Liz Jones - I do feel a tiny bit sorry for her but she still has no self awareness

Article in the DM today about how she's getting evicted from her rental cottage as the landlady wants to sell. Focus of the article is renters with no security - which I agree is an issue.

So she talks about how when she was made bankrupt she struggled to find somewhere to rent. Had to put all her nice furniture in storage. She has spent 59k "decorating" this cottage - new kitchen, underfloor heating, etc and has now lost all that.

I'm sorry but 59k would be a 50% on a 2 bed terrace in many cities in the UK. I don't know maybe she couldn't get a mortgage for the rest. Though surely she didn't spend all her savings on this cottage. And how did she have 59k if she was made bankrupt a few years ago?

Anyway the thing which really bugged me is she says women of her age have had it harder than "generation rent". Really? Had it harder when she had the opportunity to buy property (and did so) when it was a quarter of the price it is now. She spent years writing about her luxury lifestyle, her horses, trips to Paris, expensive skincare, expensive yoga classes.

I have limited sympathy for someone who has spunked a very good income on frivolous shit and moans about being skint especially when they continue to make shit financial decisions.

Still wish I knew who the Rock Star was. Was Jim Kerr the most likely suspect?

I do think she is fundamentally a survivor - she'll be bailed out of this by someone or something!

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/11/2022 22:26

She's never to going to live somewhere cheap because it's all about appearances with her. Everything is about appearances.

The more I read of her the more bonkers she sounds... however we all make our beds as they say.

She reminds me of my friend who spent 140k of her divorce monies in 2.5 years, much of it without even renting. she is obsessed with labels- i am reading her book, and she never just says 'my chair'. she says my Ercol chair or my £4000 Vispring bed. She is unable to look at anything without looking at the label.
So it would be a living nightmare to her to look at an IKEA kitchen day after day.

When my friend was on one of her psychotic, she bought lots of designer replicas from Camden Market! As well as the real thing from Harrods/Selfridges.

I always assumed a lot of that was product placement stuff.

Wasn't there a MN thread about LJ letting a loan horse die of neglect?

She's not a great animal owner as I read a column ages ago where her completely untrained dogs ripped apart 2 of her own cats!

This is appalling to read about.
The horse and the poor cats.
Horses need a great deal of care, especially elderly ones who may be in pain from arthritis or ulcers or whatever.
To have dogs that are so untrustworthy that they rip cats apart is beyond stupid and cruel.

Sadly, it sounds like “ Animal
hoarding” rather than animal care.
My son’s GF has a cat, I have a dog and the introductions are taking place very gradually so neither animal is stressed or hurt.
Animal hoarders tend to amass animals and can’t care for them properly - EG allowing them to be hurt by others in their so called “ Care”.

Habreathmint · 16/11/2022 01:17

She a compulsive liar and fantasist who depressingly earns £250k a year. The rockstar boyfriend probably was invented. Jim Kerr threatened her with legal action so it's not him!

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/11/2022 09:08

She's profoundly unwell and deserves sympathy IMHO. The Daily Mail and others are exploiting this in a most dreadful way and the best thing to do is not to look.

I agree with this. I feel both sad and slightly embarrassed for her.

RosettaStormer · 16/11/2022 05:12

Her life has always been an absolute car crash. I think she manufactures crises to gain attention quite frankly. Not consciously necessarily. Makes incredibly stupid decisions in every area of her life and completely lacks empathy for others.

She sounds like a total narc. I'm guessing that as she's set herself up as a 'confessional journalist' the need to fabricate drama would be quite compelling. Nevertheless, she comes across as an awful person. I think the fact that she started her career in fashion journalism but has been banned from most fashion shows (according to her wiki) is very telling.

I’d love to let a psychiatrist loose on this one. NPD, BPD or bipolar? She’s definitely not mentally well, some form of ND and oddly willing to let herself and those close to her get exploited for personal gain. If she was working class, Adult Services would be all over her.

Thank goodness there are no kids involved.

Easby is an idyllic village in the heart of Richmondshire but its historic abbey and ancient church are under threat as planning permission for 12 log cabins awaits decision by the council.

Proper nimbies!!

I'm not sure how 12 log cabins threatens the Abbey and the church....unless they are being knocked down to make space for them? (Which I'm pretty sure wasn't the plan!)

I also don’t really understand how she became bankrupt and I do read her column. She has admitted before that she spends money for psychological reasons

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1225842/LIZ-JONES-I-spend-money-hole-soul--Im-150-000-debt.html

But surely she must have had an accountant? How can you just not pay your taxes?

Even people who don’t like her read her column avidly because they love being nasty about her. Especially on tattle life. Some posts here read remarkably similar!

Yes some people love putting her down and read for that.

I think a lot of us identify with her. Insecurities, mental health issues, bad dates, dreaming of a better life, rescues animals. I do like her but as pp said there is also an element of not being able to look away.

Also she has periods of success, owned a big house, won a writing award etc so that gives you hope as a reader that yes we too could have some success.

Overall she’s a complex person and I think her readership is an equally complex mix.

CosmopolitanPlease · 17/11/2022 10:29

I think people read her to feel comforted and reassured in their purchasing choices, because despite spunking a fortune on cosmetic treatments, hair dressers, oily baths and dieting constantly for most of her life she still looks bloody awful. Ditto her lifestyle choices- throwing thousands at designer names and holidays has arguably left her more unhappy than if she hadn't.

peaceandove · 17/11/2022 11:41

It's no wonder her landlord has decided to sell the property now that Liz has spent £59K of her own money kindly refurbishing it for him.

She's an idiot.

ChicCroissant · 17/11/2022 12:10

I read her latest column online - it hadn't changed from the last one I read years ago, and yes - she still mentioned that bloody bed and she doesn't even have it any more! Her own worst enemy.

BronwenFrideswide · 17/11/2022 16:31

I also don’t really understand how she became bankrupt

@Diverging in one of her column about her time in Somerset Liz said she was spending a minimum of £1500 a month on vet bills alone for her horses. Add to that all the rest of the stuff animals require - food etc. Unsustainable on her income especially when that income has also got to service all her own wants as well.

Animals cost cold hard cash and lots of it and Liz had lots of animals, Liz wanted to be/run some kind of animal saviour service and reality bit.

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/11/2022 19:36

You can't understand how someone who cashed in her pension to spend £59k on someone else's house became bankrupt?

Diverging · 20/11/2022 09:20

I suppose so. I just would have thought spending money each month that she didn’t have would be stopped by the bank or whoever before it went that far and as she’s earning (presumably reasonably decent) money would then pay it off.
I’ve never been in debt (fortunately).
I can understand how someone can go bankrupt by their business failing and they lose a large amount at once.

On the latest podcast she refers again to an anonymous female film star offering to help her buy the cottage. I wonder who would do that. If it’s true. But that would be an odd thing to make up!
