What things do you have too much of?

I’ve recently been on a bit of a decluttering mission and have discovered things that I have a huge excess of and I’m trying to work my way through now (and not buy any more!)
I was thinking surely other people have those things that they buy every time they hit a shop even though they have 15 versions at home?

So mine are -
Candles
Herbal tea (so so many!)
Face masks
Childrens craft sets & supplies
Those seasoning in a bag things (like the Maggi ones)
And DH’s is baking supplies!

This winter I foresee lots of chicken dinners lit by candlelight followed by home baked cakes, I am determined to use up these things (why do I buy them and never use them?! Why?!!)

What are yours?

Books. Nothing apart from that - I very rarely go shopping which helps. And have moved most years for last 13 years/spent a year travelling which has forced my hand to keep minimal stuff!

MissPiggysPinkDress · 24/10/2022 19:57

Lip balm. I love the stuff

MotherOfPuffling · 24/10/2022 20:00

Clothes that I haven’t fit into since having DD (who is nearly 9). Because one day maybe they will fit again. Or DD may want them as a teenager (she won’t).

Just moved about 2000 books. 200 of those are the best books I've read that go on the 'keep' shelf, and the rest are unread 🤦‍♀️😆

I'm doing something similar at present but would be scared to count.
I've shifted a bag of books every day for the last 3 days and fortunately there are lots of supermarket charity bookshelves nearby.
There's another 6 bags to go and I can't believe the amount of duplicates I have. Lots of duplicate Sally Rooney, Graham Norton , Martina Devlin and Rebecca Tope books.

@Bananalanacake Me too!!! (I have hundreds of toy cars specifically but other toys generally too).

Clevererthanyou · 24/10/2022 20:16

@ShippingForecastMeditator Very good 😂😂

WonderingWanda · 24/10/2022 20:26

Way too many lids for the two tupperware boxes that I seem to own, where have the rest of them gone?

Children's books, I can't make myself part with them, too many wonderful memories.

Hundreds of half completed colouring books.

ShutYerYapAndGetOnWithIt · 24/10/2022 20:29

Time Sad
vinyl records
DVDs (about 800)
Duvet covers (13)
nail polishes (12)

LittleLlamaMay · 24/10/2022 20:33

Candles, kitchen utensils and cookware, books that I don't read, notebooks, art supplies and paints and general tat that I don't do anything with but can't seem to let go of!

Oh and spare bedding?! what house needs 5 duvets.

ParentallyUnprepared · 24/10/2022 20:33

Books. So many books. I need to read them and pass them on before buying more.

Skincare. I used to have a GlossyBox subscription and it was all very samey. And I never use the stuff.

IntentionalError · 24/10/2022 20:38

Books. We had a massive clear-out during lockdown but we’ve still got far too many of the damn things. Everyone else must have been doing likewise because it got to the point where all the local charity shops were refusing to accept any more books, and we tried giving them away without success, so some ended up in re-cycling.

Unforgettablefire · 24/10/2022 20:39

Hairs Hmm

LibertyLily · 24/10/2022 20:51

Cushions...till recently we had 80+ (I say we, but obviously I'm the cushion hoarder, not DH) but we had a clear out and now have (just!) 41 😁

That said, we used to have eleven sofas (at a larger house)!!! But now we're down to three sofas, a love seat and a garden sofa.

DVDs - we had 600+ purchased when we had no TV aerial so didn't watch anything but dvds. Again we've recently had a purge and now have a more respectable 250.

Jellycatrabbit · 24/10/2022 20:52

I've been having a decluttering year, but the things I can't part with:

Whisky - DH has about 15 bottles mostly with just a wee dram in the bottom he's keeping "to compare"

Printer paper - had loads from the office in 2012 to wfh but then we went paperless but it is Useful. Potentially.

Kids toys - finding it hard to pass on the stuff dc1 never played with in case dc2 will (She probably won't) or duplicates like the 8 bunches of plastic grapes, 10 cabbages, etc.

Shoes - 40+ pairs of office appropriate heels - I'm currently a sahm

Mugs - I got a reputation as a mug smasher so now everyone buys them for me "haha you'll need it by next week". Haven't smashed one for ages (She says hopefully)

I have exactly the right number of books which is a full bookcase in every room (probably a few thousand). I'm trying a one in one out policy. It's working OK.

MotherWol · 24/10/2022 21:28

Media: cds, dvds, vinyl, books. DH would sooner put up more shelves than take a bag to the charity shop. I’m a library/digital media only person so I’ve gradually decluttered my own stuff to the point that I’m just surrounded by DH’s books and music. I’d hoped to lead by example, but he just fills the space I’ve created with more of his own.

EndlessMagpies · 24/10/2022 21:59

Odd socks - there are about a hundred of them in a big carrier bag in the airing cupboard. I have no idea how we have accumulated so many.
Also:
Mugs
Empty plant pots
Baking paraphernalia
Cat toys
Old light bulbs that must fit something, if I could only figure out what
Pots of Body Shop body butter
China coffee pots - I collected them at one time, but got bored
Christmas decorations
More mugs

WellTidy · 24/10/2022 22:10

Shoes - I have bunions and find that many pairs of shoes fit fine in the shop, but seem to hurt when I’ve got them home.

Mugs - 80 odd for a family of four.

Paracetemol and ibuprofen - I went through a phase of buying 16 every time I saw them in boots or a supermarket and they were kept all round the house. And the. One day I had a sort out and put them all in the medicine cabinet. I was gobsmacked at how many we had.

Towels

Pants - I had 40 pairs when I last counted. I do a load of washing at least every two days, sometimes every day
