Is this a shocking amount of alcohol?

Yeah yeah if you have to ask it's a problem etc etc, but just wondering if anyone else is at this level or if you think it's absolutely terrible. Two bottles of prosecco on a Friday night (16 units in total) and the same on Saturday night. So 32 units in total, prosecco is less than wine (wine would blow my head off but this doesn't somehow) so I'd say around the equivalent of 3 bottles per wine in total. This isn't every weekend... but I admit it's pretty regular. I never drink in the week (or want to) I have a busy stressful job, other evening commitments and I'm in bed knackered by 9pm most week nights!! I know it's way above the guidelines but lots of things are...

I used to drink that much but over the course of the week. It was still too much, and my health now is just so much better. I gradually cut down and found better hobbies for which I wanted to be jumping out of bed on Saturday morning (oh yeah and had 3 kids in 4 years and never slept, that definitely shut down all drinking!).
FWIW during that time of heavy drinking, I had 3 root canals and 2 crowns done, at 25. It's only too easy to pretend it's just a coincidence, but it's funny how I've had no dental or other health problems (well, apart from the hideous anxiety that is my state of being) since I cut down.

What are you doing while you are drinking? At home? With people?

It varies to be honest. I rarely go to pubs anymore because I can't be arsed with all the noise. Sometimes I have friends over, sometimes I'll be at one of theirs, sometimes I don't want anyone over and I'll drink whilst cooking or sitting laughing my arse off watching Bridesmaids. Not because I'm depressed or anything, I just genuinely love my own company. As I say this isn't every weekend but yes you're all right I probably shouldn't do it at all.

I can’t even manage a full bottle anymore! Two glasses of wine or maybe 3 of Prosecco is non hang over for me. Any more isn’t worth it.

If I’m out with one of my friend we do two bottles of cava/Prosecco but that’s with food and over 4/5 hours at least. More chatting than drinking. I also have to have a soft drink or water nowadays. That’s every 2/3 months. Still too much tho I guess.

4 bottles in two days regularly is a lot yes. Doesn’t really matter if you aren’t drinking in the week your liver has to process it all.

Don't you wake up feeling utter s**t? Its alot. Id be paralytic!

Husbandintheroom · 21/10/2022 14:22

1 bottle on a Fri and 1 on a sat should be your limit: tip: just buy 1 bottle at a time then you don’t have a second one to open.

Notanotherwindow · 21/10/2022 14:22

It's a lot just to yourself. Between 2 of you and with a meal it wouldn't be so bad.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/10/2022 14:25

I can do that some weekends. Then some weekends I don't have any. Some weeks I have a few bottles throughout the week AND a drink at weekends. Sometimes I don't.

If you think it's a problem stop

Vikrum · 21/10/2022 14:26

It is a lot, but I know what you mean. Prosecco is really easy to drink, it goes down fast and I will definitely drink more of that than if I have a bottle of Pinot Grigio for example. I can easily down a bottle of Prosecco (probably could drink two) in a Friday evening (and it doesn't get me anywhere near as drunk as other things) so I'm now not buying it unless a special occasion like Christmas or anniversary. I was really worried that I couldn't say no to alcohol about a month ago because I could so easily finish a bottle of Prosecco, so I changed to a bottle of white wine, and it's still in my fridge with one glass missing. I don't fancy it, I don't feel like I need a drink at all, so I really do think there is something in Prosecco besides alcohol that makes it so moreish and easy to drink!

Maybe try and buy a bottle of white wine instead of the Prosecco and see if you drink it all. If you do, take steps to address your problem with bingeing alcohol. If you don't, don't buy Prosecco.

CableTidy · 21/10/2022 14:28

I probably drink about the same OP, it's more than I should but that's the truth

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/10/2022 14:29

The only person who really matters in terms of the question of 'is this bad/is it too much' is you OP

Some people see having a second half lager as the sign of a raging alcohol problem, others would drink your intake every night without missing a beat.

