Haa anyone seen a ghost?

OK, another woo thread but I can't resist them so decided to post my experience of seeing a 'ghost '.

Years ago before I married, I stayed at DH's flat before I went on a business trip.

I couldn't sleep and was tossing and turning for a good few hours. I am pretty certain I was definitely wide awake as I was thinking about the press trip the next day and I was wondering how I was going to survive it if I'd not slept.

My DH was asleep on the sofa in the living room as he snores really loudly so I was in his room in his double bed. I remember turning over from facing the window to face the empty side of the bed. I then saw a woman who was actually sleeping under the duvet, eyes closed, as clear as I could see anything else in the room.

She was youngish, wearing what I can only describe as somd 1920s flapper headband, and was literally tucked in under the duvet.

I have thought about this many times but I am convinced that I was definitely not dreaming or half asleep. I actually sat up in bed and looked at her in total horror and fright. At the point where I wondered if I should prod her to see if she was real, a few minutes had gone by. I was literally so terrified that I had to hide under the duvet and then when I emerged after what seemed an age, she was gone.

I've never seen or experienced anything quire as scary since and I'm certain that I was hallucinating or dreaming. It's definitely made me think about whether ghosts genuinely exist 🤔

I was wide awake and saw the old lady in the downstairs flat who had died a few weeks before.

Billyhargrovesmullet · 30/09/2022 13:28

I’ve heard alot in the past, smelt smells with no explanation and seen figures out of the corner of my eyes but actually saw someone walk past my parents back door the other day. Enclosed garden with locked gate, went straight out to look and no one there.

FatherDougalsBlueJumper · 30/09/2022 14:03

I've told this one before, less a ghost story, more something I don't understand.

Came home from school, middle of June, 15:30 so not dark or gloomy in the slightest. You couldn't see our front door from the road, it was tucked away behind some Leylandi trees.

As I walked past the trees I saw my mum stood there, by the front door. It was early so I said "oh, you're home early"

She pointed at the trees behind me, so I turned round to look and said "what?" She didn't answer so I turned back round and she was gone.

Didn't think anything about it (bizarrely) until she actually got home from work an hour later, confirmed she hadn't been home earlier and I freaked out.

It would have made a much better story if a tree came down in a storm and crashed into the house blah blah, but nope, we moved away three years later and the new owner cut the trees down.

Still have no idea what that was about!

That is very strange!! Almost like a timeslip!

I've got loads but this is my best one.

Was waking home along a road that had very high stone walls on both sides of the road for a long distance I. E. 400 yards. Saw a little old fella coming towards me, walking a Yorkshire terrier. I gave him a slight nod to say, how do. He nodded back. After a couple of seconds I turned around and he simply wasn't there! But there was nowhere for him to go because of the high stone walls! He'd disappeared

Very bizarre

ConkerBonkers · 30/09/2022 15:47

I have felt the presence of a ghost before, and communicated with it. Another time a shadow in peripheral vision in a definitely haunted apartment. Another time, saw the angel of death a few weeks before someone died, another time saw a demon.

I have cats and they are not in the bedrooms at night but twice I’ve been in bed, duvet over me and it feels as if one is in the bedroom getting the duvet comfy with their paws like they do before settling down - that freaked me out

I had this happen around 30 year ago. But we didn’t have cats.
Clearly remember the feeling now.

My husband and I lost our eldest son J. .. He didn't come home from hospital. We lived at the time in a ten year old house that DH moved into as a newbuild.. We had ds2 and moved, selling our house to my sister... She let it to a single mum with a little boy.. The mum came downstairs one day and her little boy was talking to thin air next to his toybox... She asked who he was talking to and he said there was a little boy playing with him.... It really freaked her out until I told her about J... She said that comforted her.. ♥

@NoOnKnows but I know that I wasn't asleep when I saw her. I had been trying to get to sleep and was feeling pretty anxious, more in a state of fight or flight than relaxed.

You don’t know though, dreams can feel very real. It sounds to me like you were anxious, fell asleep, had a nasty dream, woke up. What’s more likely, that or a ghost? Anyway the alternative is you hallucinated.

