OK, another woo thread but I can't resist them so decided to post my experience of seeing a 'ghost '.

Years ago before I married, I stayed at DH's flat before I went on a business trip.

I couldn't sleep and was tossing and turning for a good few hours. I am pretty certain I was definitely wide awake as I was thinking about the press trip the next day and I was wondering how I was going to survive it if I'd not slept.

My DH was asleep on the sofa in the living room as he snores really loudly so I was in his room in his double bed. I remember turning over from facing the window to face the empty side of the bed. I then saw a woman who was actually sleeping under the duvet, eyes closed, as clear as I could see anything else in the room.

She was youngish, wearing what I can only describe as somd 1920s flapper headband, and was literally tucked in under the duvet.

I have thought about this many times but I am convinced that I was definitely not dreaming or half asleep. I actually sat up in bed and looked at her in total horror and fright. At the point where I wondered if I should prod her to see if she was real, a few minutes had gone by. I was literally so terrified that I had to hide under the duvet and then when I emerged after what seemed an age, she was gone.

I've never seen or experienced anything quire as scary since and I'm certain that I was hallucinating or dreaming. It's definitely made me think about whether ghosts genuinely exist 🤔

A few weeks after my lovely Mum had died suddenly and unexpectedly, I was alone in my house and having a cry. I was thinking if it was possible she would be able to give me some sort of a sign that she knew I was sad when I heard a woman's voice, not Mum's, right behind me say "She never leaves home". I jumped and spun round but of course there was no one there.

I often wonder which house was home. The house where she was born, the house we lived in when we kids were growing up or where they moved to after retiring.

Both me and my mum smelt cherry tobacco when driving in my mums car from the hospital where my dad was preparing for a serious operation. The smell lasted 20 seconds and we both knew the smell as my deceased grandad used to smoke it.

When I was a teenager, I was dreading going back to school because I had been bullied. I was getting quite worked up when I smelt something and realised it reminded me of an elderly relative. I didn't quite believe it, so tried to smell it more. That deep breathing calmed me down.

@DoraSpenlow I wonder if she meant that your Mum's presence is always with those she loved and in that sense she never leaves home - home is where the heart is, and all that.

I'm so sorry you lost your dear Mum recently. Be good to yourself 🌷

I never thought of that. Never felt her presence here though.

Thank for your kind thoughts but it is 23 years since we lost Mum. Still miss her every day.

I personally have never seen a ghost but have felt presences or something in places, usually old. Sometimes places I've rarely/never been to before.

Certain old places, I feel absolutely nothing, or if anything it's not registered so it can't be just that they're old. But I do think certain places either have is it morphic resonance or something relating to this. Peter Ackroyd covers this in his London book - leylines, certain parts of London feel different to others and it's historic.

I've heard far too many stories from people who've either seen/heard/felt something in various places, again, not been there or not known about this at the time so I can't say ghosts etc don't exist and they could also be timeslips.

What does irritate me/annoys me is when people discount this out of hand - it actually ended a relationship (new) because the person was adamant that ghosts etc didn't exist, got quite angry about it without taking my feelings on the subject into consideration.

In terms of ghosts wearing certain clothing - well I don't think ghosts change clothes so much and maybe it's what they were wearing when they died that is their 'costume'. A flapper wearing a headband in bed? To me, its quite possible this could happen, flapper arrives home from a party, bit drunk maybe, forgets to take off her hairband and just goes to sleep. I've gone to sleep with my hair in a ponytail, plaits etc from being out and only realised in the morning that I've got the bands in my hair.

When I was little, and my great grandad was in hospital, I told my mum I wasn’t allowed upstairs cos grandad told me no.

She was confused and then received a phone call saying that he had passed away.

@Lovegossip
Look up shadow people and hat man. It's an occurrence all over the world.
Its happened to 3 generations of my family, his appearance, then getting bolder.
Your description sounds very much like him.

NooNooHead1981 · 10/10/2022 19:50

@Rubyupbeat I had a nightmare when I waa aged 5 with a shadow man in it. He was sitting on the bed in my parents' room in the dream, then be turned to look at me. All I could see was a silhouette of a shadow with white eyes on his face. It was utterly terrifying 😳

@LadybirdsAreNeverHappy yes, I do think that ghosts wear the same clothes forever. Probably the ones that they loved most perhaps?

What if some ghosts can change their clothes?

What if the buildings with multiple hauntings are actually just haunted by one or two ghosts who like to mix it up? 😁

Elphame · 11/10/2022 09:49

A friend of mine (after a few drinks down the pub) suggested that the newly dead, who are to be ghosts, get to choose the one outfit they will be seen in!

MsGrahamCheese · 11/10/2022 10:02

Imagine the pressure!

Choosing an outfit for eternity!

Heels or no heels?
Maybe flip-flops?

What about a hat?

Happiest in jeans but a dress might be more 'woo' ?

BTW has anyone ever seen a ghost in flip-flops??

mamabear715 · 11/10/2022 10:48

They can wear what they want, & present at any age.. probably the one they were happiest at.

I've told this one before, less a ghost story, more something I don't understand.

Came home from school, middle of June, 15:30 so not dark or gloomy in the slightest. You couldn't see our front door from the road, it was tucked away behind some Leylandi trees.

As I walked past the trees I saw my mum stood there, by the front door. It was early so I said "oh, you're home early"

She pointed at the trees behind me, so I turned round to look and said "what?" She didn't answer so I turned back round and she was gone.

Didn't think anything about it (bizarrely) until she actually got home from work an hour later, confirmed she hadn't been home earlier and I freaked out.

It would have made a much better story if a tree came down in a storm and crashed into the house blah blah, but nope, we moved away three years later and the new owner cut the trees down.

Still have no idea what that was about!

This sounds like unconscious astral projection. My great grandfather was seen a few times in places by people when he was in another place altogether. Very odd!
