Haa anyone seen a ghost?

OK, another woo thread but I can't resist them so decided to post my experience of seeing a 'ghost '.

Years ago before I married, I stayed at DH's flat before I went on a business trip.

I couldn't sleep and was tossing and turning for a good few hours. I am pretty certain I was definitely wide awake as I was thinking about the press trip the next day and I was wondering how I was going to survive it if I'd not slept.

My DH was asleep on the sofa in the living room as he snores really loudly so I was in his room in his double bed. I remember turning over from facing the window to face the empty side of the bed. I then saw a woman who was actually sleeping under the duvet, eyes closed, as clear as I could see anything else in the room.

She was youngish, wearing what I can only describe as somd 1920s flapper headband, and was literally tucked in under the duvet.

I have thought about this many times but I am convinced that I was definitely not dreaming or half asleep. I actually sat up in bed and looked at her in total horror and fright. At the point where I wondered if I should prod her to see if she was real, a few minutes had gone by. I was literally so terrified that I had to hide under the duvet and then when I emerged after what seemed an age, she was gone.

I've never seen or experienced anything quire as scary since and I'm certain that I was hallucinating or dreaming. It's definitely made me think about whether ghosts genuinely exist 🤔

Not a ghost sighting but I was in a local Victorian era pub with my parents waiting for our lunch to be brought to the table. I had my back to the kitchen door, my dad was sat facing me. I felt a hand placed firmly on my shoulder and turned, smiling, to look at the barmaid who I assumed was about to put a plate in front of me.
No-one was there, nor anywhere nearby. I reached to my shoulder but the 'hand feeling' was gone. It left me feeling not exactly shaken but a bit uneasy.

That's what I think too. Time is not linear. Maybe we are just seeing a crossover or overlap in time. Could be past, could be future.

This is the theory that makes the most sense to me, overlap in time. Lots of stories about "time slips". I remember reading about a street in Liverpool where several people have reported a similar experience.

spiderlight · 26/09/2022 17:36

Yes. I've posted this before. My son (about 6 or 7 at the time) and I both saw a little boy of about three on the top deck of a bus, in broad daylight. He was sitting in front of us but on the opposite side of the aisle, upstairs, with what I assumed was his grandmother, who was reading her newspaper. He peeked round the seat several times and we smiled at each other and did a little peek-a-boo game. The the grandmother, who was on the window side of the seat, gathered her things, got up and left the bus on her own, at the stop after we'd got on. There was no way he could have got past me without me seeing and he was far too young to get down the steps of a moving bus on his own, and there was nowhere he could have gone anyway. I watched the woman walk away on her own, and when we got off at the next stop, which was the last one on the route, there was no sign of him getting off with anyone else. My DS saw exactly what I did - when the lady got off, he said 'where's her little boy?' and when I asked him about it afterwards he described him just as I'd seen him, even to the detail of his hoodie.

A couple of experiences, where ive seen.

When I was little about 7 in the 80s one late afternoon my parents took me to the park, we were the only ones in the park and a group on adults on the grass area. I had the park to myself for a while until a girl about my age suddenly turned up, dressed in dated clothes for the time, I'd say 60s/70s style anyway we talking and playing together, got on really well, we were running around and pole underneath the slide when she suddenly vanished. I thought she was with the group if adults on the grass area but she wasn't they saw her disappear too. My parents were just bewildered we would of been able to see her run off near the park if she had, my mum was worried because she was too young to be on her own but we couldn't no longer see her. Even more freaky the girl asked me if I had heard about the car crash that killed a family.

Second sighting in a pub in the late 90s, I was in the toilets I thought there was someone next to me, I could hear them trying to climb and peak over the top of the cubicle, very juvenile! I went out to wash my hands, their toilet flushed but no one was in the cubicle! The door was open no sign of anyone at all.
Walking down the stairs a man dressed in a green suit rushed past me, I remember thinking he didn't fit in with the trend at the time, a good few years later after this,I learnt the pub is haunted by a man in a green suit.

Lovegossip · 26/09/2022 18:42

Occasionally I will wake up and see a tall man in the bedroom doorway, never his face though, he's wearing all black, a top hat, a long coat and walking stick, it's only for a few seconds though

I told DH and he's seen something similar but then he seems to attract spirits wherever he goes

HilarityEnsues · 26/09/2022 18:50

I have hypnogogic or hypnopompic hallucinations which are night time ones, usually within the first hour of sleep, so you get them on falling asleep or waking up, I've seen a variety of figures/people, as well as shadows swooping down over the years, I don't believe they are ghosts, they don't interact, they are like still photographs and vanish within a few seconds, I do scream a lot though. I am fascinated by night time hallucinations- to the person saying their partner is ill, it is very common with severely ill people to have hallucinations, particular illnesses are known for it, not just dementia or ones like that. It's all much more common than people think, even just hearing a ring on the door when no-one is there.

PinkButtercups · 26/09/2022 18:51

Yes quite a few.