Hempy · 30/09/2022 17:30

elderflower I'm so sorry you and your DH lost your ds. I hope you found some comfort in that story from your old home. 🌷

Chemenger · 30/09/2022 17:33

I haven’t personally but two of the least “woo” people I have ever known have told me detailed stories of seeing them. I have felt a cat jump on the bed and curl up next to me the night after she was put to sleep.

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 30/09/2022 17:43

I haven't seen a ghost, however, I have been around relatives when they are dying, and they have ALL said that they can see loved ones, who have already passed. Almost like they came to collect them.

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 30/09/2022 17:46

Oh, and I've had our dog press her wet nose on to mine, to wake me from a nightmare. The dog has passed away though!

We were discussing deceased MIL one day, less than favourably, and a canvas flew off the wall. I would not believe this, had I not been there.

I was once walking with a friend along a road that had a very pronounced dip in it. It was the autumn after we graduated in 2004 and we were going to an out of town furniture shop to order my friend a new mattress as he had just moved into a house share with a lumpy bed. We were skint and only recently out of uni so had no cars, we had been travelling by bus. We had got off a bus about half a mile previously and had been walking for about ten minutes, as the bus we had taken didn't go all the way to these out of town shops.

It was a normal enough stretch of road, wide enough to have two designated sides with painted lines down the middle. Neither side had a pavement; the side we were walking on had some houses, the other had fields right next to the road. It was quiet so even though we were walking in the road, we didn’t fear being run over. In fact I’m not even sure we had seen a vehicle besides the bus we had got off of in the whole time we had been walking. The houses on our side were detached and quite widely apart from one another, there was no one else around and, as I say, it was very quiet despite being the middle of a week day. It was late autumn and nothing was growing in the field on the other side of the road, it was seemingly recently ploughed. It was in London but in an outer borough adjoining an area of Essex countryside. We were walking away from the more citified bit in the London borough to get to an out of town shopping place on the Essex side.

We were just chatting, walking into the lowest point of the dip, when we saw a man in old fashioned clothes, riding an old fashioned bike coming down the hill on the other side of the road, into the dip. We were still chatting away and my friend commented on the bizarre style of dress the man on the bike was wearing; the bike was modern in shape but also clearly very old. His style of dress was a lot like thiss_, as was the bike. My friend made a comment about how hipsters had made it out of Hackney and finally come to Essex and I laughed when, suddenly, the man and his bike just... vanished. Into thin air.

Both my friend and I stopped, dead, and just stared at one another in disbelief. It's a cliche to say we were blinking in confusion and rubbing our eyes, but we virtually were. The man had just... gone. We ended up crossing the road to see if the man and his bike could have gone anywhere there out of sight, but there was nowhere to go.. it was just a flat field on that side of the road with no hedges or anything to mark it from the road and anyway, we literally had both seen the man evaporate!

I'm convinced we just crossed over the time 'streams' or whatever for a few seconds and that the man was less a ghost and more some kind of impression on time and space. Gave us the heeby-jeebies though and I've never travelled along that piece of road since without shivering slightly at the memory!

We made it to the big Ikea that we needed to get to, but opted to get a bus back that took us longer to get home on, just to avoid walking along that piece of road again! I often think of the old fashioned man on the old fashioned bike and wonder where he was really from.

I realise my description of the road is hard to imagine, so please enjoy this brilliant diagram I’ve made for you all Grin

You told that story really well. You should write!

Not me but my grandma saw my long dead grandad sat in a chair in the lounge the same night my uncle (their son) died. She thinks he had come to get him and came to tell her first

Yes, I've seen this first hand the day before the person passed away. They genuinely thought their other half was there. Was upsetting at the time, but after they passed it actually felt comforting.

Tilda77 · 30/09/2022 21:05

I can remember as a 5 year old being scared to open my eyes if I woke in the night. Each time I opened my eyes there would be a man in old fashioned metal body armour standing in my room. Sometimes in the corner. Sometimes I would open one eye to check and he'd be standing right beside my bed. I know I wasn't asleep. I can remember it like it was yesterday. I remember i would have conversations with myself in my head. Daring myself to look. Just through a squinted eye. It happened every time i woke at night. Luckily we only lived there 7 months . I was telling my mum this some years later and she said why didn't you tell me at the time! I have since researched the area where we lived at that time and it has a vast history and they've unearthed a lot of mainly pottery from the medieval and roman times. Maybe whoever was in my room wasn't impressed with the massive housing estate that was built there

anothermamaa · 01/10/2022 13:26

Shameless bump for more stories! I don't have one but love reading these, I was just about to try and start a spooky thread in prep for Halloween season. Keep em coming!

violetsflower · 01/10/2022 13:42

I've name changed for this as it's very outing, but I had to add it when I saw the thread.

