On my own at home after a bad week. And I know that in the end the surgery doesn't work and he dies.

And watching him and Elizabeth I'm just weeping.

Bloody loved ER, I had started rewatching it and then got distracted and forgot about it. I'm going back. Lucy and carter was traumatising

Oh man. As soon as they said man hit by train I knew that it was Dennis Gant. I've never cried so much. I think I was about 15 at the time and that episode haunts me still.

Me too. That episode nearly broke me in two.

beautifully done. I absolutely loved ER.

Mary46 · 02/11/2022 08:48

Op loved it too. Very sad. I was reading in a mag George Clooney still sees him years later. Lovely

It must have been 15 years since I last watched ER but reading this thread brought a tear to my eye remembering Mark dying.

Well it sounds like you are committed so maybe you can make a change, keep focused and let this be the decade you really focus on your ER watching. Have you been wasting time with studying, exams, jobs, partners, family members, kids and friends up to now?

Yes I’ve definitely been slacking. Can’t believe it really!

@ReedOfFate it’s on All4, every series (I think).

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 02/11/2022 15:02

I feel invigorated. I know I started rewatching it a couple of years ago now and got up to series 4 episode 8 (I just checked I hadn’t committed that to memory lol!) so I’m going to crack on later.

diddl · 02/11/2022 16:47

That was a great show.

15 series!

Hadn't realised that it had gone on for so long.

The letter from Mark...

Thank you - yes all series there and I’m going in!

I LOVE ER too. Watched it live originally, then had the whole lot on DVD and rewatched it all while BF my eldest (now aged 16!). Now rewatching it with said 16 year old. I love the early series most, especially Doug and Carole, Mark (sob) and Carter and Lucy. We're now up to series 13.

What's funny is how much I forgot despite watching it several times. So I still got surprised by stuff (like I didn't get a sense of foreboding when I saw the birthday cake knife). Some stuff stuck in my head forever though like Romano getting his arm chopped by the chopper. I know he was an arsehole but I felt sorry for him by the end too.

Donnaslayer · 02/11/2022 20:59

Watched ER when when it aired 1st time around. Loved them but never seen them since but yes I remember what happened to Mark like it was yesterday. 1st time I'd ever heard the rendition of somewhere over the rainbow. Its my favourite version and to this day makes me always remember Mark 💕

It’s funny you say that, those eps are some of my favourite. I had watched them at least twice before remembering it happens round Valentine’s Day and the knife is there for a cake. Also definitely didn’t appreciate the nuances of WHY it happened when I was a kid watching!

Romano gets his arm off a lot later than I remember as well. I didn’t really watch as much after all the originals had left. I must make an effort now as I’m sure I’m missing a lot.

JuneOsborne · 03/11/2022 09:16

I was dating my husband when ER was airing for the first time. He used to have to come to mine well before 9 or after 10 on a Wednesday. Never between 9 and 10.

Hello Dr Green as Rachael walks in to the ER. sobbing.

Gazelda · 03/11/2022 09:39

Am I mis-remembering, or was Friends on directly before ER? I know there was one weekday where everyone I knew was at home in front if they TV and uncontactable, followed by water-cooler chats the next morning.

Having said that, I'm now thinking Friends might have been Friday nights?

MoiraRosefan · 03/11/2022 10:04

If you loved ER, try The Night Shift on Netflix. About an ER dept in Texas. Not as many seasons as ER but I loved it. (Also a huge ER fan)

OneFrenchEgg · 03/11/2022 12:48

Ah so many hospital dramas I used to love

St Elsewhere
The Green Wing
House
Scrubs
MASH
Holly City
ER

Never Greys Anatomy or Casualty though.

Queenmarie · 03/11/2022 14:16

I'm late 30s and shock horror never watched ER, but this thread is making me feel like I've missed out...

Is it now horribly dated? And with so many seasons, does the quality dip in the latter half?

For point of reference, my all-time favourite series are:

Buffy
Firefly
The Americans
Breaking Bad
The Handmaid's Tale
The Vampire Diaries

Wonder if it's still possible to watch it anywhere?

OneFrenchEgg · 03/11/2022 14:30

It's often running at one of the channels at the bottom of my Virgin guide but I don't think on any streaming services

poshme · 03/11/2022 14:31

@OneFrenchEgg it's on all4

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 03/11/2022 16:07

@Queenmarie

oh please watch it. You are going to love it. I promise. And I rarely promise anything because I know life throws spanners in the works 🤣

I am not sure re the dated thing but I reckon you will get so engrossed in the stories and the staff’s lives you won’t care. It’s a fab bit of telly

Mary46 · 03/11/2022 16:35

Was so sad. I watched it on you tube. I have lovely memories of ER.

FourTeaFallOut · 03/11/2022 16:54

Urgh, this episode. Twenty odd years ago, before we got married, DH came home from work and saw our flatmate sat in front of the telly bawling her eyes out and he came upstairs to our room to tell me that she was upset to find me watching telly and bawling my eyes out on the bed. Mark Green kicking the bucket was a dark day 😁

toomuchlaundry · 03/11/2022 17:54

It is interesting to see the attitudes to AIDS in the earlier series. I started to watch it all again on All4 and I don't think it is dated (the effects might not be as spectacular as they might be if filmed today) You might want to avoid helicopters after watching!

I would love to watch MASH again, that was one of my all time favourite programmes

Ha ha, okay I will give it a go. I do need a new series to obsess over. If it's got a generally good script, believable characters and a flawed hero or two, I will hopefully be hooked.

As long as it's not too schmaltzy...