I was once walking with a friend along a road that had a very pronounced dip in it. It was the autumn after we graduated in 2004 and we were going to an out of town furniture shop to order my friend a new mattress as he had just moved into a house share with a lumpy bed. We were skint and only recently out of uni so had no cars, we had been travelling by bus. We had got off a bus about half a mile previously and had been walking for about ten minutes, as the bus we had taken didn't go all the way to these out of town shops.

It was a normal enough stretch of road, wide enough to have two designated sides with painted lines down the middle. Neither side had a pavement; the side we were walking on had some houses, the other had fields right next to the road. It was quiet so even though we were walking in the road, we didn’t fear being run over. In fact I’m not even sure we had seen a vehicle besides the bus we had got off of in the whole time we had been walking. The houses on our side were detached and quite widely apart from one another, there was no one else around and, as I say, it was very quiet despite being the middle of a week day. It was late autumn and nothing was growing in the field on the other side of the road, it was seemingly recently ploughed. It was in London but in an outer borough adjoining an area of Essex countryside. We were walking away from the more citified bit in the London borough to get to an out of town shopping place on the Essex side.

We were just chatting, walking into the lowest point of the dip, when we saw a man in old fashioned clothes, riding an old fashioned bike coming down the hill on the other side of the road, into the dip. We were still chatting away and my friend commented on the bizarre style of dress the man on the bike was wearing; the bike was modern in shape but also clearly very old. His style of dress was a lot like thiss_, as was the bike. My friend made a comment about how hipsters had made it out of Hackney and finally come to Essex and I laughed when, suddenly, the man and his bike just... vanished. Into thin air.

Both my friend and I stopped, dead, and just stared at one another in disbelief. It's a cliche to say we were blinking in confusion and rubbing our eyes, but we virtually were. The man had just... gone. We ended up crossing the road to see if the man and his bike could have gone anywhere there out of sight, but there was nowhere to go.. it was just a flat field on that side of the road with no hedges or anything to mark it from the road and anyway, we literally had both seen the man evaporate!

I'm convinced we just crossed over the time 'streams' or whatever for a few seconds and that the man was less a ghost and more some kind of impression on time and space. Gave us the heeby-jeebies though and I've never travelled along that piece of road since without shivering slightly at the memory!

We made it to the big Ikea that we needed to get to, but opted to get a bus back that took us longer to get home on, just to avoid walking along that piece of road again! I often think of the old fashioned man on the old fashioned bike and wonder where he was really from.

I realise my description of the road is hard to imagine, so please enjoy this brilliant diagram I’ve made for you all Grin

I just have to say that is the best diagram I've ever seen on Mumsnet by a country mile (with or without ghostly cyclist)@BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ

@paulmccartneysbagel And where has your theory of non-linear time come from? Because that is not how any Physicist would explain it!

It has come from my head and I am not a physicist. Sorry if I am talking out of my arse!

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 26/09/2022 20:23

Several over the years.
When I was a teen could hear a dog, sounded like it was old and trying to get up off the floor. My own dog was on my bed, growling, hackles up.
I also saw a dog behind a bar gate, wagging its tail at me. the gate was locked, the area inside was small and completely walled in with a roof. No dog there when I fetched the key and unlocked the gate to check.
Years later I was renting a flat in a very old ( like 600 years old) building. My cats kept staring up at a particular corner of the livingroom but wouldn’t go over to that side of the room at all.
About 2 years after DH died I was cutting the grass and out the corner of my eye I caught sight of him leaning against a tree. Just a glimpse, then gone 😔

Gilead · 26/09/2022 20:26

Never seen a ghost. Others have. I think as a PP said it's residual energy which we don't know much about.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 27/09/2022 10:20

re the time slips. i've worked in lots of different parts of mostly London through the years and Peter Ackroyd's book on London which touches on ley lines etc could draw comparisons with time slips.

ButterflyBitch · 27/09/2022 10:25

I worked in a care home when I was a teenager. I was stood in the doorway of one of the residents asking if she was ready to get up for the day when I saw an elderly woman in a black wool skirt and red top out the corner of my eye. I turned to ask if she needed help and there was no one there.
when I went and checked in the nearest rooms there was a lady dressed all in blue and a lady in yellow. No one else around. I don’t believe in ghosts but I definitely saw someone that day.

NimrodNimroy · 27/09/2022 10:37

I work in a very old building built in the 1850s. I was first in and was setting everything up. I went into the meeting room to collect the dishes from the previous day. I flicked the light on and a man was sitting at the head of the table wearing a long academic robe. I immediately said "oh im sorry I didn't know someone was in here" he turned to look at me then disappeared.