We used to live in part of a converted mill. One night my daughter (around 5 years) woke screaming so I went into her. I asked what was wrong and she said 'The lady is here.' I asked where and she told me she was next to the bed, which was a bit unsettling to hear in the dark (I hadn't stopped to switch the light on). She slept elsewhere that night anyway and I dismissed it as a bad dream and didn't mention it again.

A few weeks later my daughter was playing with her doll house in her room and she suddenly said to me 'This is the lady's bedroom, you know.' I was a bit startled to say the least! I think she said she had seen her more than once and was able, for years afterwards, to describe what she looked like (an elderly lady in a nightgown) in great detail.

I think it could still be dismissed as a bad dream and a good imagination, I'm unsure, but I thought I'd share.

beachcomber70 · 01/10/2022 14:33

A lot of very strange things have happened to me, but not actually seen anything for sure....just shadows and felt a presence more than once...and other things have happened.
One that I think about is when I was visiting a cousin and we were talking about our recently deceased Grandmother who we were both extremely fond of. We talked for a while, when suddenly there was an almighty crash and my cousins kitchen ceiling fell in! We jumped a mile and both said 'that was Granma'. Why we both assumed the same thing I don't know. Cousin isn't woo at all.
Cousins bathroom had a historical leak over the years and she knew about it but it wasn't that serious. She was going out with a builder who would have told her if it was that bad.
I'm aware it sounds stupid but the coincidence of the ceiling crashing down at the exact time we were reminiscing seemed very odd to both of us.

Imissmoominmama · 01/10/2022 14:40

I posted on mn once about a cyclist I saw who just vanished into a hedge. There was no gap in the hedge. His clothes were workwear, brown, and old fashioned. His bike was an old, heavy one.

I was driving past on my way to work.

When I was at university about 20 years ago - I was in bed with my boyfriend if the time in halls and we were going to sleep snuggled up. There came the sound of a person breathing out, very loudly, as though someone else’s head was right next to ours, just a single “huuuuuuh” breath sound. We both froze, I started to say “what the fuck”, my boyfriend shushed me and we both lay silently listening for another few seconds until I got up and turned the light on. I wondered at the time if it was him or his mates somehow playing a trick in me but he swore not, and I can’t see how anyone could possibly have got the sound so close. I am not a woo person at all but we both definitely heard it together and I have never been able to explain it.

alwaystea · 01/10/2022 16:20

I lived in an old terrace house in my 20s and used to feel someone sit on the bed and then lay on it next to me at night whilst I was in it! Only fleeting though and then it was gone. I later went on to rent that house out to a tenant and when she moved out she said she thought the house was haunted. I'd obviously never mentioned it to her. That freaked me out. I read once that small children and young women were more susceptible to seeing ghosts but no idea if any truth to it. My sister's friend saw a motorcyclist race by and then come off his bike ahead of her, when she rushed ahead he had disappeared. She later found out there had been a bike accident leading to a death on that road. I want to be a non believer but......

alwaystea · 01/10/2022 16:27

I wonder if that's why we say rest in peace because of what the Buddhist tradition is? Maybe others experienced this in the past and wanted to tell the decreased to rest easy and not 'wander'. The experiences on here all seem friendly though if that's the right word...

IclimbedSnowdon · 01/10/2022 16:55

About 20 years ago in our former house I went up to bed and left DH downstairs washing tv. We had a venetian blind at the window that wasn't fully closed. I turned over to face the window and there was the dark silhouette of a figure standing at the side of the bed in front of the window. As I watched (just a few seconds) it's arms seemed to float up from the figure's sides, and it just...vanished.
I remember not wanting to go to bed alone after this, and when I did I'd leave my bedside lamp on and DH would turn it off when he came up. He says I was probably dreaming, but I'm sure I wasn't.
Never seen anything since.
