Is this a shocking amount of alcohol?

Yeah yeah if you have to ask it's a problem etc etc, but just wondering if anyone else is at this level or if you think it's absolutely terrible. Two bottles of prosecco on a Friday night (16 units in total) and the same on Saturday night. So 32 units in total, prosecco is less than wine (wine would blow my head off but this doesn't somehow) so I'd say around the equivalent of 3 bottles per wine in total. This isn't every weekend... but I admit it's pretty regular. I never drink in the week (or want to) I have a busy stressful job, other evening commitments and I'm in bed knackered by 9pm most week nights!! I know it's way above the guidelines but lots of things are...

If you're in your early twenties OP, then I would say it's a lot, but you're only young once so crack on. You'll be old and sensible before you know it and your liver can probably take it.

If you're over 35, it may be time for some soul searching.

Do you have children, @FuckingHell123 ?

No I don't have children, it's never been for me and no I haven't been "on it" today. I just feel sometimes (although yes I thoroughly admit I can get touchy) it's pretty common on here for people to give their two pence worth in the disguise of being productive when in reality they just feel superior by kicking someone else when they are down.

There was nothing malicious in the post you snapped at though. You can't fault people for answering honestly.

I wouldn't say your level of consumption is shocking, but it is too much and will be doing you harm especially in the long run. This is your current coping mechanism for your stress, it's maladaptive, it will be harming you. Realising it's a problem is the first step towards changing things, if that's what you want to do. It sounds like you're in a bad place right now and given the level of consumption maybe have been for a long time.

You don't have to just accept your job is horribly stressful, you can look for a new job or retrain or seek help to cope with the stress. A psychologist can't magic the stress away, but they can provide coping mechanisms. If you're depressed which would be a possibility with chronic stress seeing your doctor and medication might help. I don't know the pathways to seek help for alcohol dependence, but I expect one option would be through your GP.

I've got absolutely nothing to feel superior about, trust me. I just think sometimes it's easy to dismiss these things under the guise of "I work hard, I deserve it".

notanothertakeaway · 21/10/2022 20:53

2 bottles + 2 bottles does not = 3 bottles !!!

Recommendation is not to drink more than 14 units per week. You are drinking 40. Of course this is excessive

Come the fuck on... and yes I am sober. When I read comments like "oh how many has she had?" "second bottle down is it?" "started has she?" that's not being helpful. That's being fucking judgemental and downright NASTY. Talking to me like I'm some freak show. Call it what you want. Thank you for the helpful and non judgemental replies on here, I do appreciate it xx 😘

4 bottles of Prosecco in a weekend on a regular basis pretty hard-core I would say.

There also seems to be a lot of denial in your OP (it's only really 3 bottles of wine, regularly but not every weekend, dont drink in the week etc)

LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 21/10/2022 21:01

OP what are you looking for from this? Do you genuinely want to know if you're drinking to much or do you just want to hear other people do this so you can tell yourself it's ok? Is this an okay amount of drinking, no. Could you go on for years drinking like this without it causing great harm, probably. There will be people that say it's fine, it's highly likely they drink in a similar way. It's your life.

Nosleepforthismum · 21/10/2022 21:01

Two bottles of Prosecco in one night would floor me and I used to be an impressive drinker so I do think it’s too much. Genuinely no judgement here though. My lovely mum was an alcoholic (fortunately still here and 5 years sober) and she used to drink that by 11am each day. I gave up drinking about a year ago, partly because I had my DS but mainly because I hated the feeling in the morning, the fuzzy head, beer fear and the rest of the day written off and it just stopped being worth it to me. Can I ask why you’ve posted here? Do you think you are drinking too much?

Okdoke.

PeloFondo · 21/10/2022 21:03

I think it's an issue if you can't stop doing it
Like how would you feel if someone said you had to not drink for 3 months, 6 months? If it makes you panicky/angry then it's an issue

HappyChickenEggs · 21/10/2022 21:08

Yes it is

Stravaig · 21/10/2022 21:09

So you're a solitary binge-drinker, OP? Four bottles a weekend is far above the unit limit for a week, which is harmful for your immediate and long-term health. It is concentrated into two days which is even worse in terms of load on your body processing it. And it is on your own, and habitual, so there's a dedication to it which screams dependence.

Echoing a pp, what has made you ask the question now? Follow that thread.

Badnewsoracle · 21/10/2022 21:13

Yes that's a lot but it all depends on how often. I drank more than that at a hen do a few weeks ago, but it's the only time in 2022 I've drunk that much.

HappyChickenEggs · 21/10/2022 21:15

I read your OP, my answer to was that, to me it is shockingly high intake.

I know an alcoholic, they might drink more than you now, but they did drink like this for a few years first. Then crept into a bit every evening, made them feel depressed, then lost job.

I hope you don’t see this as a kick, honestly to me it is a very large amount to take on ongoing basis and I’d be surprised if it isn’t affecting your mental health.

Veryverycalmnow · 21/10/2022 21:26

I used to drink a lot in my 20s and I wouldn't have thought much of getting through that much alcohol. I know many people who still do this big drinking. Most people in their 40s that I know don't or can't do that anymore. Once I had a child it was out of the question. I sometimes have a drink but my maximum is probably just under 1 bottle if I still want to function ok the next morning.
I wonder if you want to lower it or happy to stick with 2?

Navigatingnewwaters · 21/10/2022 21:27

Anniefrenchfry · 21/10/2022 20:24

So by your last couple of responses, what are you. A bottle deep? Two?

🫤

TheLoupGarou · 21/10/2022 21:37

In my 20's I could have probably drink the equivalent of that, but I would have been out with friends, not sat in the house. If I tried drinking that amount now (at 44) I would be dying of a hangover for days.... That amount isn't healthy OP, but you know that already.

MrsKeats · 21/10/2022 21:45

You asked and people answered.
Your defensive attitude shows that you know this amount of drinking is a problem.

Wheredoallthepensgo · 21/10/2022 22:19

I'd say yes it's way too much. It's what, 2 and half times the recommended limit for women? Even if we take the recommendations with a "pinch of salt" it's surely still damn high and won't be doing your health any good for the long term.

I agree, what makes you open that second bottle? What is it adding your evening? I'd have a good think about it.

Wheredoallthepensgo · 21/10/2022 22:26

Oh and yes most Prosecco is around 11-12% abv so pretty similar to a lot of white wines.

At 11% that's roughly 8 and half units per bottle. So very roughly bottle and a half a week would be around the recommended maximum limit for women. And you're on 4.

Calandor · 21/10/2022 22:33

Yes that's a lot. It's four bottles of wine in two days.

I'll admit I've done the same - even 3 bottles on occasion - but only when I was really struggling and unhappy.

I drink a fair amount on nights out but if you're aware you're having 4 bottles over two nights you know it's a lot.

Ugzbugz · 21/10/2022 22:45

Its no worse than the obesity epidemicnits probs less.

Yes it's over the recommended units but it's up to you.

Same as people who eat shit, do zero excercise etc.

lightisnotwhite · 21/10/2022 22:48

Candleabra · 21/10/2022 14:14

Prosecco is the same as wine usually. I know it seems lighter somehow but most types are around 12/13%

No. It’s called Prosecco because it has to be Prosecco; grapes, region method have to be specific to the wine. Its 11%.

Anyway. Yes it’s a lot. No it’s not shocking. You’ll have to cut down at some point otherwise it will do you damage. I think most people give up stuff in their late 40’s and 50’s when age catches up with them

I do think some people on here are being a bit twatty though. They wouldn’t dare take cheap shots at an anorexic about what they’d eaten today and to just eat more.