Second time I was pregnant and was waking a lot during the night for the loo. The first time I went I could smell something that reminded me of my grandfather who died 20+ years previously. In my dream Ike fogged I just dismissed it. I woke again a few hours later and the smell was there again but even stronger, like it completely surrounded me. Again I dismissed it and went back to bed. When I woke the next morning I mentioned it in the group chat and my mum asked me to go check on my nan. When I went to hers she'd had a fall during the night and had badly hurt her hip, and couldn't reach the phone. .

woolhouier · 27/09/2022 10:38

I've never seen a ghost in the traditional sense but I did have an odd experience.
I posted about it years ago on here just after it happened. I'm going to look it up actually. We couldn't come up with a rational explanation.

It was a night or two before Halloween (probably no relevance) and we had a heavy wooden bunk bed in the corner, against the wall of a large bedroom. It was fitted with bunk bed curtains/drapes around the bottom bunk. It was very heavy and took two people to drag it if it needed to be moved.

Anyway, one evening it started to lift up/tilt downwards to the side, on two legs, and each time it did the drapes/cut blew out to the side with the motion. It did this for what was possibly a minute (I can't recall) before I said to DC 'can you see that?' Obviously she could and we quickly left the room after being transfixed (processing?) watching.
Afterwards I checked and the only thing that could have lifted the bunk bed in that way would have been for someone (strong!) to have been pulling from the outside frame. Each time all feet reached the floor I don't think it thudded like it was dropped but was more controlled (though I'd have to check that with DC now).

Why do I read these late at night? WHY
Oh I agree. Best Mumsnet diagram by far.

I always say this; i don't believe in ghost but I've had two experiences. Once when i was 13 i was walking down a hall with some folded laundry the hall also opened up to a view of the living room. It was midday. I saw a small family in the living room. That was a new build.

The other occurance was in a 130 yr old home. This was a dream, i saw a small gathering around a hearth, the next day i tore down a fake wall and unconvered The Hearth.

what do you mean - small family? Fairies?

Whenever I see a post about ghosts it's always very interesting to see how many people's experiences occur either when they're trying to get to sleep, just woken up or it's dark

This thread is exactly the same

The mind does funny things to people

Yes, or vaguely-remembered things that happened when they were a small child. Or things they believe their pets ‘see’.

RLOU30 · 28/09/2022 22:07

Years ago my mum and dad (who is completely a non believer) passed a beautiful church in Kent on their way to our new caravan site. They decided they would wait to the following week and go visit with my Nan who likes churches. When they went back the following weeks they couldn’t see it. They parked up and what was left was a load of overgrown grass. Confused they asked a local where the church had gone and was told it hadn’t been there for years. I often wonder what would have happened if they went in the first time!!

SacredDeer · 29/09/2022 17:49

Had to NC so I'm not outed

I've had a lot of experiences over the years and it used to scare me silly.

There's been a few occasions where I've not been on my own neither so definitely not my imagination couple of my experiences below (too many to list, I used to be a non believer but I deffo believe now)

I was driving in a dark middle of nowhere country road when I was about 20 with my best friend at the time when suddenly I slammed on the brakes as there was someone in the road walking along, we had just rounded the corner so wasn't until nearing approach that the headlights illuminated the person. We got out and my mate was shouting asking what was she doing, you're gonna get killed but she literally vanished. İt was about 5 miles to the nearest houses. Bit freaky but both had saw it, we decided to drive off as bit spooky tbh.
A year later we are on the same road, but in a taxi. Driver turns the corner and this female figure (same clothes, same place) walking along. Driver says nothing and carries on driving as though he's not seen anything, my mates shouting to stop, slow down but she vanished. Taxi driver didn't see a thing but said others did over the years, apparently a young lady broke down many years ago on a dark, wet, wintry night and unfortunately must have got run over when she went for help as the car was abandoned and someone rang the police to say they thought they had hit a deer until he stopped and seen it was a lady but it was too late for an ambulance . Freaked us out no end. Never will go that way again.

Had a lot of strange goings on at old workplace. İt would be warm constantly where I worked but all of a sudden there used to be a massive drop in temperature and would make the hair on Ur neck stick up. İt was like you could feel breath on your neck. We never ever worked alone, always paired up, would even have the boss let us go to the toilets in pairs. The premises would have the alarm system triggered quite often, and due to the nature of the business, two senior workers and the manager would be on duty to turn up as they'd be alerted to which area of the building and if they arrived and looked untoward, the police would be alerted. İt had CCTV everywhere bar the toilets (cctv in corridor facing door where toilets were located) everytime they went there would be something broken/happened. They would hear crying from the office which was locked, when it was opened nobody was in there. The toilets would be checked and there'd be a smashed wall mirror. A fire extinguisher had been set off on numerous occasions and they found a fire hose unravelled countless times. After two glass doors spontaneously broke whilst they were resetting the alarms, The manager eventually found another job as he hated it, felt so uncomfortable and unsafe. I left not long after too, although I never seen any of the nightly goings on, there'd be mysterious wet patches appear on desks, odd noises and weird shit happen constantly. Each time anything happened the CCTV had skipped several minutes so never had anything recorded, they upgraded the entire system and the problem still remained. They had huge problems keeping staff at that workplace.
