Human remains, believed to be part of a child’s skull have been found on Saddleworth Moor. Please god let this be Keith Bennett. That poor child can hopefully finally be laid to rest in eternal peace with his mother.

No. The BBC were reporting that something that appeared to be human remains were found. There is a world of difference.

At that point a number of news outlets were reporting that they were definitely human remains.

Hopefully this author is going to get a good lesson in how the internet is forever. He can delete what he likes. The guys a charlatan.

I feel so much for Keith's brother. He must be seething. To have his hopes raised and then realise it's some amateur sleuth who's treating it all like a big game.

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 02/10/2022 09:41

The level of mental cruelty that Brady inflicted on Winnie and the rest of his family, and continues to do, is unfathomable. He is the epitome of true evil. To kill a child is beyond comprehension, to then play the games that he did for over 60 years is just beyond belief. It’s a crying shame that the information couldn’t have been tortured out of him to be honest (yes I know that goes against his human rights etc, but honestly who cares). Russell Edwards, of course not on any level comparable to Brady, has now also added to that mental cruelty. If he has knowingly exaggerated / fabricated the presence of human remains somehow, then he is also a truly wicked and despicable man. Keith Bennett was a real person. A 12 year old boy. Not a prop to be used in this man’s latest drive for PR.

As a side note, it has been speculated for years (I believe originally by a psychiatrist that treated Brady - I will try and find the source), that for several reasons, Brady doesn’t actually know where Keith’s body is.

IMO the way in which this man has obsessed over previous crimes, buying the last piece of phorensic evidence in the Jack the Ripper case, hiring people to excavate an area in the search for a child’s body over the years really isn’t healthy.

I think it’s safe to say that a lot of it is about publicity hence why he writes his books. But I also think there’s something more at play here He wants to be the one. He sees himself as some kind of miss marple type. It’s a bit sick really.

Not to derail the thread with talk of Brady (who deserves no more than contempt) I never believed that he knew where Keith was. He'd just never admit it.

I get the feeling that this author wants to 'beat' Brady. That by finding Keith's body, or at least claiming too and 'cracking the code' he could, in his eyes, be the man who defeated Ian Brady. It smacks of glory hunting and I do hope when all is said and done with this excavation that he faces some real life consequences for this. Like you say, this is a real person with a real family, a child. It's not some cat and mouse game with a long dead murderer.

He claims that he's solved who Jack the Ripper was. I think you are spot on about also wanting to be the person who defeats Brady and brings closure to the Bennett family. 'Look, I cracked two major murder mysteries that baffled everyone else!'

This is what we get for the fetishisation of "true crime." It's disgusting. All these podcasts and Netflix series about serial killers.

Brady died 5 years ago. But I would agree that he probably didn't know where the body was - the moors are very big places, and peat shifts a lot over a 50 year period.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/10/2022 12:19

If there are remains doesn't mean they are Keith Bennett, either. I'd imagine the moor is quite a handy place for bodies to be disposed of.

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 02/10/2022 12:44

Oh yes I know he did 5 years ago novum sorry if that wasn’t clear. When I said ‘continues to do so’ I was referring to the legacy of his actions x

chag I do agree about the bizarre fixation some people have on true crime, I really do think this case is different for many though. The UK public have lived alongside the infamy of the murders since they happened. As others have said, particularly for the people that live in the area where it all sadly happened, there are still very real feelings of emotion in the community as they live amongst families who were directly impacted. Something about Keith has touched so many of us, I assume because he is a child and the anger is always stronger when something happens to our most vulnerable. Keith is still a child, frozen in time, forever young and desperately needing to be brought back to his family. There will always be weirdos (like the author imo) with potentially ulterior motives, but I think for the majority, we just want to see a child put to a peaceful rest with his mother.

Livelovebehappy · 02/10/2022 12:51

If it isn’t, we have another murder to investigate. There are no other missing people we are aware of around that area. Praying that it is him. His mother suffered decades since his disappearance, and went to her grave still not having been able to lay him to rest.

So had the author found nothing?

Something but not human?

Presumably he alerted the media & some published just on his word?

I agree.

It perpetrates the names of these butchers and makes them famous. Many of them thrive on this.

It is the victims and their families who should be remembered and mourned; not the murderers who should be effective celebrated.

OneFrenchEgg · 02/10/2022 13:36

It's revolting if he really found nothing that he can just delete his tweet and move on. There should be some social consequences for his congratulatory behaviour

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 02/10/2022 14:26

Totally agree emotional. I believe I’m right in saying that the police have in the past attempted to put a stop to any new killers being given names such as ‘Yorkshire ripper’ ‘Suffolk strangler’ etc as it just assists in feeding the infamy and sensationalism.

OP posts:
Namechangedforthisonetoday · 02/10/2022 14:33

I really hope the police now investigate how this is all came to a head (as if they’ve got nothing else to do!). Where are the supposed fragments of jaw bone or something that can be interpreted as such? Did Lesley Dunlop really confirm that soil samples, taken from that particular site on the moor contained potential traces of human remains? Did Dawn Keen verify the presence of potential human remains via a photograph of something hidden in the peat? I feel that it would be beneficial if these particular parties came out and made a statement (ideally to the police), as to how and why this escalated the way that it did. I really wouldn’t like to believe that Edwards made all this up for attention. His behaviour on social media during and since, has been concerning to say the least. He should not be allowed to get away with this. If a book is waiting in the wings, I pray that no publisher will touch him.

I read that the psychiatrist and police heading the investigations Brady attended both thought he knew where Keith was. The psychiatrist believed it possible he took them to the grave and then away, to retain power.

Would he have remembered the exact spot though ?
I have nothing but contemporary for both Hindley and Brady but the Moor looks is huge I think they were just lucky finding the exact spot the other bodies were found.
