Human remains, believed to be part of a child’s skull have been found on Saddleworth Moor. Please god let this be Keith Bennett. That poor child can hopefully finally be laid to rest in eternal peace with his mother.

It annoyed me when he said something about kids these days not knowing about the murders and they shouldn’t be forgotten. That’s certainly not the case up here in Greater Manchester. The anger and hatred for those two is still as visceral as it ever was. There are still a lot of people alive who remember it well, and remember the names of those children.

I was only very young when this was going on but I remember my parents talking about it. I have read a few of the many books/newspaper articles about the Brady and Hindley. It was shocking but I think people thought it more so because a woman was involved. I think the standout aspect of this case was when they found the Lesley Ann tape.It was played in court and even hardened senior detectives said it would never leave them. It has never been released publicly and I doubt it ever will. Unfortunately by the time they were caught the UK death sentence had been abolished

mustbetheseasonofthewitch · 01/10/2022 10:12

How does four graves 100s of yards apart from each other even make a swastika anyway?

An author was part of the team that found the skull believes Brady was attempting to make a Swastika shape with the graves.
Russell Edwards told the newspaper (the Sun) the female victims were left on the side of the A635 road, while the boys were placed on the other.
Brady was Nazi-obsessed and impressed Hindley by reading Mein Kampf in the original German when they met.
Mr Edwards said: “The significance of the road is it looks like part of the swastika, when you look at the locations of the graves, it is his version of a swastika although he never got to finish it.
“There is half a zig zag in the road and I thought it is significant to him.
“It pinpointed the area to search for Keith because of that shape.”

And if it IS Keith's remains, what then?

Does this really need to asked? There's lots of family that need closure. My dh's cousin is Keith Bennetts cousin.

NCFT0922 · 01/10/2022 10:24

@PauliesWalnuts I’m in Sheffield and it’s the same here too.

@CourtneeLuv

Does that not make your DH Keith Bennett's cousin too then?

No. Why would it. I have cousins on my mums side. And cousins on my dad's side. They aren't related to each other.

Dogsogdog · 01/10/2022 11:17

If it is Keith he can be given the funeral and burial that his mother always wanted, the snippy comments on here are uncalled for.

MayThe4th · 01/10/2022 11:46

Where has anyone said he shouldn’t.

Any remarks are rightly directed at a self congratulatory individual who is jumping up and down on social media smiling and claiming the glory for something which as yet has not been established. It’s not a treasure hunt, it’s the search for a missing child’s body.

if it is proven to be Keith Bennet, then the author can be given official recognition. But until then he should keep his self congratulatory smileys to himself.

According to the BBC they don’t even know yet whether it is human remains. So all this gloating is a bit premature.

I think you've missed my point. If it is indeed Keith's remains ( and I hope so for his family's sake) will the guy who found him still be vilified or turn into a hero overnight?

wellhelloitsme · 01/10/2022 12:14

I think you've missed other people made, including me. Here's mine again, surely you understand that it's the way he's gone about announcing this that people have an issue with.

I think it was his self congratulatory tone and (absolutely tone deaf) smiley faced that pissed people off the most.

He could have waited for the police to confirm remains are Keith's (which they haven't done) before making a public statement.

And he certainly didn't need to use smiley face emojis while making a public statement before police confirmation.

I think personally it would have been gracious and empathetic to wait until the police confirmed and ask Keith's family if they would like to be the people to issue a statement regarding him being found.

WhenRoyWentCrazy · 01/10/2022 12:16

I admire the tenacity of the man, and he sounds like his empathy for Keith’s mother kept him going but he should have waited until the police had investigated and let the family process it before tweeting etc.

Saucery · 01/10/2022 12:30

If he had found what he had found, contacted the police directly and then said nothing until it was at least confirmed as human remains, or Keith’s remains then I think most people would be fine with that.

That is initially what I thought had happened. Have now changed my view of this man in light of further comment on his actions. Shame on the media for reporting it like it had been confirmed.

WhenRoyWentCrazy · 01/10/2022 12:55

All the mixed emotions for the family. Hope they are okay as can be.

Georgeskitchen · 01/10/2022 13:06

@wellhelloitsme yes I get that point and I agree his behaviour has been a bit inappropriate and he should have quietly handed over to the police. I will add though, that within minutes of the police presence on Saddleworth Moor, the media circus would start big time

Yes but he inserted himself into that media circus when he didn't need to and was delighted to do so which is ghoulish and inappropriate.

And I don't think personally it was just 'a bit' inappropriate. It was self congratulatory and he completely centred himself rather than Keith, positioning it as primarily a successful accomplishment by him rather than being about closure for the family.

Perception of his motivation is therefore tarnished as it looks like it was for adulation and praise rather than for Keith's family. Whether that's true or not, that's now how it appears due to his behaviour.

I can't believe he didn't wait and ask Keith's family if they wanted to make a statement first. And it hasn't even been confirmed that the remains are connected Keith. He couldn't even wait for that confirmation, or wait to speak to the family, as he was so excited to shout about his own accomplishment.

I actually think his behaviour has been quite cruel and placed him at the centre of a tragic story about a little boy.

Yep.

GMP have confirmed that no human remains have been found so far but they are continuing to excavate.

I wouldn't trust this glory hunting author as far as I could throw him. Surely he could take the police right too what he 'found'?

ceecee32 · 01/10/2022 16:06

#UPDATE | GMP Force Review Officer Cheryl Hughes said: “Following information received which indicated that potential human remains had been found on the Moors,
specialist officers have today (1 October 2022) resumed excavation of a site identified to us.

“This information included photographs of the site and show what experts working with the informant have interpreted as a
human jaw bone. No physical evidence of a jaw bone or skull has been examined.

“However, based on the photographs and
information provided, and in line with GMP’s usual practice to follow-up any suggestion of human burial, we began our search of the site of interest.

“We have not found any identifiable human remains but our work to excavate the site is continuing.

“Conditions are difficult and it may take us some time to fully complete the excavation but we are committed to ensuring this is undertaken in the most thorough way possible.”

bellac11 · 01/10/2022 16:10

How confusing?

So have the police physically been there and the thing they saw is now not thought to be human?

But the archeologist said it was definitely a human jaw bone?

UrsulaPandress · 01/10/2022 16:11

What a cruel thing to do.

cc1997 · 01/10/2022 16:14

Someone said this was a hoax yesterday.

TheTantrumoftheToddlerIsThere · 01/10/2022 16:15

What the actual fuck?! 😡

UrsulaPandress · 01/10/2022 16:25

I hope he gets charged with wasting police time. And the fire crews

Badger1970 · 01/10/2022 16:28

I had a bad feeling about this yesterday. He deserves to be sentenced for wasting police time.
