Do you treat yourself on pay-day?

We were chatting in the office today and a few of my work pals were talking about the things they'd ordered on payday / what's arrived

Shoes, make-up, headphones, books...

I feel like I've ot bought myself anything in ages (not goady - I'm not rich but not skint. Both have decent ish jobs and we live in a cheap area of the North east so low mortgage etc)

I was definitely the odd one out at not pay day splurging! I mean I'm browsing now but nothing has caught me eye!

Technically it should be "paying yourself first" by putting money into savings..

I don't have any money to treat myself with.
But I do put money into savings and elsewhere.

Things like the odd take away are already accounted for

Yes
Every pay day I buy a new lipstick,a new book and new shoes:/boots

How often do you get paid?

Surely you're not buying a new lipstick and footwear every month?

You must have loads already.

Big bills come out monthly normally so it’s fairly normal I’ve been paid weekly and needed to be strict with myself about putting money away every payday

But are all the big bills due for payment at the same time each month? They certainly aren't here. I get paid fortnightly, and budget for different bills being paid each fortnight, and my rent is also paid fortnightly. The only person I've known who was paid monthly hated it.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/11/2022 05:04

Are you in the UK @onlythreenow ?

Most people here are paid monthly and bills for housing, utilities etc are mostly monthly so it makes sense, rather than being an inconvenience.

But even if you are paid other than monthly there are various methods of managing cash flow unless you are genuinely short of the income needed to cover the essentials.

Again, it's often about getting away from the 'must spend because it's payday' mindset.

No, I'm in NZ. Most bills here are paid monthly also, but they fall due at different times of the month. I suppose if monthly pay is what you are used to then you deal with it, but I wouldn't like it. I actually prefer weekly pay, but I'm used to fortnightly. Monthly pay is not common here.

I don't because I am not interested to buying more stuff and can't be bothered. But I imagine if you enjoy choosing stuff and can afford it why not. People spend money in all sorts of ways. We do need people to be buying things to keep the economy going.

good grief - people can buy what they want when they want! Who are you to try and be a financial advisor on here? Stop with the preaching

Actually I do sometimes have to think about the nicer things my money will buy in life generally if I'm having a rubbish time at work ,that's the same thing really.

I'm more likely to get a takeaway, on the day I get paid, even though the money is there at any other time of the month. It feels more OK to spend out on a takeaway when money's just come into my account for some reason.
