What things do you have too much of?

I’ve recently been on a bit of a decluttering mission and have discovered things that I have a huge excess of and I’m trying to work my way through now (and not buy any more!)
I was thinking surely other people have those things that they buy every time they hit a shop even though they have 15 versions at home?

So mine are -
Candles
Herbal tea (so so many!)
Face masks
Childrens craft sets & supplies
Those seasoning in a bag things (like the Maggi ones)
And DH’s is baking supplies!

This winter I foresee lots of chicken dinners lit by candlelight followed by home baked cakes, I am determined to use up these things (why do I buy them and never use them?! Why?!!)

What are yours?

Childrens toys. They take up so much space and the kids barely play with them but I dont want to chuck them as I feel guilty- so I just look at them in the corner of the lounge with seething resentment when I'm trying to relax in the evening.

Also - notebooks, skincare / make up stuff - I barely wear make up yet have tons of it, cleaning sprays etc - I'm trying not to buy anymore until they're all used up. mugs! we have so many mugs and it's only me who has hot drinks!! obv we have guests but seriously, SO many mugs. Many of them novelty.

We really do just have a ton of shit in this house, I'd love to have the money to get rid of it all and start again.

Nearly everything.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 24/10/2022 11:40

Tupperware. Mugs. Jumpers.

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/10/2022 11:45

Dresses and jackets. Over the weekend I completely emptied my wardrobes because I have new clothes in the way and no hanging space to speak of. 256 dresses and 41 jackets. They range in age from brand new to bought twenty years ago, so it sort of crept up on me, and because I haven’t changed in weight of size since I was about 18 they all still fit so have never had the impetus to have a clear out. Had to finally admit it’s time for those I never wear any more to go off to pastures new via Vinted.

Pretty minimal on most of everything else, though. Although I think DH has too many old “just in case” duplicates of most of his stuff.

My other half is a bit of a hoarder so we have:
*magazines going back to the mid 80s
*books that have deep layers of fluff on them cos they've not been moved in over 10yrs
*cupboards full of vinyl records (yes. I know they could now be an investment. Not the artists we've got though)
*DVD's of films not watched or films we've seen that were 'good' and we might want to see again....(no I don't think so)
*male dress clothing (silk shirts, waistcoats, bow ties. tuxedos) in case we go on another cruise...(not likely now due to circumstances)

Children <eyes squabbling DC>

Books. We have lots of books, unlikely to re read them but I hate the idea of a house with no books. And the DC might read them one day…

theshadeofgreen · 24/10/2022 11:55

Glass jars that I wash and keep 'just in case'
Clothes
Toys that don't get played with but 'might one day'
Towels - I'm sure those at the bottom of the pile were an engagement gift 13 years ago and haven't moved since

wearethetiny · 24/10/2022 12:04

Kids books
Lots of small tat kicking about from McDonald's
Coats (I love them tho)
Shoes ( kinda need different pairs tho for variety)
Football cards/ Pokémon cards
Teddy's
Fleece blankets
Drink bottles
School bags from previous years that are too good to throw away

whiteonesugar · 24/10/2022 12:16

Oh i have about 11 coats. Probably wear 3 on a regular basis.

RampantIvy · 24/10/2022 12:19

The clue is in my user name Grin
We have ivy growing over on of our fences, and I am forever having to cut it back. I can't get to the base because the other side of the fence is a railway line.

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 24/10/2022 12:20

Loads of books. Face masks. Candles, especially tea lights.

PortiasBiscuit · 24/10/2022 12:20

I really have no idea how that happened .. 😁

butterfliedtwo · 24/10/2022 12:26

Other people would say that I have too many books. They are wrong, of course.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 24/10/2022 12:39

Trainers - I think I have 8 that I wear regularly, another 6 that I wear occasionally and about 12 pairs still unworn

hiredandsqueak · 24/10/2022 12:43

I'm pretty brutal at decluttering but I have too many mugs because I like them and some were bought for me and don't feel able to throw away. I also have too much cutlery mostly because we were a large family so needed it but the older ones left home and I never ditched the surplus.

CherryLongIsland · 24/10/2022 12:44

Bags of pasta with about one portion left in,
Glass ramekins you get with puddings in,
ditto baking cheese dishes,
Flavoured gins- I love plain gin however people seem to like buying me random flavoured ones,
Jars of paprika and cumin- I have ones I've bought myself and then older DC come back from uni each summer and bring theirs to add to the collection,
Odd socks I have a huge bag full,
Dishmatic sponges- I keep forgetting I have them and buy more.

You can’t ever have too many cats @PortiasBiscuit 😻

roses2 · 24/10/2022 12:48

256 dresses and 41 jackets

OMG! Well done on decluttering and listing on Vinted though!

CatNamedEaster · 24/10/2022 12:49

Plastic boxes with no lids.
Plastic lids with no boxes.
I can't throw any of them out because I know that I will then find the missing box/lid a day later.

Tea lights. I must have gone through a phase of buying a bag on every Ikea visit when I lived near it.

Clothes that don't fit (approx 80% of what's in the wardrobe).

AnApparitionQuipped · 24/10/2022 12:53

Clothes - I can't resist a charity shop bargain and I'm bad at getting rid of them because I always think I might have occasion to wear them in some mythical future universe.
