Just oil have played a blinder, crossing shut for 24hrs, traffic backed up everywhere spouting fumes 🤬🤬
why can’t they just open the bridge and let traffic flow ? They’re tied on so if they fall they’ll only dangle 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agree. The only folk this impacts are the vulnerable. People who face wages deducted or disciplinary for being late, people who work in the care sector who have 20 minutes to get clients up washed dressed fed medicated and comfortable and don’t get paid for travelling time between jobs, people facing sanctions for not turning up to the job centre on time for appointments etc. In the middle of the current financial mindfuck it just makes you detest them. And their cause.

MarshmallowMadness · 17/10/2022 15:06

I wish everyone would just pretend they can’t see them, they’d soon come down then - if they weren’t getting any attention. They’re like toddlers throwing a strop, everyone knows you just ignore it and they stop.

Plexie · 17/10/2022 15:08

I wondered the same but I suppose if they fall and go splat on the bridge or a vehicle it will cause a hell of a mess to clean up and that will cause delays too. Plus drivers wouldn't want a falling person impacting on their vehicle, so I guess it's for the good of the bridge users that the protectors are removed intact.

Personally, I'd be tempted to leave them up there for a few days. Do we know if they have food and water with them?

If they don’t I’m sure a kindly police officer will climb up there and offer them some instead of doing their bloody job 🙄

MatildaMonroe · 17/10/2022 15:13

I agree @MarshmallowMadness , just ignore them

OneFrenchEgg · 18/10/2022 08:45

Think dc is stuck in it / was in it. Just heard an ambulance was stuck in it earlier.
Absolute arseholes. Need to get the idiots down - helicopter ?

TotallyTERF · 18/10/2022 08:52

I do feel for the police here. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't in situations like this.

The protestors are just attention-seeking arseholes.

thephoticsneezer · 18/10/2022 08:55

We are on the south coast and face a 2 hour delay or travelling an extra 100 miles round the M25 the other way using loads more diesel to avoid them 😡 to get home.
I think if they opened it they'd be lots of rubbernecking and drivers not paying full attention but they could put a 20mph speed limit or close the two lanes closest to them

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 18/10/2022 09:04

I heard lots about the travel disruption on the radio travel segments yesterday but they just said it was due to "an incident" but the chaos seemed to go on all day. I didn't realise it was protesters.

Who cares?

Discovereads · 18/10/2022 09:08

They are eco-terrorists. They interviewed one and he was pitching for people to sign up to civil disobedience actions they’re planning like more bridges, more traffic stops, more oil stations…etc. It’s these idiots that are causing the government to take away many of our peaceful protest rights. You can’t abuse rights and keep them, they come with responsibility and these morons are ruining it for everyone else.

Kellie45 · 18/10/2022 09:11

Why on earth we don’t leave them up there is beyond me. The alternative is to make them pay and compensate everyone for the number of hours of work they have held everyone up for. These people are just terrorists and need to be treated as such.

TotallyTERF · 18/10/2022 09:17

The terrorist angle is interesting. I wonder how the police et al. would react to this stunt if it was by religious extremists?

crackofdoom · 18/10/2022 09:18

So, given that we are already facing the effects of climate breakdown- that is due to get far, far worse if we continue to use fossil fuels at the rate we do, that our government is allowing new oil and gas exploration -what would YOU suggest they do to bring this to people's attention- that they haven't done already? This is borne out of true desperation.

(And to the PP suggesting that they're attention seeking: well, yes. That's rather the point 🙄).

So much drama. We have already reduced the use of fossil fuels. We have been transitioning away from them for decades. This isn’t a quick process. The exploration is for fuel we need to finish the transition.

They’re desperate because like every other offshoot of extinction rebellion they have been fed a pack of lies about climate change and world government actions towards decarbonisation.

donquixotedelamancha · 18/10/2022 09:24

Why does it need bringing to people's attention? Are there people who don't know?

Surely it needs well thought out solutions and then campaigns to persuade people to get behind those solutions?

GordonsAlive85 · 18/10/2022 09:26

I live about 15 minutes from the bridge, the traffic has been horrendous. Currently waiting for a bus to work which will unlikely turn up

crackofdoom · 18/10/2022 09:26

Discovereads "a pack of lies" about climate change? By whom? The United Nations? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change? 99% of the world's scientists? Right. Mere charlatans, the lot of 'em 🙄.

Also, sadly, last year humans emitted the most greenhouse gas EVER. We are nowhere near reducing our emissions yet, despite the comforting lies you're choosing to believe.

crackofdoom · 18/10/2022 09:31

donquixote Well thought out solutions and campaigns already exist. The problems the world's facing aren't technological- they're political.

Hardly surprising, when the country ends up being run by an ex employee of Shell, is it? 🙄

BigWoollyJumpers · 18/10/2022 09:36

Meanwhile in countries around the worlds poorest people are demonstrating to get governments to increase access to oil and gas, and to reduce its price. They are rioting at 70p per litre. In the short term, and certainly in developing countries, oil cannot just magically be made to disappear.

By extinction rebellion. As I said in my post. Have you even read their publications?

Well, you’re going global then. The protesters on the bridges want the U.K. government to act on U.K. emissions, which we have been reducing. You can’t seriously think that little old U.K. by itself can reduce global emissions?

thereisonlyoneofme · 18/10/2022 09:40

Total arseholes, you can bet they havent walked to get to the bridge, are wearing clothing made from oil products. If we gave up all fossil fuels instantly we'd be back in the dark ages, mind you people with horses would be fine getting about

slowquickstep · 18/10/2022 09:46

They are acting like toddlers, ignore and they will soon give in

Discovereads · 18/10/2022 10:03

@crackofdoom
See graph. U.K. total carbon emissions are the lowest they’ve been in a hundred years…..Do you still think these protesters are right in saying the U.K. is doing nothing and their fuckery is necessary to get the U.K. government “to act”?

I suggest they pop over to one of the worlds biggest polluters and disrupt the lives of people over there. Let's say........errmmm China?
😅😅
Or even Russia if they're feeling super brave!!
