Energy could have been handled differently , but taxing the companies might be as easy as it sounds and this hasn't helped. Many don't pay tax in the UK, or not much anyway.
At least they did something, but any government in power would have had to have done something. Im grateful for the 400 towards it.
It's just a shame that 100 billion was needed for this year alone and it'll bite deep into the areas where it's needed the most as it'll have to paid back somehow too. I agree that this will be held up as an achievement by them rather than an action that was actually needed.

Putin and his bloodthirsty pointless war has caused havoc. It's a shame he can't be stopped as it's ruining so many countries this winter , which was his aim too I suppose ;(
A nationalized energy company is a great idea
Depends how long it will take to set up and that will be years and only if we have a change of government.
It's a problem that isn't going away either

Have a look at this 80s

They also ejected a former News Photographer of the Year that works for the FT. Worrying.

Blimey.

One of the comments sums it up ‘is this the fascists being fash again?’

tobee · 05/10/2022 13:32

Be interested to see how they justify this ejection.

Fladdermus · 05/10/2022 13:34

Do we know why the press photographer was manhandled out?

the80sweregreat · 05/10/2022 13:45

Blossom , that's an interesting tweet!
On five live radio a few weeks ago they explained why windfall taxes are not easy to administer because of the complex rules around tax and off shore accounts and those companies that don't pay uK taxes etc.
I admit it sound complicated and I didn't get it , but it was clearly a reason they had to go down the borrowing routes.
This is just one company tweet, maybe other energy companies are not so keen to do this ?

I don't think so.

It happened yesterday as well

Altercation just now at Conservative conference between the BBC's Nick Robinson and a security guard who was very heavy-handedly trying to physically prevent him from politely asking a question of the Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

Blossomtoes · 05/10/2022 14:00

Ffs Nick Robinson is a Tory supporter - or at least he used to be. They’re so arrogant they think they don’t have to even pretend to be accountable any more.

Notonthestairs · 05/10/2022 14:18

Caught up with the speech. Appeared to be a rehash of her hustings speeches - I guess they thought that was a winning formula. Very little content. Victim mentality - incredibly easily threatened.

I can't imagine who would be inspired with confidence by the speech but I guess they must be out there somewhere.

Instantly takes one back to former Truss lover Mark Field and his manhandling of environmental protestors

Yes that flashed through my mind too.

Piggywaspushed · 05/10/2022 14:38

Freedom of speech and expression eh?

twitter.com/dinosofos/status/1577596369124360192

Elodie09 · 05/10/2022 14:42

That Tory man (ex lover of Truss I read) who manhandled the other protesting lady out of the dinner by grabbing the back if her collar/neck was absolutely appalling. It sickens me to watch it still today and then seeing that type of quick flashing anger again today is beyond grim.
Also, why is there no mention of Shell CEO wanting to hand over profits?

DuncinToffee · 05/10/2022 14:50

He is part if the growing anti growth coalition, do keep up Wink

Elodie09 · 05/10/2022 15:08

@DuncinToffee I’m such a silly girl ……
Never mind , Truss will believe and be very clear on her plan to deliver a high growth economy.
In all of the bs statements there is never any explanation of how she is going to do this.
I would like Beth Rigby to ask her how Truss, how are you going to get this done ?

tobee · 05/10/2022 15:42

Do you think that this is what Truss was going for?

Fladdermus · 05/10/2022 16:08

Just seen that Truss's speech included announcing plans to give the government the power to overturn decisions about human rights by the ECHR. At which point they become privileges bestowed on us by government rather than intrinsic to our existence.

the80sweregreat · 05/10/2022 16:47

Maybe the CEO of Shell should run to be a politician or start his own party.
Or link up with the Labour Party and all the ones who want the CP out! Linking up to get his message across as he sounds more in touch with the British public than Liz Truss is atm

DuncinToffee · 05/10/2022 16:52

Pound drops 2% against the US dollar

itsgettingweird · 05/10/2022 17:37

Every time she speaks we become financially worse off.

So much for growth.

Where can I watch speech - sounds more like a bloody assault?

Exactly this.

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/10/2022 17:43

I haven't seen it yet either. We are going to look for it shortly. Even dh wants to see it and he is not at all political. He's become much more interested in what's going on over the last few years but would much rather it went back to boring, uninteresting debate that doesn't make me swear at the t.v.

Did people really vote Conservative/Brexit to have their rights, freedoms and protections taken away?

Is there any point?

It'll just be a load of nonsense "rah rah" and point the finger of blame at someone who probably hasn't been in charge of this country for 12 years.

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/10/2022 18:31

Just catching it now. She's insane. She is so deluded she's not in the real world.
I live the start of her speech where she says that she doesn't want to control what people think, and then stands by why people who think differently to her are thrown out. That optic will go down well in an opposition video. Ffs.
