Also via Matt Dathan

Suella Braverman accuses Michael Gove and other Tory rebels of "staging a coup" on the 45p tax rate:

"I am disappointed about the subsequent reversal but I accept their reasons.

"I’m very disappointed that members of our own parliamentary party staged a coup effectively"

A coup Confused

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2022 13:54

Coup can also refer to an impressive success 😉

Fladdermus · 04/10/2022 13:58

I hear Suella Braverman has just announced plans to make it illegal to claim asylum in the UK if you enter illegally. For a lawyer she's got fuck all understanding of internaitonal law.

Piggywaspushed · 04/10/2022 14:02

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2022 13:47

The obsession with migrants continues. Braverman dreams about them.

"Suella Braverman says it would be “my dream” to see a flight deporting migrants to Rwanda by Christmas.

But she warns it will take much longer because of the lengthy process of legal challenges.

That's a really disturbing dream.

The Beth Rigby interview

There is genuinely no way to clip the car crash interview that Truss just had with the brilliantly persistent @BethRigby. So here is all of it in three parts. ~AA

PART 1

BR: "You don't accept that you've had a bad start."
PM: "I've always been clear this would be difficult."

When the PM says "I've always been clear this would be difficult" is she referring to the rest of us having to watch her stumble through life?

tobee · 04/10/2022 14:44

The most dangerous thing about Liz Truss is think she genuinely still believes she is up to the job.

Like a cult member I think she still believes everyone else is wrong. There are several good podcasts on cults, for example Uncover:Escaping NXIVM. Gives you a good idea as to how cult members are brainwashed by an ideology.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 14:53

She is definitely deluded. Not dim or even thick, but definitely been brainwashed by the likes of Patrick Minford who has never had to actually carry out any of his own policies , he just believes it'll work if you try hard enough. Now his found an apprentice in Ms Truss.
The conservatives have always been like this though. True believers , like many of my friends and relations , are totally in awe of them.
It's tragic they won't listen to anyone who tries to tell them they are wrong. They can do nothing wrong. They would never admit they are wrong.
Cult is a very good word for them

DuncinToffee · 04/10/2022 15:19

Vile

Suella Braverman on benefits.

" I want to cut welfare spending. We have far too many people in this country who are fit to work, who are able to work... & they choose to top up their salaries with tax credits & the benefit street culture is a feature of modern Britain"

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2022 15:28

"They choose"...

So nothing to do with low wages, caring responsibilities, disabilities.

DuncinToffee · 04/10/2022 15:34

All pretence of human decency is well and truly gone

Blossomtoes · 04/10/2022 15:41

Spot on assessment.

Agree Truss can't answer questions because she's trawling her mind for the nearest linked or semi linked pre packaged answer.

It makes her impossible to interview as she doesn't actually respond to the question so that the interviewer can build a picture. Very low emotional intelligence or she's just taken the media training literally.

"Boris damaged our integrity. Truss is damaging our competency"
Very true.

DuncinToffee · 04/10/2022 08:33

Another U-turn, Kwarteng will bring forward his fiscal statement and OBR forecast from Nov 23 to early Nov.

Kwarteng & Truss denying that they are bringing this forward now.
Some very confused messaging. Left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 15:55

Why don't the conservatives ask these business owners to pay their staff a higher wage? You know , if they don't have to claim in work benefits because they are paid the correct amount of wages, that might help with the welfare bills.
Make the rail companies pay a decent wage out of their profits.
It seems simple to me.
Aldi are apparently good employers , why not see what their model is and use this as a benchmark for the supermarket employees.
Whose been in power for 12 years ?

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2022 15:57

Great thread from Torsten Bell (Resolution Foundation) on cuts to benefits. Worth a read through - UC and child benefit seem to be most likely in the firing line.

Two things are pretty clear:
-Government wants to cut benefits to help fill big fiscal hole
-They can’t win any votes to do so🧵

twitter.com/torstenbell/status/1577297256159608835?s=46&t=23Qt00J89KyQ9usWs99RLw

Cornettoninja · 04/10/2022 16:03

Suella Braverman is an atrocious arrangement of atoms.

Why don't the conservatives ask these business owners to pay their staff a higher wage?

You’re sounding dangerously socialist Wink

tobee · 04/10/2022 16:06

Never understood why employers think it's a good idea to treat their staff badly. Making their employees think they're lucky to me in work, can easily be replaced etc. A bad employer thinks "I'll show them how powerful I am by treating them like dirt". Rather than "I'll show them that if I respect them, pay them well, treat them well, they'll respect me and want to work hard for me and the company".

TokyoSushi · 04/10/2022 16:07

Beth Rigby was bloody marvellous earlier!

This conference is just completely weird and I expect Truss' speech will be equally odd tomorrow. It seems like the end is not far off, I just can't quite figure out how it will come about, I still think that the likes of Gove will have something to do with it.

itsgettingweird · 04/10/2022 16:07

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2022 08:52

It's almost like they don't live in the real world.

Very interesting to read the dividing lines opening up. Mordaunt was quite clear she supports benefits should rise with inflation. She's far from a lone voice. Gove, McVey, Halfon & Green has voiced similar views.

Mourdant is a good MP despite some of her morals. She's done a lot of good for Portsmouth. She's especially good at childcare and benefits because if the area she serves.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 16:08

Ok, so I'm a socialist !
But if it gets the welfare bills down ( from those who work and claim ) it benefits everyone ?
I know it's not as simple as that , but surely there is a marry up there somewhere ?

AdamRyan · 04/10/2022 16:10

Objectification, seeing humans as "resources".
I know lots of managers who seem to have an attitude of "that one's broken, I'll get a new one" about staff

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 16:11

My Dh worked for a large motor manufacturing company for forty years and was treated like the minion he was most of he time. It paid its way as he was a professional, but they had some very dodgy work practices and bullies , it was cut throat.
He got a different job and is now treated really well. They value their staff there and treated as an equal
It makes a difference to moral.

Exc: Liz Truss tells how she has plans to buy tens of billions in future gas supply from Norway at close to current price

✅stability of supply and price
❌debt and deficit - this will cost a LOT

Here's extract from this morning's interview

twitter.com/SamCoatesSky/status/1577324656016621571?t=gesE9nbrrS67dNKKTmQ4Qg&s=19

DuncinToffee · 04/10/2022 17:54

The reason we were too late to reopen gas storage (as Germany has done) and must now pay over the odds for TWO DECADES, is because a year ago, our Energy Secretary thought gas storage was "a red herring" because our supply was so diversified.

Who was that? Kwasi Kwarteng.
