I have known my friend M since 1964.
The first day of infant school she was crying going up some steps with a teacher
I was crying going down the steps with another. Both teachers just got us to hold each others hand and that was the start of this long friendship. We now live over 100 miles from each other. Speak on the phone every couple of weeks.
We are maybe not as close as we were in school but we have both been beside each other through some pretty bad times.
That's a friendship of over 58 years have you got a friend you've known longer

53 years. She lived next door & was 2 when I was born.

my best friend 40 years we met at school

another 38 years.

one of my closest friends, we only met 16 months ago, but we became close very quickly & we WhatsApp a lot each day & meet up about once a week. I know her family well too. It's lovely

Quite a few in between, but they tend to come & go. As they say, some for a reason, some for a season.

make new friends,
but keep the old,
some are silver
some are gold.

frankly my bestie is a diamond! There is nothing she wouldn't do for me & me her. Without having to ask, she's just know

My oldest friend died aged 93 in 2019 when I was 59. I met him when I was 20 and lodged in their granny annex for 6 months. We were friends for 39 years; his wife pre-deceased him by 18 years. I was the dil who got away in their eyes.

The friend who has been my friend for the longest time I met when we were 11. She has been my friend for 51 years.

Georgeskitchen · 24/10/2022 22:12

58 years. Family moved in next door to us. X

GyozaGuiting · 24/10/2022 22:14

29 years- she’s an absolute gem, I can really be myself with her.

evilharpy · 24/10/2022 22:17

My oldest friend I think I've known since we were 4. We're not super close but we do chat fairly regularly.

My closest friends I've probably known since I was maybe 18, so about 24 years. They are like my sisters.

WillowintheUK · 24/10/2022 22:18

67 years.

RewildingAmbridge · 24/10/2022 22:21

Since birth, our grandfathers were best friends, my dad and his mum grew up together, and so did we. Same nursery class, primary and secondary classes, same sixth form. I went to uni and he didn't but friendship was pretty cemented by then. Our sons are now friends.

autienotnaughty · 24/10/2022 22:22

Since she was 3 days old (I'm 9 month older)

creamtelephone · 24/10/2022 22:24

45 years from infants school. Had about 6 years in the wilderness about 11 years ago due to us both being equally as stubborn which was a shame as we both had two children each/adopted in that time.
We could have been amazing support to each other during those times and I feel sad I didn't have her in my life when I was loosing my mind with my littlies.
But we both now accept the bits of each other that we don't like and just ignore them now. I wouldn't want us to fall out again as our children are all fabulously close and I'd miss her scatty, unreliable ways (although would be on time for a lot more things!)

elp30 · 24/10/2022 22:26

My cousins are my oldest friends :)

One I chose and who continues to choose me, I've known since 1978. Our birthdays are a day apart so we are now 52.

WaitinginVain · 24/10/2022 22:28

52 years, since (her) birth, she's younger by 3 months.
We grew up next door but one to each other.

MarloweMax · 24/10/2022 22:28

47 years since we met the summer before we started school (infant) and then we were placed in the same class.

We have always remained close friends although we have other 'circles' but she is like a member of the family. My parents treat her like a favourite niece. I love her very much.

Ragwort · 24/10/2022 22:30

I have two good friends that I met at nursery school - 60 years ago. My 90 year old mother is still friends with someone she met when they were both 20 - so 80 years !!

AriettyHomily · 24/10/2022 22:54

Since I was born, 45 years

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/10/2022 23:15

53 years
We met in reception at School
She went off to Uni, but returned to the area and still lives local to me, but in a different area

Kenwouldmixitup · 24/10/2022 23:21

48 years. Have lived 250 miles apart since we were 16 but speak at least once a week and text daily. Bloody love WhatsApp.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 24/10/2022 23:22

Since I was 3. So nearly my whole life. Nearly 40 years

amspeechless · 24/10/2022 23:23

I have a few good friends I have known for over thirty years a couple 40 years and my best friend for 51 years ! Am meeting her on Sunday for a nostalgic walk through our original village and lunch at the local pub .

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 24/10/2022 23:37

We became friends at 13, at secondary school. That was 33 years ago. We still act like 13 year olds sometimes.Grin

We don't live that far from each other, but both have busy lives so we don't meet up as often as we should.

Nat6999 · 25/10/2022 02:25

56 years, our dad's grew up together & our mums are friends, we have been friends all our lives. My mum was Godmother to her sister who died in a car crash age 5 that involved all the family, thankfully my friend & her mum & dad got out with nothing worse than a broken ankle, cuts & bruises. We have been through lots together, boyfriends, growing up, getting married, divorce, she lives miles away in Cornwall now but we still talk & message each other on Facebook.

Bloodybridget · 25/10/2022 02:30

63 years, we started primary school together just before my 5th birthday in 1959. But sadly, she has been affected by severe mental illness all her adult life, which has made it a complicated friendship.

DeeCeeCherry · 25/10/2022 02:30

47 years. Although Im closer with a friend Ive known for 38 years.
