Do you treat yourself on pay-day?

We were chatting in the office today and a few of my work pals were talking about the things they'd ordered on payday / what's arrived

Shoes, make-up, headphones, books...

I feel like I've ot bought myself anything in ages (not goady - I'm not rich but not skint. Both have decent ish jobs and we live in a cheap area of the North east so low mortgage etc)

I was definitely the odd one out at not pay day splurging! I mean I'm browsing now but nothing has caught me eye!

Depends.

Some months I buy clothes.l on payday.

This month no, because I’ve got a couple of family birthdays to buy presents and contribute to meals out for, and we needed some new household stuff (warmer duvets, new pillows et ), so I’m not going to have much disposable income. It’ll be the same next month because of Christmas.

I’ll treat myself to some make up and perfume in January in the sales.

When I was young, free and single I pissed half my salary away on treats for myself on payday 😆

I've always found this approach odd. To me the money that is available to spend is what is left the day before the next pay day. On pay day itself you have no idea if the car will need a new tyre or the boiler will need repaired.

I think thinking you have money at the beginning of the cycle is what puts so many a pay cheque away from disaster.

And yes, I know having anything left at the moment is tough for everyone but I think this is a fundamental flaw in an approach to money that makes life harder for many, many people.

Agree. Around 10 years ago when everything was very affordable for me I used to treat myself. If you have savings and know you can afford it then crack on. If you don't have much money (like me now) I don't treat myself on payday because I don't know what I may need that money for. At the end of the month anything I have left gets put into savings. Will occasionally treat myself to a takeaway if I have friends coming over.

MissPiggysPinkDress · 05/11/2022 08:47

I used to, but now we are a saving to move, so I am getting a bit addicted to adding to my savings. I do like to go to a little craft shop though and buy a few balls of yarn, or some fabric though every now and again

girlmom21 · 05/11/2022 08:59

I like to wait until all of my bills have gone out... then normally spend everything else on the kids Grin unless there's something that's caught my eye and I've fancied for a while. Then I'll buy it once the bills have gone out just in case anything strange happens with them.

Jellywobblescobbles · 05/11/2022 09:03

Yes, I went out and had a few cocktails last night with a friend. I allow myself a takeaway too. The rest of the month I have to be careful especially at this time of year coming up to Christmas

ilikesscience · 05/11/2022 09:03

I normally don’t even know when payday is most of the time.
I’d be more likely to be a day before payday splurger if I had spare cash from the previous month though. Splurging when I have the whole month ahead to cover would mean I’d just be worried all month!

runjy · 05/11/2022 09:04

Ive worked in retail & in times of economic strife you see a much bigger spike in spending/footfall around payday.

runjy · 05/11/2022 09:06

I'm rubbish at spending on myself - I always feel a bit guilty!

I have zero guilt about spending on myself, if you can afford it why worry?

RewildingAmbridge · 05/11/2022 09:07

I treat myself whenever (within reason) I have personal spends money each month sometimes I spend it often I don't , so it goes into an account for when I want something. I don't really get to the point where I'm skint until payday (DH does and we have the same personal spends) , I think it's those who do then think I'll wait until pay day then get myself xyz

LimeCheesecake · 05/11/2022 09:09

I’m like @NoSquirrels - I’m the end of the month spender ! If it’s the week before payday and I haven’t spent my “fun money” budget, then I’ll treat myself to something. (A style and beauty thread has made me find a new dress that will be my target for a treat this month if I’ve still got fun money left !)

eurochick · 05/11/2022 09:13

I've never done a payday splurge. When I was younger with fewer commitments I did shop for myself quite regularly. Now I have a small person and a high maintenance house that together seem to drain my bank account. I also find I have most of what I want these days.

dudsville · 05/11/2022 09:17

I've never been a treat kind of person. I was always a little thrown when someone would say to me "you deserve a treat". Maybe it wasn't how i was raised but i just don't connect with the concept at all. I buy what I want after prioritising saving for my retirement. My retirement plan is my reward, paying off my mortgage, etc.

Workyticket · 05/11/2022 09:18

I can't believe the amount of people who don't know when payday is!

onlythreenow · 05/11/2022 09:22

I certainly know when payday is - I get paid fortnightly - but I've never treated myself just because it's payday. The majority of things I buy as a treat go on my credit card, so I can buy them at any time and just pay when payment is due.

Notepadfrog · 05/11/2022 09:24

No I buy everything on my credit card and pay the balance off on payday, I might get us all a takeaway on the weekend after payday but in reality I’m not really paying for that until next payday.

Some people don’t have a fixed payday. I get paid last Thursday of the month so have to look it up every time.DD all set up for the 10th so I can sort any issues with out being late. Makes no real difference to know I’m being paid on X and checking on the 1st it’s gone through financially.

AhaLynn · 05/11/2022 09:37

No I’m not a dog that needs treats after everything

ChuggingtonMum · 05/11/2022 09:37

I get paid on X day unless it's a Saturday or Tuesday in which case its the day before or a Sunday in which case it's the day after. That's why I can't keep track!

I too am a day before payday treater if there's anything left in my account.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 05/11/2022 09:39

I used to when I was younger and always had too much month at the end of my money! But now we have a decent amount of savings and better salaries so if I want something I don't have to wait until payday to treat myself.

But if you didn't treat yourself on payday, you wouldn't have to be careful the rest of the month? You could have a takeaway on a different day instead. What makes payday so special?

I've never really understood the payday thing. Even when I was living paycheck to paycheck, I wouldn't see payday as some special day to go out. If I could only afford to go out one day a month I'd rather save the money and go out on a day of my choosing!

Shitfather · 05/11/2022 10:38

Not every pay day, no. I will buy things when I need them, but will always search on outlets and find discount vouchers. I’ve saved a shit load of money that way.

Calandor · 05/11/2022 11:42

No I buy things when I see them if I have the money. If I don't I usually forget I wanted them by payday 😂

Last night was a night of myself and my friends choosing. We often wait until after pay day to meet up. We don’t earn large salaries.

MuggleMe · 05/11/2022 14:18

I buy when I want to (rarely), rather than at payday.

micedontpaint · 05/11/2022 15:30

Yes I do. I like to enjoy life. I want to enjoy every single day. I treat myself and daughter and/or friend and/or parent to a meal out a month. I treat my husband to a takeaway (he pays all the bills), I stock up on my skincare and beauty products including vitamins, and I do a luxury food shop (husband pays the food bill) which includes superfluous items such as processed foods so we can have a cheese and wine night.

What's life without enjoyment?
