Your fave unfeminist things

Hi all! So I found myself watching the movie Overboard yesterday (original with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell) and as much as I adored it as much as when I was a teenager I can't help but feel a tad guilty for enjoying such an 'unfeminist' film.

You can google for full context and plot but if you haven't seen it, it's essentially a movie about a man who takes advantage of the fact that a 'rich bitch' woman who previously treated him like dirt develops amnesia. So he convinces her that she's his wife, and mother to his 4 ill-behaved boys, and has her do all his housework, cooking, parenting etc They end up falling in love.

It just got me thinking that a chat about all our favourite unfeminist things could be a laugh. Doesnt necessarily have to be a movie. Just anything you enjoy that makes the feminist in you cringe!

Thoughts?

Epilating.

I wasn’t keen on the film but there are other equally awful films I love - Housesitter for one 😂

TeenDivided · 25/09/2022 16:08

DH taking the bins out.

I'm more than capable, and do it frequently, just not as frequently as DH.

Teenyliving · 25/09/2022 16:12

I always get the men to go off and stand in long lines for drinks. It’s totally sexist behavior by me. But I explain to them very clearly it’s pay back for all they’ve benefited from
the patriarchy. I’ve got to stop doing it because it just be unbelievably annoying. But I do kinda feel it is some payback.

and oh I looooooooved overboard - I understand the conflict.

but even I remember watching pretty women at high school in a school lesson and thinking hang on a feminist minute.

SallyWD · 25/09/2022 16:18

I like being responsible for running the house, shopping, cooking, organising stuff etc.
Don't get me wrong - I do get tired!! But I still choose to be the matriarch.

ImAvingOops · 25/09/2022 16:19

I loved Overboard too.
Mine is being a sahm - always gets tons of criticism but I don't care.
Also dyeing my hair and shaving my armpits

Megapint · 25/09/2022 16:23

My husband & son's go off to the driving range & pub on Sunday afternoon. I stay home to do a good clean of the house and make a roast. I
Love it, my favorite part of the week.

KiraKiraHikaru · 25/09/2022 16:27

Lots of things.

Man jobs around the house that refuse I to do eg, bins out, putting shelves up, any sort of DIY.

I like that he is genuinely terrified of my period and fills the fridge with chocolate, books me massages, treats me like a queen with hot water bottles etc even though my periods are generally fine and don’t really bother me.

I am very feminist usually apart from those things.

Pullyouthrough · 25/09/2022 16:30

The song ‘young girl’. I’ve convinced myself it’s sung from the point of view of a very principled 21 year old man who falls for a just turned 18 year old and can’t possibly be with someone who is only just an adult while he has been one for 5 years.

Alopeciabop · 25/09/2022 16:38

Never seen the film so I don’t know but I’d that plot overview actually “unfeminist”? Isn’t it just horrible to convince someone who has amnesia that you’re married to them?

mine are bins out, spiders out, dirty cleaning jobs yet still wanting him to cook, clean, work and be equal with the kids.

And actually my vague recollection (misty though it is) is that he doesn't touch her, saying they don't sleep together. It could have been very dark the other way.

Mine is period dramas. Now admittedly I usually like the 'feminist for their time' ones but still. It's lovely dresses and having to wait to be asked and tea and embroidery. Chances are I'd have been living in a sewer not at a ball but I love that crap.

And I do like a burly, stereotypically masculine man. DH is big, muscly, with a broken nose from rugby, shaved head all that nonsense. It's primal. Show me a well-groomed man in a This is What a Feminist Looks Like t-shirt and I shudder.

I'm a terrible feminist.

Don Draper.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 25/09/2022 16:57

Bit of a mix here really.

Blue jobs = spiders, all creepy crawlies actually, when cat was alive , he dispatched the offerings.
Bins, vacuuming, all heavy lifting, digging, light bulbs, putting up Christmas lights, meat carving, writing the few Christmas cards that we have to send. Sure there's more.

Pink jobs = cooking, untangling the Christmas lights prior to his efforts, moths, very occasional ironing , wrapping presents, sewing when needed.

All the rest is done by either or both.

Have you listened to the Guilty Feminist podcasts OP?

I’ve started having my hair highlighted because it makes me feel more feminine.

Reading bodice rippers by the metric ton.

Although I read an excellent one with a feminist-to-her-fingertips heroine the other day (Gilded Age by KJ Charles) so I'm all-comers smut really.

AYearOfCushions · 25/09/2022 17:36

Love a bit of gangsta rap about bitches and hoes.

Oh god yes. I KNOW Dre is an arse. I know I shouldn't. And I have internal conversations about the fact that I won't even say the N word when singing along but saying 'bitch' is fine somehow. Urg.

Oooh yes. Strong, manly men who look good in a tight t-shirt (Volodymyr Zelensky?!)

Also love Overboard 😉

The bins. I. Will. Not. Touch. Them.
DH does the bins, the washing up, and most dog walks. I cook and clean.

I’m quite a ‘girly’ girl with long blonde hair and I like fake tanning, wearing make-up, clothes etc.

eurochick · 25/09/2022 17:56
