Liz Jones - I do feel a tiny bit sorry for her but she still has no self awareness

Article in the DM today about how she's getting evicted from her rental cottage as the landlady wants to sell. Focus of the article is renters with no security - which I agree is an issue.

So she talks about how when she was made bankrupt she struggled to find somewhere to rent. Had to put all her nice furniture in storage. She has spent 59k "decorating" this cottage - new kitchen, underfloor heating, etc and has now lost all that.

I'm sorry but 59k would be a 50% on a 2 bed terrace in many cities in the UK. I don't know maybe she couldn't get a mortgage for the rest. Though surely she didn't spend all her savings on this cottage. And how did she have 59k if she was made bankrupt a few years ago?

Anyway the thing which really bugged me is she says women of her age have had it harder than "generation rent". Really? Had it harder when she had the opportunity to buy property (and did so) when it was a quarter of the price it is now. She spent years writing about her luxury lifestyle, her horses, trips to Paris, expensive skincare, expensive yoga classes.

I have limited sympathy for someone who has spunked a very good income on frivolous shit and moans about being skint especially when they continue to make shit financial decisions.

Still wish I knew who the Rock Star was. Was Jim Kerr the most likely suspect?

Oops sorry, just saw it was Richmond, Yorkshire. My bad!

In Richmond, Surrey? You're kidding. There's hardly anything at less than £1200 for a two bedroom flat, let alone a two bedroom house. If you're in central Richmond, as opposed to Twickenham, Whitton, Hounslow etc you're looking at £2000 plus.

I think it’s Richmond in Yorkshire , although I did a double take when I read it too!

mateysmum · 14/11/2022 08:19

Don't feel sorry for her at all. She is where she is because for years she has been making foolish and frankly irrational decisions. Did she not realise she had no security of tenure when she splashed £59K"!!!!!! on somebody else's property. That's more than many people spend on their own property in a lifetime. In the end the landlord will have come out of this ahead but most would never allow a tenant to change a home in this way. That money could have gone a long way to funding a deposit.
She is a very silly woman.

All you need to know about her -

Very poor financial management, it’s hard to feel sympathy when someone is foolish, why would anyone think it wise to spend so much money improving someone else’s asset.

thelobsterquadrille · 14/11/2022 08:23

It's pretty clearly she has some serious mental health difficulties.

While I appreciate she's frustrating I do feel sorry for her.

ASMRTingles · 14/11/2022 08:27

I thought you couldn’t make big/permanent changes to a rental property? Or do you just need to ask permission?

NyanBinaryJohn · 14/11/2022 08:28

I distinctly remember her "trying" to live on benefits for a week for the sake of an article (at least a decade ago) and she blew through the money in a day or so. Her lack of truly trying and general attitude really angered me.

I can't find that particular article, but I can find the one she wrote detailing her spending habits.

And now she spent 60k on someone else's property, despite warnings and knowing it's stupid.

Can't say I feel sorry for her.

Sparkletastic · 14/11/2022 08:28

She's a fantasist and I strongly suspect RS boyfriend was all made up. She heavily implied it was JK then suddenly stopped mentioning him. He may well have sent her a Cease and Desist letter.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/11/2022 08:30

Bet the landlord can’t believe their luck!

BaddogGooddoggy · 14/11/2022 08:36

Who? Daily Mail, seriously?

hesbeingabitofadick · 14/11/2022 08:37

This. And then some.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/11/2022 08:39

She lived on Exmoor once, wrote terrible things (fictional) about her neighbours. They all hated her, because of what she wrote. She made up so much shit about her life and how miserable she was. She’s totally mad.

Pinniepot · 14/11/2022 08:39

I think it's obvious that she's mentally ill and has made many poor decisions. I blame Daily Mail really for encouraging her and propping her up and probably egging her on to do more and more stupid things so she can write about them.

Charlieiscool · 14/11/2022 08:41

The landlord is benefitting from the kitchen yes, but all those animals will have caused a great deal of damage e.g. scratching doors and shitting everywhere. She often talks lovingly about them chewing her designer shoes and the buttons on jackets that she pays an outrageous amount for.

LakieLady · 14/11/2022 08:42

She's absolutely barking and I don't feel sorry for her in the slightest.

3peassuit · 14/11/2022 08:42

I can’t imagine spending £60,000 on a property I was renting. The landlady must be delighted.

WelliesandWine88 · 14/11/2022 08:44

I'm embarrassed for her 🙈

Byfleet · 14/11/2022 08:45

@uggmum
No way are there two bedroom cottages to rent in Richmond for £800pm !

DooNotAsISay · 14/11/2022 08:46

What an unpleasant woman. ‘dear God, how do these people get to own property?’. What a nasty, snobbish thing to say.

As for her ‘one’ luxury of a hot bath. She seems to thing she has a good-given right to EVERY luxury.

horrid woman.

Choconut · 14/11/2022 08:46

Needmorelego · 14/11/2022 07:58

I feel sorry for her sometimes. She has spoken in the past about her eating disorder but I think she has some type of financial disorder too. She really has no clue financially. The way she speaks about people and acts I think she might be autistic too.
She needs some real help.

Yes I have also wondered if she was autistic when I used to read her columns.

Byfleet · 14/11/2022 08:47

Ah a Liz Jones thread. It makes me nostalgic for MN in the old days.

UnderHisPie · 14/11/2022 08:48

The whole article reads like one long list of the worst possible financial decisions someone can make.

On the plus side, I hadn't realised Neptune kitchens were so cheap Grin

Musti · 14/11/2022 08:48

She obviously has mental health issues but one of my closest friends will not buy a house despite me advising her to do so for years. She’s in her 50s and had always had a decent income and had she bought and paid what she has paid in rent over the years she would be mortgage free now and have a great asset.

I don’t understand her reasoning but she never wanted to be tied down - I did tell her she could sell or rent.
