Inspired by the Come From Away thread, thought it would be nice to have a thread about musicals in general.

Favourites? Least favourites?

Oh yes loved Six too.

FeralWitch · 26/10/2022 22:01

Love The Book of Mormon and Les Mis. Adored Hairspray, too.

Absolutely hated Phantom. Non-stop cringe throughout.

OrangeBananaFish · 26/10/2022 22:01

I've only seen Six in the theatre. Loved it, Have tickets to see it again in July. Seems so far away. Also have tickets to see the Lion King early next year.

Really need to see more. Its just the cost and the fact I have had no-one to go with in the past.

Musicals I really want to see are Phantom and Wicked. I have watched the 25th anniversary of Phantom filmed at The Royal Albert Hall which I loved, but really must watch it live.

TheOGCCL · 26/10/2022 22:02

I liked The Sound of Music, the Wizard of Oz and Saturday Night Fever all at the London Palladium. Also 42nd Street at Drury Lane (with the now Princess of Wales and Adam Garcia in the audience).

The musical I've seen the most is Jersey Boys.

On film I like Mary Poppins and Grease and Bugsy Malone (stage productions I've seen just haven't come close).

FeralWitch · 26/10/2022 22:02

Oh, and I saw Cabaret with Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley this year, and it was outstanding.

Eddie Redmayne kissed my hand!

Whizzi24 · 26/10/2022 22:03

Cats is the worst musical.

Scrumbleton · 26/10/2022 22:05

I generally don't like musicals though Cabaret was superb and loved Once which I saw some years ago. Hated Miss Saigon and left half Evita at the intermission

Some of the old musicals are fabulous, South Pacific, The King and I in particular, they always have me in tears when I watch the films.

This in spades. I love a musical, especially the old Hollywood ones. Carousel and The King and I always make me cry too.

on stage I love Les Mis, and loved Sunset Boulevard and Hairspray. also loved the recent production of My Fair Lady.

I want to see Six and also Hamilton.

Bobshhh · 26/10/2022 22:07

Joseph has the biggest place in my heart, I saw it in the Jason Donovan era and I just adore it.

I also love grease the film but didn't particularly like the stage show.

Hairspray and phantom and les mis and m
Mamma Mia are also up there.

I was not a fan of wicked and still need to see Hamilton.

FeralWitch · 26/10/2022 22:08

I enjoyed Hamilton a lot more than I thought I would.

Pearfacebanana · 26/10/2022 22:08

Fame!

Aladdin.

Frozen.

Can't wait to see Back to the Future.

FlirtyMelons · 26/10/2022 22:09

Yes Carousel is lovely also, I have enjoyed most musicals I've seen over the years, some more unusual ones are Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Kiss Me Kate, also the film version of High Society is great.

I can't admit publicly how much I used to love Summer Holiday the film 😂

purser25 · 26/10/2022 22:09

Just love musicals. Often they are deeper than you think. Loved Billy Elliot lots of Rogers and Hammerstein fiddler on the roof so sad and at the end when they were talking about where they were going to you thought how sad. Can’t wait to be able to go to the theatre again soon.

Pearfacebanana · 26/10/2022 22:10

Oh and Jersey Boys - just phenomenal. Even my husband loves it.

heymammy · 26/10/2022 22:11

I loved the Lion King, Matilda and Evita but my all time favourite is Tommy from c1996 I think.

Very much enjoyed Six, I've seen it twice with each of my teens but wouldn't go just for me.

Didn't love Phantom or Miss Saigon.

Desperately want to see Sunshine on Leith (10yr old ds loves the film and soundtrack), Hamilton and DEH. I'd actually really like to see The Greatest Showman on the stage Blush

Rainallnight · 26/10/2022 22:12

Cabaret. Started watching it when I was 14 on VHS, have seen it countless times since.

LizzieSiddal · 26/10/2022 22:13

I recently saw a new musical -Fishermans Friend's
It was fabulous and came out with a big grin on my face.

WhatICallMyUsername · 26/10/2022 22:15

Chicago, have seen it a few times as it seems to come to our local theatre a lot. Ditto Mamma Mia. Although Chicago has fond memories as we saw it on Broadway the night DH proposed!

We are supposed to be seeing Bugsy Malone on Saturday but tonight's performance was cancelled due to cast sickness so hoping it goes ahead as was DS birthday present! Lots of angry people on the post as they cancelled an hour before curtain up 🙁

hels71 · 26/10/2022 22:19

Also love a G and S!
other favourites are cats, West Side story, guys and dolls and fiddler.

watcherintherye · 26/10/2022 22:20

Guys and Dolls I love. Other favourites are West Side Story, My Fair Lady, 42nd Street and South Pacific.

Confuzzlediddled · 26/10/2022 22:21

This year I've seen waitress, book of Mormon, bonnie and Clyde, moulin rouge, come from away, &Juliet, dreamgirls, Hamilton and last weekend went to musical con, that was an experience!

Hbh17 · 26/10/2022 22:28

Hamilton, Come From Away, Guys & Dolls, Cabaret, Matilda, Company, The Producers - all totally fantastic.
Also like most other Sondheim musicals, Tick Tick Boom, Les Mis, Forty Second Street, West Side Story.
Not keen on jukebox shows, with the exception of the brilliant Five Guys Named Moe.
Couldn't bear Wicked - just nasal shrieking, with no proper tunes.
Also wasn't keen on Six - nice concept, but all a bit sub-Spice Girls (think I am the wrong demographic!).