Provided you understand the risks, your drinking doesn't cause issues with money, jobs, childcare, timekeeping etc, and you're happy enjoying what you do, I don't see how it matters a damn what anyone else thinks. The only person who has any right to decide what is an appropriate amount for you to drink is you.

FWIW I don't think it's in any way excessive for weekend nights, but then that's probably because I drink like a fish and couldn't care less about monitoring 'units' and such.

SirMoose · 21/10/2022 14:29

This is a pretty normal amount in my friendship circles.

I agree with this. Is it causing problems in your life? If not then it might be best to cut down for your health but the situation isn't catastrophic. If you're spending money you can't afford, can't do anything with your kids because you're hungover, arguing with your partner about it and so on then yes you have a serious problem on your hands and you are the only one who can sort it out.

greenhousegal · 21/10/2022 14:35

It is too much if it is affecting your life and those around you, if you can't function, if you drink and drive, if you get into debt, cause mayhem, etc. etc.

Otherwise it's no worse than all the other unhealthy things people can do on a weekend. Drug taking being one of them. Alcohol is legal.

keeprunningupthathill · 21/10/2022 14:36

So you drink 30 units a week? I think that's fine to be honest. It's not going to kill you. But nobody drinks on mumsnet.

PersonaNonGarter · 21/10/2022 14:36

Why are you asking now?

CarPoor · 21/10/2022 14:36

2 whole bottles by yourself is a lot. I would feel like death the next day if I drank two bottles of prosecco!

On occasion, like say a wedding I would probably drink that much. And I think if your with friends getting carried away then okay, fine.

But sometimes me and DH have 2 bottles between us and I really feel that is too much. I feel drunk and whilst I'm definitely not someone who thinks 2 small glasses of wine makes an alcoholic, I dont want to be getting drunk regularly in my living room.

But it's your life, and your body. It won't be doing fantastic things for your health but again that's your decision. Your not endangering anyone but you.

80sMum · 21/10/2022 14:38

Oh, my goodness! Yes, drinking two bottles of wine in one evening is far, far too much. Two glasses might be OK, but two bottles, absolutely not.

Try to picture what such a large dose of alcohol will be doing to your body - and how long it will take your body to be rid of it, how much strain it will inflict on your kidneys, your liver, your heart - and the effect this will have on your long-term health if you don't cut down.

Daisychainsx · 21/10/2022 14:39

I think that's a lot but I'm not a big drinker... 2 glasses and I'd be floored nevermind 2 bottles. Why not go for 1 bottle per night and do half prosecco half OJ? That way you have the same number of drinks but substantially less alcohol? You'll feel so much better if you cut down. It'll be cheaper too.

RaininSummer · 21/10/2022 14:40

Seems an insane amount to me and must cost a fortune.

ChakaKhanfan · 21/10/2022 14:42

Yes that’s too much for one person.
mom not sure if you need ‘help’ only you can answer that, can you cut down to just two over the whole weekend?

ChakaKhanfan · 21/10/2022 14:43

Should say I’m not sure…I don’t think you my mom

followacrowforacrust · 21/10/2022 14:44

You KNOW it is excessive.

mondaytosunday · 21/10/2022 14:45

I know plenty of people who drink three or four or more bottles of wine a week. It's more than recommended, for sure, but I certainly don't think it's uncommon.

dementedma · 21/10/2022 14:45

Less than I drink...which isnt a recommendation but if you are alcohol free all week you are doing a lot better than many

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 21/10/2022 14:49

The thing is do you feel it's too much?? Frankly what a bunch of strangers on the internet think isn't important.

I probably drank more than you. Usually about 3-4 bottles of wine over the weekend and maybe a couple during the week...and I felt like shit. I was fed up feeling guilty, tired, anxious and hungover. So I stopped. I'm 130 days AF and it feels bloody amazing. Start reading some quit lit or listen to podcasts. It's the best decision I've possibly made in decades.
