Do you treat yourself on pay-day?

We were chatting in the office today and a few of my work pals were talking about the things they'd ordered on payday / what's arrived

Shoes, make-up, headphones, books...

I feel like I've ot bought myself anything in ages (not goady - I'm not rich but not skint. Both have decent ish jobs and we live in a cheap area of the North east so low mortgage etc)

I was definitely the odd one out at not pay day splurging! I mean I'm browsing now but nothing has caught me eye!

I get my nails done every payday. And might get a new top or lipstick or something like that.

Doublevision5 · 04/11/2022 22:42

No I don't. I'm not really a big spender, I don't splurge on things for myself. I could afford to buy more things if I wanted (not rich but have some disposable income) but I just don't feel the need to, unless there's something I need?

I do buy things obviously, clothes and stuff, but more on need basis. Not just because it's payday.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/11/2022 22:46

No, I might have done when I was younger.. don’t remember (SO old)

TravellingSpoon · 04/11/2022 22:50

I'm my house, payday is payout day.🙁

However I normally order a couple of second hand books on ebay on payday.

Cuddlywuddlies · 04/11/2022 22:53

Not on payday no, I treat myself whenever I want (any stage of the month!)

TheTeddyBears · 04/11/2022 22:57

No I imagine it's the sort of thing that folk do when they are younger. Spend all their money then have money so when pay day comes they treat themselves. I just buy what I want when I want (within resin) therefore no need for a pay day treat.

Even when I worked at places and got a few grand bonus I didn't always do it. Sometimes I wld get myself something nice and out the rest away for home improvements/holiday.

I don't even recognise when pay day is 😂 it goes in and goes straight back out again pretty much.

EstellaRijnveld · 04/11/2022 23:07

I haven't for a long time because I wasn't earning much but I wish I had. I'm starting a new job soon & have had to splurge out on work clothes. I've been wfh in pyjamas since the start of covid & don't have anything appropriate to wear. So it's costing me a bit to buy a work wardrobe in one go.

Note to self - buy two items of smart casual clothes each month to make it cheaper in the long run.

SirenSays · 04/11/2022 23:08

Only a midnight takeaway

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/11/2022 23:09

We don't have takeaways very frequently, but do usually have one on payday weekend as a treat.

Workyticket · 04/11/2022 23:10

None of us are particularly young - late 30s to early 50s. All with houses/ kids etc

I'm rubbish at spending on myself - I always feel a bit guilty!

No, it's not anything I've ever done. Not specifically because it is pay day.

I treat myself (if I can afford it) because I see something I fancy, or have an urge for something, or see tickets for something I'd like, or get invited to something, not because it is a particular date of the month.
That was the same when we lived pay day to payday too. I am not saying "I buy what I want whenever I want it". Quite the contrary, when we were skint, a 'treat' would have been less likely, pay day or not.

GreenLunchBox · 04/11/2022 23:13

No, because I don't live paycheck to paycheck

MrsAlexander · 04/11/2022 23:14

Just as @GreenLunchBox said - I think when you have savings you don't need to splurge on payday as you had the money there before it IF you wanted to buy something.

NoSquirrels · 04/11/2022 23:19

I’m the opposite- more likely to buy something later in the month, when I’m reasonably sure I won’t need to pay out anything unexpected. That’s from my own purely discretionary money - most of it’s in the joint account as soon as I get paid!

mrsfollowill · 04/11/2022 23:28

I used to when I was a teen- I worked full time but lived with mum and dad so every pay day me and my best mate (we worked together) always went mad and went to Pizza Hut for lunch! Also went to Boots and bough new makeup. That was it but it made us feel very decadent at the time.
We did clothes shopping on a Saturday though- off to town to buy an outfit to go out in that night so probably bought new clothes every other week? Then I moved out from mum and dads and my money was needed for bills! I'm old now 50+ - to be fair I treat myself a lot - and not just on pay day Grin

Aintnosupermum · 04/11/2022 23:31

The irony of spending is that when I had no money I bought myself treats frequently but now I’m financially secure, I spend far less on myself and in general.

AlwaysWalkingOnEggshells · 04/11/2022 23:37

Yes, I deserve a treat on payday after working all month to earn it. I also deserve a treat if I've had a particularly good day at work. And if I've had a bad day then I need a treat to cheer me up. Also Fridays because thank fuck it's Friday. And at the weekend, because it's the weekend. And some days I deserve a treat just for getting out of bed.

I'm not rich enough for all that though so it's usually just a little treat like a chocolate biscuit with my tea or painting my nails or binging the next few episodes of whatever I'm currently watching.

SweetSakura · 04/11/2022 23:46

Not on payday as such but I do treat myself. We have plenty of disposable income and what I spend on myself is a fraction of what I spend on the children's hobbies /fun/clothes etc, but I'm not a martyr. I prefer spending money on activities (trips to the theatre, day trips) but i do have a monthly book subscription box and I also like to buy 2nd hand books, bath oils, and other little bits

housemaus · 04/11/2022 23:49

I usually (but not always) buy myself a record on payday! And a nice lunch - nothing posh, just lunch from somewhere rather than made at home.

FourEyesGood · 04/11/2022 23:58

Nope. Boringly, I transfer any leftover money from my current adult into a separate savings account the day before payday. Sometimes it’s £8; sometimes it’s £180. It all adds up over the year.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 04/11/2022 23:59

We normally have something nice to eat. It used to be fish and chips but now I buy Aldi beer battered haddock instead. We had cake and hot chocolate as a payday treat last week.

alexdgr8 · 05/11/2022 00:03

no i never did that, nor would want to.
i aimed to use as little as possible of my pay.
just as well, now that i don't have a job, and only £70 a week, as i have to live on my savings.

meatballsoup · 05/11/2022 00:16

I don't drink generally but every 2nd Friday its payday & I buy a 6 pack of Corona. It goes down very well after a hard week's work.

mondaytosunday · 05/11/2022 00:24

No but my minimum wage teenage son does. He gets pretty low on funds the week leading up to it so has when he gets paid he treats himself to a steak or takeaway (he doesn't live with me). Occasionally a shirt or similiar.

IntentionalError · 05/11/2022 00:25

I usually treat myself to a nice bottle of red wine on the Friday night after payday. Something like a Châteauneuf du Pape, or maybe a bottle of champagne to enjoy with fish & chips.
