. Not Richmond, Surrey!

hostawater · 14/11/2022 09:21

She is writing very successful clickbait for the Mail. 'Liz Jones: Why I got some financial advice and made some sensible decisions' will not get people frothing themselves into a frenzy, although it might be her controversial new direction for 2023, along with 'Jan Moir: Let's just give people a break, eh?' and 'Dan Wootton: Why I now think Prince Harry is a jolly good egg'.

Buteverythingsfine · 14/11/2022 09:21

I wouldn't spend £59k obviously, but spending some money when it's your own home for that time, and have guests, and your children live in it- well, that's perfectly normal IMO. Some people live their whole lives in rental- should they live their entire life around magnolia walls and shitty carpets and never ever have the decor they like?

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 14/11/2022 09:21

She could have bought a normal house ( not idyllic cottage ) and lived there many years ago for a pittance so she is nothing like generation rent !

She did own her own house for 30+ years before being bankrupt so nothing like a lot of current 20 or 30 somethings who can only dream about buying somewhere.
She said everyone hates a high earning woman which made it seem like she was a victim of other people's behaviour, when in reality I imagine her situation is due to her making a lot of poor decisions. And listing all the expensive stuff she has had to sell or give away is a bit rich (pun intended) when she's trying to present herself as destitute!

StickySnotBalls · 14/11/2022 09:22

She's always searching for something else, something better and living above her means. I'm not sure who she's trying to impress but she needs to work on her self esteem
She values herself by what she can buy
That's sad

Moanycowbag · 14/11/2022 09:22

I can't believe she paid that much for this tiny little kitchen www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/124488737#/media?channel=RES_BUY&id=media2&ref=photoCollage

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 14/11/2022 09:23

She's a bit bonkers and I think has made some unwise financial decisions in her life.

But she's a regular (is she on the staff list?) DM reporter so that must fairly well, and if so (especially if she's staff) and especially (nice use of that word here!) as she's living in Yorkshire which is much cheaper to buy in than in London, then why on earth hasn't she got herself on the housing ladder before now?
