What things do you have too much of?

I’ve recently been on a bit of a decluttering mission and have discovered things that I have a huge excess of and I’m trying to work my way through now (and not buy any more!)
I was thinking surely other people have those things that they buy every time they hit a shop even though they have 15 versions at home?

So mine are -
Candles
Herbal tea (so so many!)
Face masks
Childrens craft sets & supplies
Those seasoning in a bag things (like the Maggi ones)
And DH’s is baking supplies!

This winter I foresee lots of chicken dinners lit by candlelight followed by home baked cakes, I am determined to use up these things (why do I buy them and never use them?! Why?!!)

What are yours?

I’ve got an airing cupboard full of throws and blankets, but they might come in handy this year.

DemBonesDemBones · 24/10/2022 18:51

Just moved about 2000 books. 200 of those are the best books I've read that go on the 'keep' shelf, and the rest are unread 🤦‍♀️😆

Fabric!
I live in a two bed house, the second bedroom is full of fabric.. always a problem when DS1 comes home at Christmas! Luckily he doesnt mind me building him a 'nest' in the middle of it Grin

Those mini shampoo/shower gels you get in hotels. I keep collecting them in case I go to a hotel that doesn't provide them but they always do. I've now started taking them swimming to use them up.

ShippingForecastMeditator · 24/10/2022 19:01

Plastic boxes with no lids.
Plastic lids with no boxes.
I can't throw any of them out because I know that I will then find the missing box/lid a day later.

Tea lights. I must have gone through a phase of buying a bag on every Ikea visit when I lived near it.

Clothes that don't fit (approx 80% of what's in the wardrobe).

Are you me? Thank goodness someone else has recalcitrant plastic boxes, I swear they come to life in the small hours and shuffle themselves about. I have tried several marking systems, but I think they rub off each other’s labels.

the tea lights will be useful when the lights go out, I have acquired some boxes of matches from Tesco Express, the only place which seems to do them now.

The clothes will fit one day. Perhaps the boxes could have a word with them re self changing.

lololola1987 · 24/10/2022 19:17

Single socks, sooo many single socks.

A580Hojas · 24/10/2022 19:20

pencils, pens, old kitchen utensils, books, husband's clothes, clothes waiting to go to the charity shop, DVDs, CDs, empty plastic plant pots, single bedding, old half-used notebooks, Lego.

StopStartStop · 24/10/2022 19:20

Body fat?

I've been decluttering for a few years and there isn't much left. I need to go through tools (screwdrivers etc) and photographs. I did crockery last weekend. I might go back to clothes and get rid a few things I've kept 'just in case'. Like a wrap I love but haven't worn for a few years.

mamaduckbone · 24/10/2022 19:22

Books.
We moved house a year ago and somehow the books seem to have multiplied...I still have several boxes of them homeless as of yet. I find it almost impossible to get rid.
Also, pens and pencils, notebooks and general stationery.

LetUsPonce · 24/10/2022 19:23

Pens
Dinner plates
Pianos
Swimming caps

MischiefManager · 24/10/2022 19:24

Mugs
Towels
Body lotion from gift sets

Chateaudiaries · 24/10/2022 19:25

Cookery books. I can’t help myself. There is a favourite recipe or two on each of them so I can’t get rid.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/10/2022 19:36

DH - magazines - Cycling Weekly since he was 15. He's 47. Do you know how many weeks that is??? They have moved house three times. He has never looked at them. There are about 2 years worth stacked up next to his side of the bed. And then there are all the mountain biking magazines too..

SaintVitasShagulaitas · 24/10/2022 19:41

Clothes, shoes, candles, cleaning products, sample size toiletries which I probably won't ever use.

TheChosenTwo · 24/10/2022 19:43

Lipsticks. And face serums.
Other than that, I’m ruthless about keeping things under control, most weekends I tackle things I think that are creeping up (from things like general clutter piles, kitchen drawers, kids outgrown clothes, toys, books on the shelf, anything really), only small 30 minute jobs just it’s enough to hold it all at bay. I would feel really miserable with a house that was bursting at the seams with ‘stuff’. I grew up in a house that was kept really tidy but there was no spare space. No empty places. Just crammed full of furniture/cabinets/cupboards which were then also full of stuff. I like my house being less crammed.

I reduced the number of cookery books in my house by taking photographs of the comparatively few recipes I want to keep and/or might ever get around to cooking, then taking the books to the charity shop. Or you could just tear out the pages you actually want and keep them in a loose leaf file, but I am keen to digitise as much as possible.

Dresses and jackets. Over the weekend I completely emptied my wardrobes because I have new clothes in the way and no hanging space to speak of. 256 dresses and 41 jackets. They range in age from brand new to bought twenty years ago, so it sort of crept up on me, and because I haven’t changed in weight of size since I was about 18 they all still fit so have never had the impetus to have a clear out. Had to finally admit it’s time for those I never wear any more to go off to pastures new via Vinted.

Pretty minimal on most of everything else, though. Although I think DH has too many old “just in case” duplicates of most of his stuff.

Wow, that's a lot of dresses. It's difficult when some are purely summer dresses and are really only worn in the summer time. I feel a little better now when I get back to my decluttering.
