How the upper middle class live

Apologies for yet another class thread but I find this fascinating. Off the back of a thread I started watching a TV series about British aristos and their stately homes. This lead to other YouTube videos and a podcast.
Some observations I made:

  1. The women all have great bone structure with the infamous MN UMC swooshy hair.
  1. A lot of "sleepless nights" and hand wringing about how they can maintain their homes, which they are "custodians" of. Many have had to do tours/homemade jams/souvenirs to try to bring in extra money. But, their dc go to private schools - surely the first thing you'd do is remove them from that to save money or get rid of the ponies?
  1. Re decor, lots of chintz like you'd expect in lovely formal rooms but their kitchens look like something Kim and Aggie need to tackle. Clutter covering all available workspace, books, riding gear, pet bowls etc, lots of knick knacks. Someone on another thread stated that the 'clutter free' movement is a class thing, with it being a LMC to working class thing. Not sure if this is true but interesting all the same.

I don't know anyone who is truly UMC as in old money or landed gentry types. For those who are acquainted, what are they like and how do they live?

It was a tong-in-cheek comment @Aleaiactaest I obviously overshot it😊

I know, so sorry @Cam22 , that was appalling, I apologise. You are right of course, thank you for correcting me, this is how I learn. I have so much learning to do and I am so grateful to posters like you who care enough to point out when I'm wrong. I will get better and your efforts are not wasted, thank you so much!

Excellent.

Cam22 · 09/11/2022 14:56

As you say there is still work to be done.

SleeplessinSouthwold · 09/11/2022 15:27

I know. I don't even have the second language excuse now because I've lived in the UK for too long. No excuses! Sorry! 😳Thank you! Quick look around MN; you must be so busy! @Cam22 and that's just one website!

Huh?

So, would you say the dies are cast as soon as you marry then @Aleaiactaest ?

( As an aside, unrelated; the best marriage advice I've heard to date remains "Just don't marry a nutter".)

I always feel the royal family are the big losers of the Upper Upper Uppers.
All the toys, but, all the responsibilities, all eyes on them, all the time and no time, almost no private life. Everyone else in their world has it a lot easier.

A bit like Kate & Pippa, both married millionaires with multiple homes, would choose Pippa's life any day! I know it's controversial but I believe Kate & Pippa have been groomed for the UC since birth! Wonder how Carole did her homework without mumsnet 🤔

SleeplessinSouthwold · 09/11/2022 17:24

Yep, Pippa's life is a lot easier. I think Kate has probably exceeded Carole's expectations by quite shot. I don't think they were groomed to aim for UC from birth, but rather that things progressed as the Midleton's lives progressed.

Huh?

If words fail you, I wouldn't offended at all if you re-rewrote all my posts using correct grammar and punctuation. I see a fee mistakes in my PP 👀Again!

That's a good way of looking at it @SleeplessinSouthwold but Kate's boyfriend before Wills Rupert Finch was very umc, he went on to marry the beautiful aristo Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs & he's a high flying London barrister... Kate would never have settled for a normal Joe....

What a fascinating family- said seriously. Sound great fun- said from someone in City law and DH similar.

The upper middle class are the real winners. Loads of cash and no crumbling estate or other tedious responsibilities.

Agree with this!

Has anyone on here classified Uncle Gazza of the Costas yet? Will he get an invite to the Coronation?
